Are we rating the players based on their performances in South American leagues or jus their name overall? Because if its the name lots of those player were not better than tons of others in South America when they played there.
I don't know if I did. In Brazil, the list of players in post #1 was actually rating according to performance in the Brazilian League. All of them have won awards and titles here. Only the attackers didn't have a great performance as compared to brazilians (except Tevez). But most of the players on my list at # 22 were cited only by what they did off the Brazilian League.
In my posts (#14 - 17) i named the players with the better impact (IMHO) and performances in the argentine league, just following the title The best foreign...... For example, i thought that Gomez Sanchez brothers had an irregular spell in Argentina. The same with another peruvian like Teobaldo Guzman (playing mostly in 2nd division). There's also good europeans (in overall career) who had an irregular seasons playing in Argentina, which i not mentioned them, like spaniards Iraragorri, Cilaurren, Emilin, Aedo, etc. (which were in the spanish WC roster)
I'm not questioning your choices, they are great. I just wanted to know if we are rating a player soley based on their performances in South America or are we also including them for all they did elsewhere, Either way I also think Santiago Silva desrves a mention.
Well, i guess you're talking that the OP wasn't so clear whether Best refers to: 1) Player's Best performance only in Arg/Bra league, or 2) Player's AT status in overall career. Just, for the course of the posts, i figured out is the 1) . But is a valid question.
Best = performance, how good/fundamental/idolized was the foreign player for a Brazilian or Argentinian team. But again, curiosities like some flops (Ex: I always thought that Reasco was really good for LDU but he was just forgettable/a deception for São Paulo) or really bad foreign players can be posted so we can discuss more.

Argentinean League Foreigners All-Stars XI GK CHILAVERT, José Luis (Paraguay & Vélez Sársfield) RB VILLAR, Sergio (Uruguay & San Lorenzo) CB BERMÚDEZ, Jorge (Colombia & Boca Juniors) CB MELÉNDEZ, Julio (Peru & Boca Juniors) LB PAVONI, Ricardo (Uruguay & Independiente) DM SERNA, Mauricio (Colombia & Boca Juniors) CM FLEITAS SOLICH, Manuel (Paraguay & Boca Juniors) AM FRANCESCOLI, Enzo (Uruguay & River Plate) FW GÓMEZ, Walter (Uruguay & River Plate) FW VARELA, Severino (Uruguay & Boca Juniors) CF ERICO, Arsenio (Paraguay & Independiente)
Yes mate. I think Julio Meléndez is probably the best foreigner defender ever of Boca Juniors, even considering Domingos da Guia because his shorter spell. I'd put Mario Yepes in the next spot alongside Orlando, Jorge Bermúdez and Iván Córdoba. I'd rank Severino Varela and Marcelo Salas in a similar level but in that formation I'd align just only one centre-forward and Arsenio Erico is the obvious choice.
Argentina in Brazil Mancuso Palmeiras Cobi Jones USA Vasco da Gama very short stay. Who was that Onze Caldas gk who was in Santos?
Some less known Argentinian idols in Brazil: Juan Raúl ECHEVARRIETA: Clubs: Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata (1932-38; 95 games, 45 goals), Vélez Sarsfield (1938, 2 games, 1 goal), SE Palmeiras (1939-42; 127 games, 114 goals), Santos FC (1942-43),Ypiranga-SP (1944). Titles: Campeonato Paulista 1940 and 1942 (São Paulo state championship) with Palmeiras. - Known as the "The Man of Seven Instruments" (O Homem dos 7 Instrumentos - Portuguese expression that makes reference to versatile people) because he couldplay in any position of the attack with efficiency. But he was mainly a CF or WG for Palmeiras. He is the attacker with the higher goal/game ratio (0,89) in Palmeiras history. He was also part of the best team from Gimnasia's history, the 1933'Express ("El Expreso"). Armando RENGANESCHI: Clubs: Fluminense (1941-44; 120 games), São Paulo FC (1944-48; 107 games, 1 goal) and Jabaquara. Titles: Campeonato Carioca 1941 (Rio de Janeiro state championship) with Fluminense and Campeonato Paulista 1945, 1946 and 1948 (São Paulo state championship) with São Paulo. - Idol for São Paulo FC, he was the typical Argentinian CB, classy and a fighter. He is always remembered because he played most of 1946's Paulistão final game with a bad injury and still made the winning goal (his only goal for SP) of the championship. Ramón RAFAGNELLI: Clubs: River Plate, Vasco da Gama (1943-1948), Bangú (1949-1953) and SE Palmeiras. Titles: Campeonato Carioca 1945 and 1947 (Rio de Janeiro state championship) and the 1948'South American Championship of Champions, all with Vasco da Gama. - Tough defender (CB), the kind of player that always went to win the dispute for the ball. Starter for one of the best teams of Vasco's history, the "Victory Express" (Expresso da Vitória).
From Argentina Chilavert - Villar, Bermúdez, Meléndez, Pavoni - Gómez, Serna, Paz - Alzamendi, Salas, Francescoli.
