In typical Hannover-fashion the Scorpions pissed away the 1st place and 1.000.000€ Champions League money away in the last 3 weekes. Amazing.

Yep. At least the Indians are on track. They haven't been beaten during those last 3 weeks. They should nget the promotion this year. is their stadium big enough for the 2nd League?

So it's playoff time in Germany and I watched two games in the last three days.
I will never understand why hockey isn't the most popular sport int eh world, it's such a beautiful game and a great spectator sport.

Friday my team won the first game of the best of seven series here at home and today we travelled to Wolfsburg for the first away game.

Sadly we lost in overtime but it was great game and experience nevertheless.
I really doubt there is an uglier city anywhere in Germany than Wolfsburg. At least they have something to be happy about today but they still have to live there.

It's also fascinating to see a town where about 96% of all cars are Volkswagen.

Hanging around in Wolfsburg feels like you just stepped into an Episode of Twilight Zone, or something. "This town can't be real... it looks so artificial... and... oh my god, I bet those people are zombies!!!!"

Nice to see a hockey thread here:)

I love hockey and follow the NHL. Love the Avalanche even though the are about as good as Cottbus this year.

I do not follow hockey in Germany but I love Christian Ehrhoff. I got his autograph after a game when he played with the Cleveland Barons in 2004.

The Avalanche woud still play for the German championship. ;)
And in NHL they will also come back one day, US sports runs in cycles,
    so heads up. :)

I sadly don´t follow NHL so much, i did at the end of the 90s/start of the century so I only know German long-time NHL players like Olaf Kölzig or Marco Sturm and from other countries legends from that time like Jaromir Jagr, Wayne Gretzky or Joe Sakic (at Colorados great time).

Congrats to Düsseldorf as well after winning the decisive 7th game with 5:0!

    Here's the DEL semi-final fixtures:

    Berlin vs Mannheim
    Hanover vs Düsseldorf

Btw: After being almost rescued in winter, the Nuremberg icehockey club Sinupret Icetigers seems to be history soon after the withdrawal of the main sponsor 'Sinupret Bionorica':

Although I haven't attended one single game after the name change from Nuremberg Icetigers to Sinupret Icetigers, I'm really sad right now (having experienced many great moments with the club between 1997 and 2006). :(

Not a hockey fan, but I just saw someone sporting a nice "Eishockey Essen" jacket walking down the street.

Why? What needs to be done?
Isn't it big enough. Imo it's pretty perfect for hockey or do they want a bigger capacity?

It's not like it was always sold out when they were playing in the best level a few years ago.

Oh how I wish the Scorpions would just fold. I'd love to go back to the Wedemark.
Even with 1500 fans it's much better than DEL hockey in the Arena.

I wish we'd still a club over here. Braunschweig may not have been a hockey hotbed, but we had a 2nd division in 1998 at least. The Eislöwen finally folded in 2007 (although "serious" hockey in Braunschweig ceased to exist in 2003 already, since then it was strictly amateur), the stadium was torn down in 2008, so there is no ice hockey left at all. I never went back in the day but these days it would have been a great alternative to football.

Hey, I already talked about this in this thread as I see now - but it was 2 1/2 years ago, so I guess that's still ok that I forgot ;). Consider it an update on the team finally folding then :D.

Berlin won the 4th play-offs match with a 4-2 at DEG
and got 3 wins the best of five series.

    So ...

... the polarbears are German hockey champion 2009. :)

I'd have prefered DEG over Dynamo. About time they win something again... and since Dynamo plays in that new Arena thing the only cool thing about them, the awesomely named Wellblechpalast stadium, is gone...

I thought the Eisstadion am Pferdeturm doesn't really fit 2nd BL regulations. I may be wrong about this, for the next step (DEL) it would be too small though. Keeping that in mind I'd probably prefer them to stay in the 2nd BL, Indians playing at TUi Arena would be just plain wrong.

And I agree about the Wedemark. The atmosphere there was much better.

Congrats on defending the title (although it's getting boring with all those Anschütz millions)!

    DEG - Berlin 2:4
    Berlin - DEG 5:1
    DEG - Berlin 3:1
    Berlin - DEG 3:2
