Colombia's team for the Copa. Probably the best team Colombia has had since 1994. Not that good, but this is a good colombia team on paper

Not really, the Copa America 01 team was better.

Uruguay will play a major role. The brazil squad lack midfield attacking options expect Lucas.

    Brazil's team.

Goalkeepers Victor (Gremio), Julio Cesar (Inter)

Defenders: Daniel Alves (Barcelona), Maicon (Inter), Andre Santos (Fenerbahce), Adriano (Barcelona), Lucio (Inter), Thiago Silva (Milan), David Luiz (Chelsea) Luisao (Benfica)

Midfielders: Lucas Leiva (Liverpool), Ramires (Chelsea), Sandro (Tottenham), Jadson (Shakhtar Donetsk), Elias (Atletico Madrid), Elano (Santos), Paulo Henrique Ganso (Santos), Lucas Silva (Sao Paulo)

Forwards: Robinho (Milan), Alexandre Pato (Milan), Fred (Fluminense), Neymar (Santos)

So you are allowed to take only 2 GK's? I think Mano Menezes did this so he can take Pato and Ganso, and see what happens.

so weird, the best part about a Brasil team is the GK and Defense.

Is Pato 100% I though he was injured.

For once, I think that our defense can handle these small forwards from Brasil. In the recent pass, big-physical-athletic forwards from Brasil (Ronaldo, Adriano, even Kaka) would destroy us. But these small guys? I feel good about that.

The problem is going to be that Alves and Maicon; expect Brasil to play with both at the same time. Neutralizing those guys and taking advantage of their offensive nature is going to be key.

Brazil did not take Hulk which is strange. Pato, will likely play because it was 6 weeks or so. Who knows if he will be at a 100%. Brazil have that traditional forward in Fred, who can make some noise. But Brazil is using speed not bulk this time around. They will use their speed against our super slow defenders. Our MF will have to be the anchor, Masch and Cambiasso(If fit) have to do a lot of work. Even Banega will need to go back at times.

On another note, I watched a fraction of the Uruguay-Netherlands today. Game ended 1-1 but they went to a PK shootout to play for some trophy(not sure, the coverage was in Dutch). Uruguay won the game on PK's, which makes me wonder if this will help them down the road. They had an attacking trio of Cavani-Forlan-Suarez and Suarez scored their goal. They will be handful as well.

Re: The All Purpose Other Teams Thread, Pt. II (R)

I am looking at how our journey can play out. If we win our, and Uruguay and Brazil do the same, we will not see neither them until the finals. However, if Uruguay finish 2nd in their group, we will see them in semis. It will be impossible to play Brazil unless they finished 3rd in their group and are one of the top 2 3rd place teams.

So lets say, we win our group, we play the top 3rd place team in one of the groups. I guess I will make a guess and say Mexico(U23 or 25 team). If we get passed that we get the winner of the runner up of our group(lets say Colombia) and the runner up up of group C(lets say Chile, even though they will be playing in Mendoza for their last 2 games). But this is assuming that Uruguay can win their group.

Well now they can't say they aren't bringing an A-squad because this is the best they can bring at this point. And don't give me any crap about Kaka who's dead as dead.

Well the COPA means more to you Argentines...you have not won ANYTHING (significant) in the last 18 years and Brasil will play without any major pressure (comparatively) on their shoulders. I am really looking forward to this tournament as the whole of South America seem to have brought their strongest (arguably) teams.

However, anyone that declares Kaka finished is not serious. He is the one absentee, in my opinion who Mano Menezes will regret leaving out if the team does not do well (him and Marcelo and to some extent Nilmar)......

I don't go along with the Brazil are under no pressure line, in fact that is complete nonsense. Brazil are always under pressure, they were being booed by their fans for drawing 0-0 with Holland in a friendly game.

You can't say it's their best squad, I mean where is Felip Melo, the trash talking Brazillian is my favourite player of all time and was the star of the last world cup. :D

On a sadder note Argentina's roads have claimed three more victims and also left Hugo Compagnaro seriously injured.

Re: The All Purpose Other Teams Thread, Pt. II (R)

unfortunately I think Brazil is better than Argentina in every aspect of the game. First of all their is the mental edge they hold over us. We can beat them in friendlies or olympics, but when its for important things like world cup qualifying and copa america brasil has owned us lately. Not to mention Menezes is a much more serious coach than Batista who is obsessed with copying Barcelona and nothing else. The line up is going to be

    ------------------Carrizo
    Zanetti----Miilito -----Burdisso----Rojo
    --------Cambiasso--Masche--Banega
    ------Di Maria-----Messi-----Lavezzi

that means no Higuain or Pastore in the line up. that team is a joke. sure it put together some decent passing against the USA but we couldn't score and that was the US, a crap team. Brazil has Julio Cesar, Maicon, Alvez, Lucio, Tiago Silva, Andre Santos, etc. in defense. Gaby Milito is just plain terrible. You can't really say anything else. He sucked playing scrub teams in the copa del rey, god knows what will happen when he faces Neymar, Robinho, Ganso, Pato, etc.

Our only hope is that the team struggles in the group stage, but I have fears that the team will waltz past the teams like Bolivia and Costa Rica and the idiot will think this formula is correct against all teams. Argentina can't play with 3 5's and we can't play without a 9. you can't expect lavezzi and di maria to give you goals. ojo that even paraguay will be a tough fight... they have a great defense (as they showed in world cup) and with all of them that have invaded our country they wil have so many fans too

Re: The All Purpose Other Teams Thread, Pt. II (R)

Glad to see the optimism Gaucho :D...On a serious note, I do not like that trio of Lavezzi,Messi,Di Maria. If and only if Batista has half a brain, he will put Aguero and Pipita in that starting lineup. Will we will it? I am not so sure, but one of those 2 needs to starts, and Lavezzi probably needs to take the bench. I watched a bit of the Brazil/Netherlands game and Afellay was a big headache towards the Brazilians defenders. He was really taking it to them at some parts of the game. Di Maria might be that player that can run right at the defenders and cause havoc. We have to give Messi space and we can not go up against Brazil with a trio of weak players up front. As you said we can get away with it against weak teams, ala US,Bolivia,Costa Rica which will give us a false sense of security. But Argentina is going to smash Bolivia and Costa Rica into pieces. Colombia might be tricky, but I still see a 2-1 or 3-1 win.

The MF, Banega will be a starter and Masche and Cambiasso will be there as well in the starting lineup. I think we got burned far too many times on the counter and Batista wants this stopped. Banega will be doing the distribution of the ball and holding down the fort. Masche and Cambiasso will be the anchors to the defense. Should put Pastore in the MF and drop Cambiasso? Let Banega and Masche take care of the MF? Should look ideal, but not sure if this is Batista's plan.

The defense, the sad sad defense we have. The days of Sorin and Ratón are gone. Why he continues to call G.Milito I just don't know. Zanetti is timeless but when will time hit midnight for Pupi? I think this is why Batista wants to anchor the MF to be solid. The likes of Neymar,Pato,Fred will cause them a ton of problems(So will Cavani,Suarez and Forlan). In about 10 days time, we will see what type of team Batista is going to put out in the starting lineup. It's against Albania which will be basically a beating like the game vs the Canadians(right before the WC).

The starting keeper will be Romero, and forward line and the central duo in the defense may be different, also Menezes may seem serious to us be he's still criticized and also has made some strange call ups, Hulk is missing for example, also remember that before the match in Qatar we hadn't defeated them in friendlies either(Remember the 3-0 in London...), now got to see how things go for both of us, haven't looked much at their squad in detail but I'm hearing comments on how this Brazil compared to recent ones lacks build(What do you guys think of that?).

Nothing significant? I would argue that winning two Olympic gold medals is significant. I would argue that our clubs winning Copa Libertadores and Copa Intercontinental is significant. But hey, if it's not significant to you, well... I guess you're welcome to your opinion.

But I do agree with the obvious, that winning Copa America would mean a lot to Argentina, and winning the WC in Brazil would mean even more.
