Let's start off with a fun story from Radley Balko.

A Pinellas County sheriff’s deputy knocked on Lee Ann Hutts’ door Tuesday night and her dog, Smoke, started barking incessantly.

Within moments, the deputy pulled out a gun and shot Smoke in the head.

    ...

Hutts, 32, and her neighbor Tina Morrow said deputies came to their mobile home park on 28th Street N investigating a burglary report. Unable to find the right home, a deputy went to Hutts’ door.

    So, let's recap:

You're at home, and the police knock on your door, because a deputy is lost. You've done absolutely nothing wrong. Seconds later, your dog is dead, shot in the head by the police.

    Then he leaves.

What would happen if you did the same thing?

By the way, notice the number in the URL. This isn't an isolated incident.

Regrettably it is by no means isolated... in Maryland a similar event occurred just a few months back... to a Mayor and his family and pets:

Mayor wants federal probe after SWAT raids house, kills dogs
    http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/08/07/mayor.warrant/
(CNN) -- A Maryland mayor is asking the federal government to investigate why SWAT team members burst into his home without knocking and shot his two dogs to death in an investigation into a drug smuggling scheme.

Law enforcement has much to answer for; War against Pets I guess! Sadly such stupidity from police is becoming more common.

Apparently, in 2000, the PG police were put under Department of Justice oversight concerning violent conduct. They have proudly announced the removal of that oversight.

This happened when they were being officially watched! Why didnt the Feds step in?

Good post, sad story. Obviously since she's Hispanic, she's surely an illegal immigrant and should be beaten! Oh, she's not? Oops.

As an aside, she was beaten for something I've never heard of, signing a traffic ticket. We don't do that in New Jersey.

    Disaster [maybe] avoided.

That's a badass woman. Too bad she's still in the hospital.

It would have been nice if he left his name. I wonder if anyone under his command ever did anything wrong, and what his response was.

Lock him up. For a long ********ing time.

Truck drivers can get their licenses suspended for driving without insurance. Lawyers can get their licenses suspended for giving improper advice to clients. Why? Because professionals are held to higher standards.

I don't give a rats ass if the girl was being mouthy. I wouldn't care if she murdered his mother. Police CAN NOT DO THAT. Nobody who reacts like that to a shoe should ever be allowed to carry a badge.

Honestly (as someone who has been locked up on occasion) I imagine that he told her to kick her shoes off, she kicked it in a way that he deemed inappropriate so he threatened her, then she said something, then it escalated.

But yeah. Throw away the key on that chump.

What would you do if you came home & she had murdered your mom?

"She called them 'fat pigs' and other obscenities"

    “The girl became lippy”

“There are two sides to every story, the video you saw does not tell the other side about what happened”

I love that. Raw video has a media bias.

I'm not a police officer, never could be a police officer, and anybody who would hire me as a police officer would be stupid because I have trouble controlling my anger.

Police officers absolutely must be held to a higher standard. Bashing a girls head into a wall, and punching her in the head while she is pinned on the ground...that is unacceptable.

Maybe next time she'll hand him the shoe or place it outside the cell door.
In my county, a few years ago, some kid spit in the face of a police officer, who responded by punching the kid in the face, breaking his nose. The officer was indicted for aggravated assault & official misconduct. A jury took about 15 minutes to acquit him.

At a legal clinic where I volunteer, I helped a guy who (depending on which story is to be believed) either looked similar to a criminal, or was guilty of a misdemeanor, so was beaten to within an inch of his life by police and will never work again. Nothing will come of it except for a disability case, but in a perfect world a pretty large civil suit and criminal convictions of the police officers would be in order. Even as a white male attorney, I have very little trust of the police in Indianapolis. I lived with a cop in NC, and I thought the bad apples there were far outnumbered by the good. I don't think that is the case here and in many places.

I wonder if he would get the same treatment if it was a father doing it to his son.

Are you seriously defending these asshole cops? Seriously??

I can promise you that if I had been on that jury and the cop's only defense for his actions was that the kid spit on him, there would have been no acquittal.
