Congrats! I presume you qualified through a satellite?

    What is the normal buy-in?

$215. I actually won 2 seats, so I got to pocket $215 for the 2nd one.

The tourney is going on right now, and we are down to 661 out of 4682 players. I have a below average stack, but I'm already in the money for $300! The next prize level is placing 600, which would net $400.

I have not had ANY pocket pairs higher than 99 though, so I'm due BIGTIME. :D

Oh well, just when I say I hadn't gotten any pocket pairs I raise with JJ - get pushed all in by the chip leader. I'm ahead of the range of hands he's be pushing with here so I call. He has AK and catches a King on the river. Yuck.

Anyway, finished 598 out of 4682. For the second straight time I get knocked out by an inferior hand - but that's poker!

AK isn't much behind JJ, but you lost a race as a slight favorite. That is indeed poker. Bummer. Better luck next time.

Congrats on another cash. I don't see how you can't call with JJ there, unless you are dead certain that your opponent would push with QQ+, and no one plays that tight. Tough luck, but next time those fishooks will hold up!

Geez, don't know why I never even thought about looking for a Hold 'Em thread.

I used to have a weekly game going with friends. Nothing serious. Just $20 tournaments, then $1/$2 cash games afterwards. I didn't start playing regularly till about November, which is when I was invited to play with these guys.

I definitely got a lot better, but I think I'm more of a luck player than skill. I think anyone that's pretty good would able to read me easily as I'm a wimp and rarely bluff. Ahh well. Still fun to play though, although it's been a while now.

    Re: Texas Hold 'Em

Was playing Omaha 8 yesterday. Went in with four low cards, including 2h-3h. Flop comes 5h-6h-x. I call. Turn brings a 4h and the straight flush, so both the turn and the river wind up being capped. Sure enough, one guy had A-2 for the nut low, and the other guy had 7h-8h for the higher straight flush.

Thankfully, I made it all back on the next hand, where I flopped kings full of nines.

That sucks! Even worse is that if there was a bad beat jackpot there, you wouldn't have won it because of the guy with the wheel...

    went to the casino

played a game of 1/3 blinds at 40 dollar minimum

got 40 bucks worth of chips (each chip was 1 dollar)

got shit cards all night, only two good hands i got where a-k suited. flopped 3 kings on the flop but 4 clubs appeared on the river so I folded to somebodys 20 dollar bet at the end

after playing conservative and getting no cards I finally got K-Q offsuit and it put it all in for my last 15 dollars

1 opponent called he had A-J and flopped two pair on the flop, i had a straight draw but the ten never came up

o well, im pretty sure I could have played a bit better but I wasnt getting any cards

So what's the consensus from this group on the new online gambling legislation? Cash in your online accounts? Wait until someone threatens to prosecute end users?
The feds hauled in the CEO of Betonsports.com when he was changing planes in Texas and are charging him with tax evasion.

    Re: Texas Hold 'Em

I think we discussed this a few pages back, but personally I would recommend Harrington on Hold 'Em (Vol I if you're only interested in no limit cash games, Vols I & II if you're interested in tournaments). I also recommend Small Stakes Hold 'Em, which deals with limit hold 'em, but is tremendous at teaching you how to read the texture of a flop in nlh as well.

Also, another poster on here suggested the two plus two forums, which I heartily second. A word of advice on 2 + 2, though: until you really know your game, stay in the beginner's forums. They're without a doubt the best place to improve your game on the net, but they can be a pretty rowdy, world rivalries-type crowd.

    Re: Texas Hold 'Em

It sucks that the house passed the legislation, but I'm pretty sure (though not 100%) that the Senate is not going to take the legislation up in the next two weeks, which is when the session ends. So I think we're safe for this year. Depending on how the fall elections go, the composition of the house could be very different, so after the recess it is anyone's guess.

Carruthers, the BetOnSports guy, was hauled in for, among other things, taking sports bets over U.S. phone lines, which has been illegal since something like 1961. There is no such law for internet poker (yet, which is what the recent legislation was trying to change). Also, looking at the counts he faces, I think it is possible that he was involved in stuff (money laundering, racketeering) a little more heavy duty than sports betting.

Having said that, I think any legislation banning U.S. phone lines for gambling purposes, while entirely within the rights of Congress as enumerated by the Constitution, is stupid and I'm opposed to it. I'm not too happy that the House passed the legislation, even though it probably isn't going anywhere in the Senate this year.

If some adult wants to gamble on the internet, why stop him? It's his/her business. The state shouldn't interfere with that.

I loved Hellmuth's book. Of course, when I bought it, I didn't know anything other than what Norman Chad had told me on TV. It was an excellent introduction to elementary strategy and play.
