Surprised to see you at all, actually got on that table accidentally (usually play .50/1) but actually did pretty well there ($8 in 25 minutes at .25/.50 is pretty good). Of course it seemed like whenever you were in the BB I always got good cards and raised under the gun, hope you didn't think I was just bustin your nuts!

Not at all. I like being raised out of the BB by the UTG, actually. Helps me maintain a little bit of discipline. When it's someone in late position or the button, I have a tendency to think someone's trying to steal and I'll play it. Besides, I raised you a few times, too, as I recall...

    Re: Texas Hold 'Em

Stopped playing 4 months ago due to a bad beat that I don't think I'll fully recover from. Three handed, in a tournament that first place would've taken 1,500 dollars. I'm small, and look at pocket sixes. Dealer raises, and I just call. Big blind doesn't even bother. Flop comes out King 6 4 rainbow. ********ing A, nice set off the flop, figure if he hit anything it wouldve been his king with a marginal hand like a King 10, which is pretty good 3 handed. So I hear "I'm all in". I call, because I'm thinking at this point he has AK. Wrong. He's got A 4. I got this in the bag, taking one guy out and having a nice chip lead going into heads up, which used to be my specialty. Turn hits, 4. Doesn't help him at all, and 6s full of 4s is what I have now. Blank on the river right? Right? The last 4 in the deck falls. The guy wasn't even happy to win. He just looked at me with a "I'm sorry that just happened" kind of face. I felt awful after that, and haven't played since.

A similar beat happened on the WPT episode last night (I think it was Joe Cassidy that did it to David Williams), if it will make you feel better. A-Q against pocket fives or sixes. The set comes on the flop, but so does a queen, and he catches runner-runner queens to make quads.

But still, you got in all your money with the best hand, which is what you're supposed to do. Just remember that, in the long run, decisions like that pay off.

Ok, that answer is NO! I've dropped down to 2.7 BB/100. After reading a lot on pocket5s and twoplustwo, I realized that I was winning at an unrealistic clip.

While some of you were off la-dee-dah-ing in Columbus a few weeks ago, I was in Vegas. Played the midnight tournament Saturday night at the Plaza. $50 buy-in w/$10 add-on, and a $50 re-buy in the first hour. I had played it when I was there in January, and there were plenty of fish. Lots of players calling pre-flop raises with K-6 or Q-2 and stuff like that. Simple tight-aggressive play kept me in even though I got only one playable hand in the second hour (A-K, which I had to split with someone).

Only needed one suckout, when we were at the Final Table and I was shortstacked with the blinds coming up. in two hands Moved all-in (1200 with the blinds at 500/1000) with K-9 and got several callers. Flop came up Q-10-7. Guy to my right bets and everyone folds. He turns over pocket sevens, but I hit the jack on the turn to hit the straight. Ended up at 3:45 AM in fourth place, good enough for $230.

This means that, in the span of less than 12 hours, I saw the US beat Mexico and won $230 playing poker. Not a bad day!

So, if you're ever Downtown late at night and looking for a fairly easy game for not a lot of money, try the Plaza.

I can't wait to get back to Vegas, but I have to finish 'Caro's Book of Tells' first. :D

I'm also reading Barry Greenstein's 'Ace on the River' right now, fascinating book and fascinating man!

I'm in the middle of a Razz tournament right now, having never played it before except for a couple of HORSE tournaments I've played. I'm doing well, currently in 22nd place with 47 remaining, having started with 286. I think it's because I'm a horrible stud player and razz is completely counter-intuitive to stud.

    Re: Texas Hold 'Em

Somebody asked earlier why anyone would want to play on PartyPoker. Well, sitting down at the 10/20 tables I just won $576 in 18 minutes - mostly from two morons.

    9/16/2005 01:50:00 9/16/2005 02:08:27 PTY Table 10723 (6 max) $10/$20 (6 max) 5 18 576 30 96 96 36.6667 141.1333 5.4333 38.0368 N/A

This is actually the first time I've ever played 10/20. I just sat tight, tried to isolate the two really bad players when I had hands - and kept raising.

The amount of bad players on PartyPoker is astounding.

Finished 37th in this tournament, and went straight into a $5.50 Omaha Hi/Lo tournament with 203 other players, including Erik Seidel. Busted out in 3rd place for $127.50.

Seidel finished in 48th or so.

I really want to read that Greenstein book. I'm a huge admirer of his.

Great job Lanky! Someday I'll learn other games besides Hold 'Em - but I have plenty more to learn about Hold 'Em first!

What was Eric Seidel doing playing in a 5.50 buy in though???

    Re: Texas Hold 'Em

He'll do a handful of cheap tournaments while playing a high-stakes ring game. He also played the razz tournament I was in, which had a $1 buy-in (I finished ahead of him there, too). He wasn't at any of my tables, though. At the same time, Phil Gordon was playing a $100 tournament.

We've also been in a few SNGs together, including a $10 stud SNG that ended with the two of us heads-up. With the bets at 400/800, I had him down to 753 chips (out of 12,000), and he managed to comeback and beat me, but not before I check-raised him on a bluff. I had never done that before, so I figured it would be good to try it out on a guy with 6 WSOP bracelets (at the time). Real nice guy, with good taste in music.

One of the great things about playing the tournaments of games other than Hold 'Em is that you get a lot of people who are using them as cheap ways of learning them, so there are plenty of fish. In Omaha, for example, a lot of people will play nearly every hand because they read somewhere that virtually no hand dominates another like in Hold 'Em. But that doesn't mean that there aren't plenty of hands that you should never play.

So I won $200 in a tourney and thought I'd sit down at 20/40 limit with it and play super tight. So this is MY VERY FIRST HAND. What a buzzkill! One of those hands you are just destined to go broke on. I got such a woody when I saw that 6 on the flop.

What a bummer. You done nothing wrong though.

Is Party Poker the only site that tells you what losing players mucked? This is a big deal in working out who the fish are.

Full Tilt allows you to see hands mucked at showdown, too.

Tough break on the hand. No way you could have put him on JJ when he only called from UTG pre-flop. That's likely to backfire on him more often than not, especially six-handed.

That said, if you're going to play "super tight," you might want to re-think playing small-to-medium pocket pairs in the BB, especially when the SB raises and there's another player. After the flop, you were fine - there was just nothing you could do about that. But remember that you're only a 22-1 shot to make your set, which is all you can hope to achieve.

ParadisePoker does this in the hand history messages.

At casinos the winning hand can ask to see hands before they are mucked at the showdown, it's just not considered good poker ettiquette.
