My favorite pro-democracy demonstration that's been done in Hong Kong recently was last year (I believe) when they nominated a dog to run against Tung Chee Hwa to protest the farcical nature of the elections.

I urge the Hong Kong people to look in the mirror and remind themselves they are Chinese, the days of "no dogs or chinese" are over, the imperialists have left, welcome back to the motherland. Soon our comrades from across the strait will be joining our journey down the socialist path. Foreign powers attempting to break apart China will be liquidated.

My guess is that China likes to kidnap/jail dissidents when there's international attention on China to flex its muscles to the world. They're not trying to achieve anything practical by cramping down on dissidents, but rather, they're like a petulant teenager rebelling against their parents - they're saying "Mom, the more you nag me about human rights, the more repressive I get! Bwaah!"
