Gomez will lose all his confidence now and become the next Torres.

If Uli is beeing asked about the topic he´s free to answer it. I see Mario Gomez as a person who can deal with criticism very well, as seen under Van Gaal.

Anyways, Hoeneß is right about what he said. Gomez is already good, but not very good. There´s still plenty to improve. Nevertheless, he´s a Top 5 striker IMO but he could possibly become the very best with the right improvement.

What's right is Mario Gomez is a good striker but could be a great striker

Not a single goal against another top 5 team in the Bundesliga - Dortmund, Schalke, Gladbach, Leverkusen. The lowest number of assists among the top 14 goalscorers. The problem is when he doesn't score we're playing with 10 men because he doesn't add anything else to the team apart form his goals. And that's why he's the only player who can score 40-50 goals a season and still get this type of treatment and is often made the scapegoat.

Why are we playing with 10 men? Because the other teams (Top Teams) have figured out how to limit the 2 wingers and not enough comes out of our attacking midfield. How many goals does the rest of the team have against those opponents (not scored from a PK)? Not too many ...

Nobody scored against BMG or BVB or the second game against Bayer. So he did not score in 2 games he could have scored since he did not play in one of the Schalke games. Sorry, but this is a stupid discussion ...

The point was that he doesnt score in big games. Do games vs Holland, Portugal, Napoli, Man City count as big games? Cos I remember Gomez scoring all our goals in games vs these teams

Or are Portugal, Napoli, City, Holland not big enough?

Holland were absolute crap defensively so they dont count.
    Portugal count.
City .... well they were kinda crap in Europe last 2 seasons.
Napoli are poor defensively but good going forward so they dont count ;)

Against Real Madrid in the semis, Gomez missed a lot of great chances to score and he usually scores those.
Against Chelsea in the final, he had 2 great chances maybe 3 and missed them.

LOL! He will never catch a real break, no matter how many 30+ goal seasons he whips out.

Must agree with Hendrik though, as Gomez's greatest limitation is that he doesn't provide much to the side if he is not scoring goals. He is by no means a creator.

I think his biggest problem is that he needs to work for the team vs weak opposition. He worked his nuts off vs Madrid and Chelsea (even though his finishing was poor) but teams like FCK he is a bit too lazy and just waits at the top of the line. Perhaps that's also due to lack of rotation, though I hope he works on this.

For me the biggest problem isn't Gomez, it's when Gomez can't score, the rest of the team can't step up and do the job in important matches like the CL final and semi-final. Gomez played great overall but his finishing was poor and that's his main job, so he didn't do as much as he should have. Robben missed the sitter of the season because he was afraid he would get hurt by Casillas so he didn't jump a little higher on Alaba's cross for example...

Anyways picking him of all players is idiotic unless it's Uli's way of "helping him improve" or some sorts...

In Bayern games vs top opposition, You always see Gomez playing from our defence to the attack and whenever we use Kroos, Gomez has to deal with 2 CB's

In defensive corners aside our 2 CB's Gomez is the only other person that helps defensively . Everyone makes it seem like Gomez just stand upfront doing nothing while in actual fact he contributes more to our defence than most of our attacker. This clip vs Napoli and see where Gomez was during the Napoli attack, thats quite deep for a man reputed to sit just in th opposition half waiting for balls

I have to agree, Gomez is one of the most selfless strikers around.
How many times do you see him busting ass trying to help bayern regain possession?
Sometimes he runs back and helps so much you wonder if he's a DM or sweeper :p

What is kroos doing during this time?

It's the clubs fault. They know what type of a striker he is and they insist on centering the team around him. Can't have it both ways. He is what he is. He's not going to change over night.

Man City and Napoli in the freaking group stages of the CL are NOT big games!!!!!

Holland and Portugal in the Group were definitely NOT big games either!!!!

The Italy Semifinal and the Chelsea Final,Now those were BIG GAMES!!!

Like Hendrik said Gomez rakes up the goals by the bucketloads against the Hertha's,Freiburg's and the Basle's of this World which makes his numbers look fabulous, but against the really top teams he's found wanting in technique and mentality.

The last post is a perfect example of altering definitions in order to suit one's argument. Funny thing is that this retrospective declassification and reclassification of games to big games and/or small games is a moot point anyway, since none of these games happens isolated and and independent of each other. For instance CL final vs Chelsea might never even happen if Bayern were to lose vs Man City. But then again this is obviously the kind of bullsh*tting we see to often here

Gomez scored vs every team he played in the CL in the last 2 seasons except vs Chelsea.

For clarity he played 12 teams in the last 2 CL season and he failed to score against 1.

Man City won the EPL he scored, Madrid won the La Liga he scored.

So Portugal and Holland because they were in group stage not big games, But Greece in knockout is a big game. Without those wins vs City and Napoli, maybe we would never get to play the finals to start with.

This is a chicken or egg discussion. Özil was a shadow of his usual self during the Euro. Müller probably played his best football for us when paired with Olic. There doesn't come enough out of our attacking midfield because you can't pass to the striker, he's not involved in the buildup of plays. This makes us predictable and easier to defend.
In other words, we are too reliant on him scoring against Dortmund and Co. This is not a stupid discussion at all when the only argument in favor of him is his scoring rate and if we center the team around then he has to deliver in those games.

I think he has regressed in the past year. He was on a good way to become a much better all-round striker, was more involved until Heynckes took over. He did the same with Kießling as he apparently likes his strikers to stay uptop close to the opposing centerbacks.

Then it's more of a coaching issue than player issue. Different philosophy. I think you just negated your own theory. A coach to a large degree decides how a player gets used in the game ;)
