I wouldn't trade Lahm for any other fullback in the world..

Most famous and sometimes overrated fullbacks often establish a reputation as skilled attacking players who are efficient in defense. (Case in point Alves&Maicon: essentially deep lying wingers).

Lahm has established a reputation as a very skilled defending player, who for swaths of his career has the attacking class of the aforementioned group of players.

This IMO is the (rightful) reason he is often included in the list of worlds greatest fullbacks.

IMO Lahm is one of the top 3 full backs I have seen in the last 10yrs who was balanced both defensively and offensively . Most of the other rated full backs (esp Brazilian) are just excellent offensively and average defensively and very few can play both LB and RB without missing a beat like Lahm does (the only other person like that was Zambrotta)

Lol, no effin way. You need to look more broadly here, Ashley Cole is an absolute ********ing beast when it comes to that, and he contributes more than Lahm offensively. Then again, he's probably the best at the moment.

Yeah, I've often thought the same thing. He shows a lot more verve going forward from the left from where he can caught into the middle flat-footing defenders. He's scored some fabulous goals over the years for both Bayern and Germany like this. On the right, he lacks that same unpredictability as you say, but he looks stronger defensively.

Andreas Brehme might be the gold-standard for that position.

Dude, you're nuts. Baines and Cole are 2 excellent fullbacks no matter how you phrase it. Also Debuchy, who just signed for Newcastle, is actually a tremendous right back who for some reason, only got signed now. You're also missing out Coentrao, who is a beast both on the offensive and defensive (not Marcelo who is a disaster). Too much fanboyism dude.

tbh, I found him very very impressive in WC2010 and Euro 2012 - full of energy and balanced defensively and offensively. He is probably similar to Pepe - inconsistent but when on form and concentrated his is definitely amongst the very best currently.

speaking of Lahm, how would u experienced bayern fans compare him with wily sagnol?

what's the point of giving him another year he will be 5th CB and will never play better give him a job at the club.

Maybe give him a contract as a 3rd striker if Pizarro leaves :)

Cole is comparable to Lahm but Baines cant even match Stuttgarts Lahm never mind the Bayern one.
Coentrao not consistent looked suspect in Madrid Wasnt it him that Lahm skinned for the win in Munich?

Everton and Madrid would trade both Baines and Coentrao for Lahm in the opportunity comes.

Like I said with baines going forward doesnt make a FB.

Every tournament Lahm has attended since 2006, he made team of the tournament

Well, he did ok in the WC, not that great in the Euro and total crap for Madrid, where he pays the majority of the games ...

I think Lahm is better overall, as he's defending is better than Willy's, but Sagnol was awesome in offence, and his crosses where perfect, and you can't say that about Philipp

I think a big part of why Lahm looked better on the left is because he was playing behind Ribery and Franck is just better at playing off of Philipp than either Muller or Robben are, not to mention that Schweini tends to get involved over there more as well. Lahm doesn't have the same opportunity to exchange quick triangles and draw people off on the right. He's too busy covering for the lackluster defending ahead of himself or trying not to trip over his winger.

I think Lahm is exceptional offensively if, as Matakos said, he's not too timid. He's very skilled on the ball but I think he's a bit too shy to risk holes at the back. Anyways, Alaba and Ribery is the best wing tandem in Europe and I wouldn't have anyone else in David's position even if Alaba is not 'world class'.

Nothing about the test match today? You could have found an Al Jazeera stream. The voices were better than listening to Reif or Tut at Sky. The test match against Schalke probably will be on Sport1 or several streams.

Link to the highlights on youtube:

    First half Neuer-Lahm-Boateng-Dante-Martinez-Schweinsteiger-Müller-Kroos-Ribery-Mandzukic

Second half Neuer-Rafinha-van Buyten-Wein-Contento-Tymo-Can-Robben-Shaqiri-Höjbjerg-Pizarro (last 10 minutes Weihrauch for Höjbjerg)

The new Bayern captain. You did not know him? After the match he was interviewed by an Al Jazeera guy and this was always calling him captain. Somehow in the way: What do you think about it, captain? :D
