It's highly unlikely that any song that is ever chosen will please everyone in the stadium. I probably have a better chance of making the national team at 44 than everyone singing the same song at the same time. If RMH doesn't stick, then we try something else, but someone has to choose or nothing will ever happen. Just as it has gone year after year after year. RMH seems to be the answer until it fails to be. If you don't like it, don't sing it; I certainly don't sing everything that starts up.
The FO says they aren't going to move forward with this till it seems that the fans are on the same page and motivated to make this happen. They want to see this come from the fans. They don't see the need to do a more public poll to help us choose one because they can see how split the vote is, how hit or miss RMH might turn out to be. So, how can we do this from the ground up?
That's fair...then let's just run with Rocky Mountain High for a while and see how it works. We just need to pick out the part of the song we want to sing (anything longer than 15-30 seconds is overkill I think), print those lyrics out and pass them around the supporters groups until people know them. As far as when we sing it, I see RMH as more of a song we sing after we score a goal, and start it up right after the other team restarts play from the center circle. But if anyone has other ideas, do share. We could pass flyers out, with the lyrics on them, to random fans too as they come through the gates, but I think at first that might be more effort than it's worth. I'd personally say hold off on that till we get it to stick within the supporters groups.
As for picking out the lyrics we want, here's the full poem: He was born in the summer of his 27th year Comin' home to a place he'd never been before He left yesterday behind him You might say he was born again You might say he found a key for every door When he first came to the mountains his life was far away On the road and hangin' by a song But the string's already broken and he doesn't really care It keeps changin' fast, and it don't last for long But the Colorado Rocky Mountain high I've seen it rainin' fire in the sky The shadow from the starlight is softer than a lullabye Rocky Mountain high He climbed cathedral mountains, he saw silver clouds below He saw everything as far as you can see And they say that he got crazy once and he tried to touch the sun And he lost a friend but kept his memory Now he walks in quiet solitude the forests and the streams Seeking grace in every step he takes His sight has turned inside himself to try and understand The serenity of a clear blue mountain lake And the Colorado Rocky Mountain high I've seen it rainin' fire in the sky You can talk to God and listen to the casual reply Rocky Mountain high Now his life is full of wonder But his heart still knows some fear Of a simple thing he cannot comprehend Why they try to tear the mountains down To bring in a couple more More people, more scars upon the land And the Colorado Rocky Mountain high I've seen it rainin' fire in the sky I know he'd be a poorer man if he never saw an eagle fly Rocky Mountain high It's a Colorado Rocky Mountain high I've seen it rain' fire in the sky Friends around the campfire and everybody's high Rocky Mountain high
I'd go for this Goal-scoring has nothing to do with "softer than a lullaby." We don't want to open a can of worms by saying the word "God." The third one, about the eagle flying, could be a good one, except it's not obvious by looking at the lyrics how the syllables should go. That's my 2 cents.
Um...wasn't the idea of havening a song so we could actually sing the whole song? I mean, if are just picking a verse, we might as well just stick to chants.
I wouldn't mind extending it to two stanzas, but I think the danger of going beyond that is no one's going to remember all of the lyrics. Even with You'll Never Walk Alone, I think 'Pool only sings the last two verses (of a three verse song). Just look at the lyrics to RMH - would you want to remember all of those? Besides, the chants we have are usually one to two lines repeated over and over again. I think if we just repeated two stanzas it'll work better and it'll be saying enough to make it anthemic.
For reference, I'll add this here again: Rocky Mountain High: John Denver http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWU8XWksg_0 The eagle part is at about the 3:00 mark, and I actually like that part better, plus the stanza before it, mostly because it gets rid of most of the stoner connotations
I think so...but at least it looks like we have 4 clear favorites from the polling; Rocky Mountain High, Always look on the Bright Side of Life, One Step Beyond, and Lean on Me. Maybe we can shelve this for a while and then re-vote on those top four later.
Whatever works - but if we run another poll, we're only counting registered voters this time. Lean on Me and One Step Beyond were helped out a little too much by anonymous votes/possible cheating last time.
Ringshot passed out lyric sheets at the B&B game and I'd say a good dozen or so of us gave "Rocky Mountain High" a try right after kickoff. The rendition was so terrible that Jorge el Mapache feigned a slow and painful death right in front of us. I say in a couple more months it will be a going proposition. Maybe.
Ohh, that's what that noise was I was too far away from you guys to understand it, plus there weren't enough people there singing to understand it. If we could get the whole group (or most of it) singing I think it'd be a bit more effective.
Can i add one more? If Glory Glory Colorado is up there, we might as well throw in I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-a69_Hm3gI&feature=related Listen to the whole thing. Its not a hard song, most people know the song. ( considering we have a load of iron supporters. ) and its not negitave. It will pump up our Rapids.
Thank You, I have wanted this song to be ours even though it is those damn Hammers fans song. I think it is such an uplifting song, and adds emotion. Plus people already now the tone and some lyrics. I vote for this one, and we should try it this Sat. Im forever blowing bubbles, Pretty bubbles in the air, They fly so high, Nearly reach the sky, And like my dreams, They fade and die, Fortunes always hiding, I looked everywhere, I'm forever blowing bubbles, Pretty bubbles in the air
FOREVER BLOWING BUBBLES. This is already done. Yes I am West Ham. ...but it works for us very very well. And it is ok to use it. Many others do as well. Nothing at all wrong with doing it. A true classic and 'organic' lil song. No need for bubbles in a poll because it is and will be done. No words needed on a jumbo-tron or anything..... Like chants...alot of classics...real simple that are done all the time by everyone. Just a tweek or two here and there to fit the team and occasion. REAL easy folks. I again will have a little list of 'em on Sat. Not really to be used like a choir book at church or anything...... ...just take 'em home with you, read 'em over and if you hear any started...join in (or not) no big thing. No "poll" or "votes" needed......just start a chant or join in on one and voila' Cheers
So here is a few versions of Forever Blowing Bubbles.... I would hope everyone would join us in sec. 114 when we sing it loud....
Well do we have a definite time on RMH? Cause if anything we should do this possibly after we score, or when the kickoff is about to happen... Thoughts???
Just let things flow people...for crying out loud. No need to orchestrate everything. That said though.....what the feeling FBB is about,it's good just after the start of the game and towards the very end if we happen to be loosing. That and Old can of Burr.....at the 89th minute was it? Browns goodie of a chant.
It's not orchestration, it's more that when one group's sitting in one corner of the stadium and starts chanting, it's hard for the other groups to tell what they're singing till they're about halfway through it. Especially for the first time the chant's done and frankly most people won't know the lyrics/rhythm yet. After the chant's been done a few times and the groups recognize it, I think it'll come about more organically. But when just starting out, to make sure that everyone catches on and so that it's more than just 50 people singing, why not pick a certain time to sing? So, why not sing FBB after the start of the game or the half, and sing RMH right after we score a goal? At least for the first few games, it'll help everyone get on the same page.
No Bad Mr Jimmyco.....no such thing. Some set times of course for some chants/songs like Forever Blowing Bubbles,Old Can of Burr etc.... (Rocky Mtn High will take some convincing...good luck with it though) But EVERY chant doesn't need to be timed..... It wouldn't work. There are dozens of em' ..plus some just grow from the raw moment. Even when in was just C-firm...people all around that were starting several at once...as were people not even in C-Firm. Until everyone is familiar with alot of chants and we have a caller with a mega- phone then it is what it is...And nothing at all is wrong with that. My point was (and is) is that it shouldn't be forced too hard to time everything all of the time. NCC will have some chants listed out for Sat. And we are looking to assign a person to be a chant caller. But it will take a little time. cheers
When the players are coming out of the tunnel maybe, but they usually have music going... other than that, after goals, start of halves, and pretty much whenever, like a normal chant/song
