Once again, it's Tarantino. I'm sure Mandingo is more a homage to the movie Mandingo (which I haven't seen) than historical times.

I dunno. Here's Tarantino's quote from an interview....

Miami Herald interview said:

Q: The movie is akin to ‘Inglourious Basterds’ in that it’s a kind of historical fantasy, only rooted in more reality. The graphic depiction of slavery is astonishing, like the scene in which Calvin Candie forces two men to fight to the death for his amusement.
A: I was always aware those things existed. Mandingo fighting, which is what we call it, was part of the underbelly of slavery. It would be a perfect vice for Candie to indulge in, watching two men are fighting to death like dogs. Part of the idea behind Candie was he owns one of the biggest cotton plantations in the South, but he’s a fourth-generation Candie. He doesn’t care about the agriculture and the cotton anymore. The plantation runs itself by this point. So he’s this petulant boy emperor, this southern-fried Caligula. He finds hobbies and vices and pleasures to indulge in to keep him entertained.

IMO, this sounds like he's claiming it really happened historically.

Yes. Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained are both very similar in that they take a cruel historical period and "turn it up to 11" through exaggeration and dramatization. That, I think, can be a perfectly valid way to make art. Through exaggeration of the "facts" you can reach a different kind of "truth" that you can't reach by simply re-producing with verisimilitude. But I think that this maneuver depends upon the audience's familiarity with the facts-as-they-actually-were. And I wager that the moviegoing public is actually much more familiar with WWII history and the Holocaust than they are with American Slavery-- even though, for Americans at least, the events of the former happened on a different continent.

So what I'm saying is, the "Mandingo Fighting" in Django is much more likely to spread misconceptions about history among the viewers than the movie theater denoument in Basterds.

All that said-- does that mean that Tarantino can be faulted? I don't think so. But I do think that this movie ought to encourage us to teach American history more critically and carefully. Toward that end, I think that Django may actually help erode the Confederate apologist myths of "slavery wasn't that bad really" and "the Civil War wasn't about slavery."

I wouldn't say that Inglorious Basterds was exaggerated, in the sense that even though it was far from historically accurate, the Nazis were guilty of crimes far more insane and grotesque than whatever Tarantino depicted in that movie.
