I've been searching for articles and columns about past national teams and how they played. Very interesting articles of the 2006 Germany team. Hopefully, we can discuss all the teams virtues and nuances. Silverware is the goal obviously, how we get there, or how we failed getting there is the most interesting part @el-choul

In 2006 Guardiola had a column for the world cup and in particular he gave the Mexican team great reviews.

    First article by Guardiola http://elpais.com/diario/2006/06/13/deportes/1150149620_850215.html
It was really amazing to see how at times, the 3 leftsided players, (Salcido, Ramoncito, Guardado/Pineda) would take turns attacking the Argentine defense or the right sided players (Osorio, Gringo, Mario Mendez) attempted the same

    Memory refresher.

Interesting thread topic. I've seen this Guardiola article, by the way, used on several occasions to justify The Mustache That Shall Not Be Named. After all, if Pep is "praising" him, he must be teh awesome! And this has been by members of the media, no less. They fail to mention Pep's other quotes in the article (the riskiness, etc.) and that the article was about the game vs. Iran.

Note-let's not make this into a flame war. Thanks.

As for my contribution, here is the FIFA page for their technical reports.

I wonder how Lavolpe's formation would work with the current national team.

That really is part of the question many of us have. How would his team have played if superior talent like Nery Castillo and Cuauhtemoc Blanco had been available. The playing style of this particular team was definitely dictated by the players available/selected, for better or worse; a way to compensate for those deficiencies and exploit the team strengths.

There was a lot of hype for this 2010 team coached by Aguirre and tactically oriented by Mario Carrillo, his assistant. This team was also without its controversy, particularly in the selection of Oscar Perez as goalie.

In this iteration of El Tri, neither Osorio or Salcido reprise their roles as played in the 2006 world cup. Here, Marquez is the one man who's role has filled in for the lack of Pavel Pardo, who was not selected, as he is deployed in a deep-lying-playmaker role. Both dropping back to help the backline, when the team had possession and the fullbacks/wingbacks proceeded forward.

Aguirre's lack of trust in Hernandez who is in good form, a young up and comer, as Franco is placed in the starting lineup. Andres Guardado, coming off a strong La Liga season is not selected to start, although later subs in.

The backline of the 2010 squad was just like the 2006 with the inclusion of Rodriguez who had been in the squad for Germany. Their roles were not similar as this time there was some talented individuals who could one day carry the scoring burden. Although, it would not be the upcoming world cup in South Africa 2010.

On the role of Franco, he was deployed in the "poste" role, linking up with Vela and dos Santos who were still not ready to take on the burden of carrying El Tri in the biggest of stages. Although, both had been boons to the national team during the qualifying stages and 2009 edition of the Gold Cup. The game against England showed that they were not yet ready to arrive on the biggest of stages. At least Aguirre seemed to think so, and so the inclusions of Cuauhtemoc and Bofo Bautista were justified. Trustworthy contingencies had not yet appeared. As Hernandez was deemed too young and injuries to other frontmen like De Nigris and Sabah really dwindled the potential squad. Franco himself was injured in the England friendly and would performed injured throughout the world cup and looked terribly slow. The prospect of having Bautista, Cuauhtemoc Blanco and Franco on the field no doubt scared every Tri fan's hopes of successful World Cup without a doubt as they could bring the Mexican attack to a screeching "vuelta de rueda" speed.

I remember starting to read those reports what seems like ages ago, a few weeks back, but came away unimpressed when they mentioned Kikin Fonseca and/or Omar Bravo as key figures during Germany 2006.

In lieu of the recent Mexico friendlies, the most interesting tactical development for me is the move from the double pivot to a single pivot by Chepo's teams. Who has used Salcido as the Pivot and Zavala as the man to help, former forward converted centermid, link with the more offensive minded players.

In Mexico the move hasn't led too much debate. Although, in some dark and funky corners there will be those proclaiming a certain Gerardo Torrado's demise. On the other hand, in Netherlands, the use of a single or double pivot is causing lots of controversies.

Here is an interesting take by one blogger.

Although, within Mexican fans there is some debate as to whether Chicharito should be the starting hitman or if we should save him to be the change of pacer off the bench.
