I actually expected the review to be a lot more negative, coming from the Sydney Morning Herald and all
We're still number 1 http://www.smh.com.au/national/sydney-is-great-but-food-could-be-better-20090427-akn6.html
I like Sydney, but I can't take any assessment of it seriously that praises the public transport system.
Sorry to re-open this thread, which has a clearly incorrect title. You just wait...soon, Melbourne will have two different public transport systems running at the one time. Myki + Connex/MTrain = Melbourne PT system on speed. Its going to be really f***ed up!
Hahaha What the fck since when did we ever have a "decent" public transport system. Shitty Rail has to be one of the worst actually it is the worst rail transport system in the world. Who ever wrote that article on saying public transport is even some what decent is on some serious Kings Cross crack. Eh and don't even get me started with the NSW Government.
I've never been one to go knee deep in pissing matches about cities, but fair dinkum, Sydney is shit. It really is.
Is it really that bad to live in these places!? I just got back from Melbourne and Sydney (and Cairns and Perth, which is a terribly boring place for my money) and I loved those places. Especially Melbourne. I'm finishing my master's now in the next half a year to a year and am thinking sort of hard about attempting to find a job for a year or so down under. At least just to experience living in a big city and in some place that's not exactly the US. Anyone experienced with doing this? Or any advice from Aussies? (even "don't" is good. )
I think (at least from my POV) the difference comes between visiting (especially when young/ single/ no kids/ with money) and living there. I loved New York and London when I went there, but now with kids I would hate living there, similarly Sydney would be the first city I would tell people to visit in Australia, but it is the last place I want to live.
Guys, lets be honest, all bullshit aside, Sydney is a blow hard version of New York - It sounds good and looks the part but it's a shithole.
I always describe Sydney as like that pretty blonde bird at school that everyone wanted to pants, but she's as shallow as a puddle and dumb as dogshit whilst still managing to believe her shit doesn't stink. So you f*ck her and then you dump her cos you can stand her everytime she opens her mouth. Not a moment too soon, cos she was gonna dump you as your daddy doesn't earn enough money or you didn't play GPS rugby for the right school XV. Melbourne is like that slightly less attractive smart chick that gets overshaddowed by the 'hot' chick..one day you get talking to her and you realise she's kind of cool, really smart and has a great attitude, you just like being around her..so you f*ck her fall in love with her and she's the bird you end up with because like Ogres.."she's got layers" Melbourne by virtue of being overlooked by people blinded by Sydney's beauty, has arts and a real sports culture. a transport system that works, a cafe culture you'd die for and the feel of a place you could live in, as long as you remember to pack your umbrella every damned day - God she can be an unpredictable MILF sometimes eh
well during my world travels i have told anybody considering a trip to australia to spend some significant time in melbourne as it is more culturally sophisticated than sydney... i also tell them that because of this fact melbourne residents certainly know how to take "smugness" to the next level. I also tell any football fans to get along to a victory match to catch a glimpse of kevin muscats ugly bald head....
LOL comparing that crap bridge to the great Sydney Harbour bridge, its like comparing a sardine to a barramundi. Seen our harbour fireworks on NYE? Much much better than yours. I admit our current casino looks like a dog just vomited all over the place, and is tasteless and tacky as hell, however a massive upgrade is about to begin. Sydney is not a flat boring place with a small brown river running through it, we are one of the most beautiful citys in the world, visit our harbour on a sunny day and discover why Melbournites like you have been desperately comparing their city to Sydney for over a century, where as most Sydneysiders rarely even speak about Melbourne, its like who cares dude?
Sydney Olympic games. Melboring Commonwealth games. Sydney beautiful beaches and harbour. Melboring shitty beaches and dirty brown river.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/01/22/3118843.htm Adelaide crowned nation's most livable city Updated Sat Jan 22, 2011 12:41pm AEDT Adelaide achieved an overall livability score of just over 63 per cent. (ABC Adelaide: Brett Williamson) A national survey by the Property Council of Australia has ranked Adelaide as the nation's most livable city. More than 4,000 residents of capital cities were asked to rank the importance of 17 key attributes, including school facilities, natural environment, public transport and traffic congestion, and how their city rated on each. Adelaide achieved an overall livability score of just over 63 per cent, slightly ahead of Canberra which came in second. The South Australian Government was also rated as the best performing, with 54 per cent of respondents rating its performance as excellent, good or fair. The Northern Territory government achieved the lowest ranking of just 36 per cent. Darwin has been voted the second least livable city in the country. The survey shows residents think the city rates worst for good schools, health care services and affordable housing. The survey also ranked Darwin as not having an affordable standard of living and as the worst aesthetically designed city. Darwin residents ranked the city well for its road network and lack of traffic jams, good economic and employment opportunities, and a diverse range of people who get along well. The Property Council says governments should use the survey to help provide better services. South Australian executive director Nathan Paine says the survey will now be conducted annually. "It's really about putting a spotlight onto Australian cities, saying that most Australians believe that we can support growth, but that population growth and economic growth has to be managed," he said. "What we'll be doing is giving these results to the Federal Government and the state governments around the country and sitting down to talk with them about areas that need to be improved." Least livable - Sydney polled the lowest score of just above 55 per cent. New South Wales opposition planning minister Brad Hazzard says the Labor Government has let the residents of Australia's largest city down. "Residents of Sydney, whether they're coming in on jam-packed trains - often not air conditioned - from the western parts of Sydney; drivers sitting in cars in traffic jams," he said. "I think we all know that state Labor in its last 16 years has taken their eye off the infrastructure situation and we've all been left with a situation unfortunately where Sydney is slipping behind."
