Hey guys, the title says it all. For my club I've been playing a conservative center back. Meaning I watch the play develop and jump in when needed. For my high school they want me to play right back. What should I do dIfferently now that im playing RB?

    Thanks!

Matters how your coach is. In a perfect world you're main duty is to mark the winger and back post, but now you can run forward and join in on the attack. Just communicate and move, you should be fine

Typically, the outside back position will require more running, so be ready for that. You also need to communicate well with your winger (midfielder) because you will need someone to help if you get into a 2 v 1 situation.

Just out of curiosity (I'm trying to get back into playing shape), how much more running...?

I read that a typical player runs about 4-6 miles a game, you think the upper end of that?

Hmm.. I'd say professional players run more than that. I'm an amateur player and run 11km per game (on average), I also play full back, and quite an attacking one at that.

Don't take anything of note from that, it's just my personal experience.

Well, it's better than where I have been getting my information (random Google searches :) )

    Thanks!

I will conservatively say add about 20% to that. It really depends on how you play that position. Do you run up to join the attack every opportunity you get, or do you pace yourself and do it in stretches. Personally, when I play fullback, I overlap in stretches, and conserve energy when I can.

I always tended to stay back, but the last time I played I was getting a lot less conservative.

Well, it sounds like if you are playing less conservatively, then you have the lungs to do the extra running required at that position. Depending on when you play your games during the week, try doing some interval work, if you feel you need more repeated speed endurance.
