Chicago selects Baggio Husidic I wonder if Barnes, Hertel or Adams or Patterson will still be around? DC takes Milos Kocic
Ives seems to be going back on his word, saying that TFC will hold onto Frei. Makes sense, they had a lot of problems in net last year.
Chicago pick MD Baggio Husidic, Gen. Adidas player from University of Illinois at Chicago: A slow style play making midfielder. Great passer and ball handlers but wants to slow the pace to a deliberate style. May not fit the fast paced MLS. Dominates the mid-tier Horizon league. I’m not sold he’ll ever amount to anything in MLS.
Monty - The Revs are starting to pick bigger... the first was 5'8" the second was 5'9"... Quick - Who's left who's 5'10?
DC picks GK Milos Kocic, from Loyola College: The second Serbian in the top six, the 6-5 Kocic transferred to Loyola from St John’s after red-shirting there in 2005. Listed as a Junior, Kocic is going to the MLS Combine and is draft eligible as he also graduates in December. Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference First Team in 2007 and 2008, Kocic garnered a Second Team All-American nod this year with a 0.87 GAA and 12 shutouts. His 17 shutouts in 2007 tied LMU Alum Zac Thornton’s school record as Kocic led the country with a 0.47 GAA.
KC picks FW Doug DeMartin, from Michigan State: A really smart and savvy player for the front line or maybe even wide midfield. But is soccer smarts enough? Pace is a problem. The 6-0 red shirt senior set the Big Ten on notice in his junior year with 12 goals to be named a unanimous first teamer. Apparently the Big Ten wasn’t paying attention cause DeMartin grabbed 17 goals this year to lead the defensive minded Spartans to both the regular season and tournament Big Ten titles. His 17 goals this season were the most since 1968 when Tony Keyes scored 28. He also picked up the Big Ten Player of the Year nod, only second in MSU history, and a Second Team All-American honor. DeMartin has a good soccer brain with terrific positional sense and good vision, but isn’t highly regarded for athleticism. DeMartin finishes his career with 38 goals which rank fifth on MSU’s all-time list. Michigan Bucks in PDL 05, 07-08.
Ives says Alston and Jeremy Hall are the leading candidates from this draft class to earn a USMNT cap. Can't help but be happy with the pick, he'll certainly push Heaps and Albright to perform on a constant basis. Doesn't show much faith in Igwe though.
KC picks MD/FW Graham Zusi, from Maryland: Smart player, dedicated leader. I like him much better wide in midfield or as a second striker than I do as an attacking mid. If only he were one step quicker.Zusi, the standout leader and big game player for the National Champs, has slid down some charts as time moves on from the College Cup, but not this one. You see, even though he plays in the midfield for the Terps and is listed there by most people, I’ve never thought he was much of a midfielder. Instead I see a high winger or withdrawn striker with a tremendous long range shot, a great free kick, fantastic leadership skills, professional work rate, a quick burst, and a opportunistic streak and sense of timing. Is he can’t miss? No, but if you need someone to play the high wing in a 4-3-3 or behind a target as a second striker, you can’t do much worse than Zusi. A strong combine might prove he’s not this year’s Xavier Balc. Ends Terp career with 28 goals and 20 assists playing at the highest possible college level.
I'm not sure it's a completely a confidence issue in Igwe (although personally, I'm not wild about him), but also a how will replace Heaps someday. How may years does he have left> 1? 2?
