Sorry, didn't know where else to post this. I'd like to study abroad at some point in time, and I figured doing my graduate studies in Spain would be something I could consider. I've still got a couple years to go, but I'm a nerd and wanted to do some research.

Anyone know if it would be possible to study in Spain without major fluency in Spanish? I would be attempting a Masters in Mathematics.

    Cheers :)

As someone that's done the opposite (undergrad in Spain, grad studies in Canada), I'm afraid what you are looking for doesn't exist.

First, Master's programs are not very structured in Spain, traditionally you did the German route and went from long undergrads into PhD studies. We're slowly getting the hang of Master's, but they are quite different from what you would encounter in Canada: first, they are expensive, so there is very little competition and low academic entry requirements, and second they are not academically stimulating, but rather a glorified way of getting a good job placement. And English is generally not an option.

There are exceptions, of course, but those are mainly located in private universities/specific postgrad schools, which makes them even more expensive and less likely to be in the field you are looking for; there are a few MBAs and international business/affairs programs that are quality and taught in English, but that's about it.

You certainly can study a Masters or undergraduate programs without speaking a word of Spanish. But specifically a Masters in Mathematics in English in Spain I would bet little for that.

    Try asking these people:

Thanks for the responses. I wasn't expecting anything good, maybe I'll have to move to Spain after I finish formal schooling.

    Cheers.

    Good thread.

I'm also looking for universities in Spain which offered English master program for Law or Human Right, preferably during the first semester/year in English and in Spanish after that as I can't speak Spanish at all right now.

I'm on a tight budget and Laudrup said it's expensive, first thing I wanna know, how much does it cost for master program tuition fee in general? I can only afford to pay € 5000/year (and a little bit more for my daily life). I understand good education doesn't come cheap but I was hoping since some posters here is Spanish/been in Spain maybe you can help me to find out more information about not so expensive but good universities.

I tried to find it myself but most of what I found the range is vary between €10.000-€17.000 and they don't offer scholarship or tuition waive. Thanks in advance.

I really don't know if you can find a Masters program for 5.000 € a year. Sounds very difficult unless as part of a sort of scholarship or special program. You can always try to ask for that, specially if you come from Banda Aceh. Maybe there are some support & development agreements with your local universities or government after the tragedy. You can always ask, there is always surprises and programs or discounts for people coming from certain areas of the World.

I may think of public Universities being cheaper, and there is hundreds of them all over Spain. I guess you would need to ask one by one because I don't know of a centralized office where they could know all the programs of all the public universities of Spain.

You may start by asking in the largest university of Spain, the Universidad Complutense of Madrid and ask for all of this we have spoken. What programs they offer in English, fees, discounts, scholaships, special programs or agreements for students coming from your place... Ask them also where can you ask for the whole Spain, a centralized office for information for foreign students prospecting to study here.

These are private agencies dedicated to study-abroad and languages. They charge for their services but they may give you a first clue or all the information you need. I know both well personally. Be careful with paying too fast and try to double check. They may say they know everything but they surely won't. Try to investigate by yourself writing in English to the International Offices of all the universities you find. That is what I did years ago and ended up taking a completely free 1-year Masters program in Denmark in Economics. I needed to put many hours and e-mails on the internet before I found it.
