In my mind a high school teacher is in a more coercive position than a university professor, but yeah it does matter that high school students are usually underage. Is there a substantive difference between a HS teacher sleeping with an 18-year-old student and a college professor sleeping with an 18-year-old student? I'm satisfied that there's enough of a difference to make one criminal (assuming coercion in both situations, which of course must be proved). The second one is definitely sexual harassment and justification for firing and lawsuit. I don't know - maybe it's not logical or rational. But I'm not uncomfortable with the high school situation being criminalized.
It's nothing to do with a need to 'identify as perpetually sexually voracious'.... it's to do with the fact that most 17 year old males are horny idiots *. Having said that I absolutely agree the problem is one of the power and position of one party over another and that's the case REGARDLESS of which sex they are. That's why it's important this sort of stuff is stamped out as far as possible. * Bear in mind, I'm working from memory here
This one (29 years old) decided to do the deed with a 16 year old-DURING school hours, IN her classroom. She then went on the run. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/crime/fl-teacher-teen-sex-accusation-20130125,0,7044556.story
She's 29? She looks like a high school student. Ah well I suppose I'm getting at the age where anybody under 30 looks like a child.
The media was talking to kids outside Plainfield High and most of them were like "he knew what he was getting into." The idea that women can't be child predators is still quite common.
I suspect that if that female teacher had slept with a girl rather than a boy the take would be different.
There was one that made headlines in NYC a few years ago when two female teachers at "Horndog High" were getting it on in the classroom when a custodian caught them: The appalling facts follow: In 2009, Brito and Mauro went out to dinner before they were supposed to attend a musical show at Madison. Brito had a martini and a shot of tequila before heading to the school. There, they wound up in Mauro’s darkened third-floor classroom, where a janitor stumbled on the scene and called three security guards. He testified that he had seen a woman topless on the floor. One of the guards testified that she saw Brito “naked on the floor with her legs . . .,” and that’s as far as we’ll go in a family newspaper. A second security guard told of seeing Brito semi-topless and getting dressed. An assistant principal said she found Brito “leaning against a desk and zipping up her boot and buttoning her blouse,” the judge wrote, adding that Brito grabbed the assistant principal’s arm and “begged her not to ‘say anything’ ” Brito denied impropriety, stating that she was prone because she was hypoglycemic and needed insulin, which Mauro was on the verge of administering when she dropped a medical kit on the floor and knelt to pick it up, placing her in a position easily misunderstood for sexual contact Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/horndog-high-offender-pass-article-1.1096718#ixzz2JHeER300
"Appalling?" It's two adults making out. They shouldn't have done it in a classroom, of course, but it's not as if students were around. Was it also appalling that back in the day my-wife-to-be and I visited the office on a Friday night after a few drinks? Prudes are so silly.
This thread would be a lot sexier if we stop posting pictures of the people involved. It's anticlimactic.
The Horndog High story would have fit this magazine nicely, if it still existed - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/True_Story_(magazine)
See post #4 in this thread for my intitial reaction. Age-wise, the teacher and student are closer in age than the teacher and me.
I was joking with my wife about how a 25 year old woman in the office is perfect for my 19 year old son, only of course she'd never be interested in him. Just a kid and all. My wife reminded me of the irony, as she is 6 years older than me! But we didn't meet when I was 19. Age differences mean less and less over time.
Are you saying that a professor student relationship would not be a big deal at most American universities?
Yes and no. I think it would be a big deal for the professor's job status. It wouldn't be a scandal salacious Internet story, however, nor would criminal charges be found. When I was in college, a number of junior/senior girls slept with their teaching assistants and/or assistant professors. They were too mature and sophisticated to fool around with undergrad guys, you see. So if I were answering this question 30 years ago, I would have said no it's not a big deal at any level for the professor. But I'm pretty sure that has changed.
Yeah, it used to be policemen were the definition. When THEY started looking young you knew you were in trouble. Unfortunately I've got to the point where many politicians look young and attractive. I think it's called 'Sad Old Bastard', (or SOB), but, whatever it is, it's not a good stage in one's life
I remember the first time that I was older than a professional athlete, and then the last time I was younger than a professional athlete. That's a rite of passage. As with Playboy playmates. They also go from being all older to all younger, but that cycle happens much more quickly than with athletes. Now it's the coaches who are younger than me. Not Fergie though.
I'd better do it before someone else does, (and YES, I'm looking at you Cris ). Of course, it applies just as much to me
Sorry about that ... and from someone else who was a fellow 'toy boy' too* .... very mean of me I'd say. * Many years ago it has to be said.
