Anything is offensive when used in certain context. See, when i say "Puyol is a caveman, a beast", after he scores a header, it is not an insult, it is used to highlight the amount of physical effort and strength he puts in it. When we are at dinner and you fart and burp like a pig, me saying "behave, you caveman", 'caveman' is an offensive term. the word "gay" was used in a demeaning context, which is why it was offensive. English is not my first language, but apparently, i need to help you out with it, although things like that are pretty much the same in every language i would guess.
