Didn't mean to be cryptic or coy - "The Inner Light". Won the first Hugo for a TV episode in about 25 years, since the original series last did it.
So have we figured out who Benedict Cumberbatch is? Besides Sherlock, Smaug and that guy from Tinker, Tailor Soldier? Khan? Gary? Noobie?
doomp poomp poomp- doobadooba doomp poomp poomp- POOOOM a-dooba doomp poomp poomp Where no maaaaaaaaan has gone beee-fore (doomp poomp poomp POOOOM- a-dooba doomp poomp poomp- doobadooba doomp poomp poomp) Ah waaa-as Trek-kin' into darknessssssssssss (a-dooba doomp poomp poomp POOOOM- a-dooba doomp poomp poomp) Carry on...
Just got back from it-- I found it a lot of fun and definitely worth seeing. Cumberbatch was great as the villain (but really, who doubted that?). The character interactions were all very good; kudos to the actors. Although some of the characters have NOTHING to do in this movie (Sulu especially). Lens flares abounded, of course. As much as I enjoyed it, I found myself making a mental checklist of all the things I hope JJ doesn't do in Star Wars VII. But I don't want to dwell on that here, for fear of de-railing the thread.
Saw it this morning and loved it. So much I want to discuss, we need a [R] in the title. One question though, was it me or did that alien in the brig look like a Mon Calamari?
I had pretty much the same reaction. The big revelation caught me by surprise, pleasantly, and I even liked the it toyed with the alternative time line established in the previous film, despite the fact that I dislike time travel plots (note to those that haven't seen it yet: there is no time travel in this film).
I saw it yesterday and thought it was fantastic. And yes, I was a huge fan of the original series. I thought TNG was OK, DS9 meh, Voyager was boring and Enterprise sucked. JJ Abrams has revived this franchise and made it fun again.
I know we all talk about the movie/special effects, etc., but I just love Michael Giacchino's soundtrack. I think he does a great job on so many of the shows/movies he scores. Heck I wouldn't mind seeing him do Star Wars either, but I think John Williams has that locked down.
A couple of references to the other series as well: Section 31 got a passing mention in Into Darkness. It's a Federation special operations unit that pops up in Deep Space Nine and in Enterprise; it's primarily defined by not being constrained by the usual rules and regulations. I don't it occurs in the other series or any of the other movies.
Am I the only one who thinks that Pyne's performance as Kirk was very underwhelming? I really pitied him having to act alongside Cumberbatch...his shortcomings looked terrible when you're having such a great actor and villain next to him. Not to mention that JJ Abrams made Kirk not only reckless but also stupid. The chemistry between him and Spock suffers from that quite a bit, too.
Hm, I thought Pine was pretty great, actually. My problem was more with the character of Dr. Marcus. She seemed very shoehorned in. I get why they put her in there, in terms of the importance of that character in the original series and previous movies. But in this movie, she was just a boring character that didn't have much to do. And the underwear scene was a really cynical and obvious way to put gratuitous skin into the movie.
Well I cannot eliminate the possibility that the German voice acting was just shit. I'll have to watch it in English once it's out on BR.
I just watched it tonight. Pretty entertaining I thought with some good smiles and I liked the references from the other series. Thanks to the guys who watched it early and never gave out any spoilers. I didn't know the plot at all so I was 'pleasantly' surprised. Cumberbach was excellent in his part and you're right as an actor he really showed Pine up. Pine did OK though in his part though as did Zack Quinto as Spock. The women of Star Trek have always, unfortunately, been window dressing. Pegg as Scotty is great and Karl Urban as Bones is inspired. Yeh, guess I enjoyed it a lot. Oh and in further news, Chris Pine "Came Out". That follows Quinto (Not that there's anything wrong with that) Wonder what that'll do to any future Startrek casting.
