This was being discussed in the Expansion Draft thread, but I guess we can use a whole thread on it.

They will use him as trade bait and Houston will get him back. I am not sure this strategy worked for the Dynamo. Maybe it has already been agreed to by Dom and Jesse.

Yea, I'm thinking they want Hainault. And they pretty much hold the cards.

I disagree. Ching has already said that he would rather retire and join the front office than play there. I wouldn't be surprised if Ching announced his retirement today and was hired on by the end of the evening. That was those pseudo-french bastards get nothing but the hatred of our fan base.

    Can't you retire and unretire?

    sorta like what Onstad did?

    What are the rules?

I'll start a collection and we can pay the fines if we had to.

No loss to them right? They'd still have the cap space to sign someone else. If they can't swing a deal, they just knocked off a player from a conference rival.

Pretty sure Montreal hold his rights if he decides to un-retire. For how long, I don't know.

Yes, they would. Onstad was able to play for DC because we let them have his rights.

Bastille Day!!!! Some heads are going to roll north of the border. Damn Habs. Unbelievable. Why don't you just piss in someone's cheerios.

Marsch is scum-not because he used to play for them, because of this pick. What a f$%#ing Mo Johnston move.

I overheard some interesting gossip over the past 3 weeks. Perhaps losing Ching was part of the plan?

If the plan gets a real DP up top-then Thanks Brian, we'll hook you up. Retire, stay in town, help Habitat.

But we need some scoring punch.

If he was gonna retire, why not just retire? Once again we get into an "In Dom we trust" situation. And after he got them back to the Cup Final I'm not gonna say there is no plan here, but it's gotta be a ridiculously complex plan if so. I can't figure any reason to play these games.

    A) To protect the Dynamo from losing a player
    B) To make Montreal waste a pick

Not saying this is the case, but if it was, then those two things would be a bonus effect.

Technically after Onstad announced his retirement, the Dynamo released him. Any other team could have signed him to a playing contract.

If Ching retires Montreal will have to officially release him before he could sign back with the Dynamo. And they are obviously not going to do that.

Re: Dynamo's Ching says he'll retire if taken in expansion draft

Either of those options seems a stretch to me. They could have left Colin Clark unprotected. Not saying I want anyone to leave, just saying that risking the face of the franchise so that you don't lose Cam Weaver or Colin Clark seems kinda goofy.

And I REALLY can't accept the idea of doing it so Montreal would waste a pick. That's absolutely absurd.

That's the input if Ching really retires.

You asked "Why not just retire?" and I gave you two advantages of retiring after the draft instead of before it.

Yeah I knew what you meant. I was trying to say that I don't see your ideas as advantageous to the Dynamo or Ching.

    I don't know...this is a weird situation for sure.
