I would have preferred that MLS could sign and acquire more players in the current transfer window and not have to wait five or six months for their arrival.

But overall, this has the potential to be a very good signing and is the type of thing that MLS needs to be doing (in part).

Maybe we should discuss how the league could make that happen.

We could. Or we could just wait around until more/all foreign leagues move their primary transfer window to January and foreign-club-player-contract end dates to December.

Maybe it's time to start looking upon this as typical of the Galaxy and not the league as a whole. Signing older "name" players is not, despite what the more ignorant MLS detractors need to pretend, a league-wide phenomenon.

Older "no-name" players is more MLS' specialty. ;)

We also need to look at this on a case by case basis.

One could be ignorant and say "this is just MLS signing another 34 year old player" or you could peel the onion one friggan layer and say "this is MLS signing one of the best players from one of the better teams in the world"

Anyone who thinks Lampard is done has to be blind or does not follow his play at all. He has been fantastic for Chelsea this year and none of the fans or other players want him to leave.

he has 7 goals in 14 appearances lol...anyone that needs an answer to his play watch the arsenal chelsea game sunday morning.. he's still one of the best central midfielders in the world. Galaxy fans are probably ecstatic about this because it has the potential to be even better than the Beckham experiment in regards to quality of play on the field.

I take it LA fans are willing to overlook the whole 9/11 "incident" that Lamps took part in? Just wait 'til the conservatives hear of this move!

    Everyone is joking.

(But, all threads about MLS off-season or in-season transactions could potentially be threads about how the league could best align its primary and secondary transfer windows to perhaps be most useful to the overall business of the league.)

I certainly hope Lamps (or whomever) arrives in time to help LAG's 2013 MLS campaign, and it will be a bit of a shame if he (or Becks or whomever LA doesn't bring back this spring) is a missing piece that prevents LA from doing well (or relatively better) within the spring knock-out stages of the 2012-13 CCL.

People do stupid crap when they're 22 and drunk out of their minds.

That aside, Frank Lampard is a really, really good player, and this is an excellent move. The guy probably has 3 more good years in him.

"when they're 22" or "drunk out of their minds" is typically enough to do stupid stuff.

combined, that's the exceptionally stupid platform.

Agreed. But in terms of MLS's schedule, that will likely get rounded down to 2.5 good seasons, and likely not rounded up to 3.5 good seasons.

Although, MLS did get Becks to re-up for a second contract, and he actually turned out to be relatively useful for 5.5 seasons (and not just the initial term 4.5 seasons) +/- all of that time spent on loan or out with injury.

I know he keeps saying that he wants to finish out the year with Chelsea, but there is always the possibility that Chelsea tries to get him to move now so they can free up that money for someone in the current transfer window (though I do realize that Chelsea doesn't need to free up salary space with their owner).

I agree. I'm fine with him coming to MLS. He can still ball. No idea why Chelsea didn't extend him 1-2 more years. Now, I hate Chelsea, so I'm glad he's leaving. I think him leaving hurts their team.

I like this move for LAG and if another DP, preferably a bigger name DP comes in to replace Landon, even better, of course that depends on who that DP would be if Landon leaves....

From an MLS perspective though, it's not great, just alright. Lampard himself won't increase road attendance near what Becks did or have much effect in the media. I don't think Keane moved the needle at all and Lampard is probably comparable.

There were two DP's which seemed to move the needle imo, and that was Becks and Henry. Three if counting Landon but I think he's leaving. Henry is still here, but signing Lampard doesn't help in having a new face of the league.

There are 0 - 2 players in the world that would move the needle in the same range as Becks. Messi and Ronaldo. Neither are anywhere near coming any time in the next 5 years. I think this is/would be a fine signing. They could have gotten a little more marketing bang, but he'll definitely give the league some positive cred more than quite a few other DPs recently. Is he still in consideration for England or has he retired? I feel like I may have heard of him retiring from international play. I think Henry and Landon (if he comes back) are the "face of the league" and that's fine with me. No one is like Beckham and no one will be in MLS for a while to come.

Precipitation of MLS as retirement league stays strong and hurting the league in TV ratings big time.
That's a major stigma for the league and %95 of soccer fans in America stay away from MLS .

This doesn't have much effect one way or another. The stigma is there and will continue whether or not Lampard comes. That's not the main reason (not directly anyway) that fans don't watch MLS as much I don't think, but this isn't really the place for that debate.

Uh oh, Espanyol signed a Martin Petrov (34 year old player from the English Championship). Guess people are going to stop watching La Liga because it is a retirement league. Fulham signed Georgios Karagounis (35 year old) in September, I guess all those soccer fans are going to stop watching the EPL.

The simple fact is that no matter what Lampard does it will be viewed in a negative light by some people. If he chooses Italy over MLS then it is proof that MLS just isn't good enough to lure big name players. If he signs with MLS it shows that he is washed up and MLS is a retirement league. Just forget about it and move on. I'm pretty sure that 90-95% of the clubs in the world would love to have Lampard on their team. Just be thankful that MLS can get a player of his caliber at all when most leagues (even in Europe) couldn't.
