For those with Comcast Digital Cable and/or Comcast HD-DVR, the recently-added Something Weird subsection (under the The Cutting Edge section) includes a lot of low-budget black & white 1950's (as well as from a bit before and a bit after) exploitation flicks, atomic horror drive-in type films and trailers, Civil Defense "Duck and Cover" shorts, and other unearthed goodies from before your time. And best of all, it's all free (besides the regular monthly digital cable subscription, of course). GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
My favorite was the 20+ minute compilation of old toy ads. Really cool. The A-bomb scare flick rocked, too, but now I can't find it again.
I just saw This Is Not A Test on "Something Weird", and it was actually pretty entertaining. Despite the image above, it's a black & white film (and was presented as such on "Something Weird"). GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Cool old Roller Derby flick on there as well. Footage of derby queen Anne Calvello when she was young. Priceless. Couldn't find the montage of toy ads though.
It seems that they've recently replaced some of the content, so go check out the subsection again. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Cringing with the fear of having been misled, they're replacing my DirecTV with Comcast (it finally came to my street) as I type this. Is it worth it? The sell-yer-soul-you'll-love-it guy couldn't even tell me if it got soccer channels, which is worrisome given my obsessive habit of daily check-ins to FSN and GOLTV. And how are they about trouble-shooting, as far as getting a real, live person who is both intelligible and helpful? Too much to ask?
I've hardly watched (or really had any desire to watch) any soccer the past two months, but from what I can remember, there certainly are soccer channels if you order either Comcast Digital Cable or the Comcast HD-DVR, the latter of which includes everything the former has plus HD channels (which you can watch even without an HDTV just as long as your TV has an S-video input - though there's an extra monthly charge for the DVR service, it's so worth it). And both include On-Demand service. There's Fox Soccer Channel on channel 401 (all in English), Fox Sports en Español on channel 602 (all in Spanish) and GolTV on channel 618 (in Spanish in the "Default Audio" and in the "Spanish" settings; in English in the "English" setting). And those are just the soccer-specific channels - there's also soccer games on ESPN, espn2, Univision, Telemundo, Galavision, occasionally on the various other "order-separately" ethnic channels (Italian, Chinese, Arabic,, French, Russian, etc.), and so on. As for the service: ever since Comcast took over the cable around here from AT&T Cable in December 2002, I honestly can't remember having any service problems (unlike with AT&T Cable). For example: from 2003 on, it's been increasingly easier to get MLS Direct Kick (though I have no idea about this year, as there's absolutely no reason for me get it now), and I've had a grand total of one problem with the package (an audio problem in early-2003 which was solved over the phone within two minutes), unlike with the previous ownership when the then-MLS Shootout Package would cut-out at the beginning of the later months to the point where they just didn't even bother fixing the problem anymore - and in 2002, AT&T Cable vehemently claimed that they weren't even gonna receive the package at all, so I ended up not having it that season. For general trouble-shooting: with what few problems I had during Comcast's reign, they've handled it promptly. I hope that helped. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Thanx for the info. Had to add GolTV and FSC. Now it's all about how much they'll try and jack up the $$$ when I'm not lookin', but at least they don't do contracts (hear that DirecTV and EarthStink?!?). Quick phone help so far. Glad we have a new computer wizard in-house to do the Cable modem, cuz the tech support couldn't figure that one out. It does zoom along the net faster than DSL, though. So when will we get Frogs games?
One of the nice things about getting the Comcast Digital Sports Tier that includes both GolTV and FSC is that it also includes the NFL Network and NBAtv. Those will only be available on DirecTV.* GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G * Just kidding (I think).
Actually, I'd rather have Krazy George do the color. Or better yet, have a three-man booth of Spartacus, KG and Ray Hudson. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
That would truly be "Something Weird". In that booth I'd hardly have a chance to get a word in edgewise.
Which sounds like the basis of a typical low-budget, black & white "Something Weird" film. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
