It still kills me how Houston 1836 can piss so many people off. I guess that's why the New England didn't call themselves New England 1776. But then their is the Philadelphia 76ers. I guess the Houston Logo must have had a Texan pissing on a Mexican flag.
Man-o-man are those examples completely incomparable. I highly doubt that there were very many British immigrants or people of recent British ancestry living in Philadelphia in 1964, when the Syracuse Nationals moved to town and took the name 76ers. And what exactly leads you to believe that there was any sort of issue with New England 1776? To my knowledge, the name was never even in consideration. Names of that sort weren't even in the running at the time the team was founded--Nike was pushing the league toward more "traditionally American" naming conventions. Neither of these two "examples" (because I'm not convinced you can accurately refer to either as such) has anything to do with the current debate surrounding the name "Chiefs." That you would even put them forward in the first place shows that you're pretty loose with the facts to begin with.
The only thing I could on twitter from basic search was a Quebecois soccer reporter saying (in French) that the team will be announcing the name change to the Chiefs
Still a "rumeur". But I think it's likely we will see a name change since it would be a bit anticlimactic to keep it as Silverbacks after months of promotions.
One difference being that people of British descent haven't been marginalized and persecuted systematically over the years and (more recently) made into political footballs. That kind of treatment tends to make people slightly gunshy over time. Then again, ******** it, white people from Ohio are always the best judges of whether or not something is or should be insensitive regarding people of color.
Why have a press conference to announce that your team's name is staying the same? Can you imagine the coverage? "Silverbacks to remain Silverbacks" "Silverbacks: 'Yep, still here'" "Area soccer fans shocked by debut of team that already exists" "Soccer team will apparently continue to play soccer, not rugby" Good luck ever getting local media to pay attention to your press releases again. For their sake, I sincerely hope the team is either rebranding or that they've got a similarly earth-shattering announcement lined up.
From their Facebook: "The winner of "Decision 2012" is SILVERBACKS! You'll notice the lack of a logo and that's because we'll be launching a logo design contest tomorrow! Stay tuned for details and thanks to all who voted!" So ANOTHER contest! YAY!
Glad to hear they will still be the Silverbacks. I like the current logo as well, guess the logo contest will keep up some interest in the offseason though.
Sevin, I apologize for my earlier post. I was completely wrong in my assumption that the ATL front office has a single clue. Wow. Good choice or not, it seems pretty idiotic to hold a press event for a non-change and to announce another pointless contest.
It was more a "fan event" than a "press event," wasn't it? Hey, when you're kind of irrelevant and the biggest press you've received lately is from hiring Wynalda as a temp and selling a home Open Cup game...I guess you gotta do something.
