I think it's just fun once in a while for everybody to be "into" the same thing briefly (I wasn't, but I get the appeal). Also--lots of Americans knew absolutely zilch about K-Pop prior to seeing that video. The novelty factor was quite high, aside from the earworm song and the dance move, which I have to admit made me laugh the first time I saw it.
Asia maybe. South African Hugh Masakela's "Grazing in the Grass" was a number one. It's not really what you meant, but The Seekers (Australia) hit number one with "Georgy Girl" (but only on Cashbox, not on Billboard.) Wouldn't be too sure that Sergio Mendes or Astrud Gilberto (Brazil) never made it to number one on some charts?
"Sukiyaki" by Ryu Sakamoto was #1 for 3 weeks in 1963. And don't forget Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass
Eh. Ice Cube was part of NWA, who did "F*** Tha Police." He then went solo and did "Amerikkka's Most Wanted," among other things. He's now doing Coors Light ads and Are We There Yet? (You can also do this exercise with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg.) I didn't give a damn then and I don't give a damn now.
Speaking of Ice, didn't Ice T sing "Cop Killer" -- and now he plays one on TV? Oh wait -- I meant "Ice Motherf*cking T"... Likewise, I could care less about what this dipstick sang about 10 years ago -- if it isn't enough to put him on a no-fly list, who am I to argue?
