Should the NYCosmos play at Red Bull Arena-Citifield while they build their own SSS in Queens?

Queens, NY seems to be the perfect place in term of fan support and atmosphere, but timing is a fact when building a SSS. My question is, should the league allow NY Cosmos to play their home matches at Red Bull Arena and Citifield while they build a SSS?

Okay wait, before anybody else says anything let me give you a heads up.

This has in fact been talked about quite a bit here. The Cosmos playing at citi field is a most likely scenerio. Playing at RBA( besides when they visit the red bulls) is not. If theres a stadium plan they'll get in the MLS. The league won't care if they play at CF or Hofstra or wherever else as long as eventually they wind up at their own place, nor would they care if it took a year or two as long as it isn't staring at dirt for years like what happend with RBA.

In my opinion, they should not play any home games at RBA, the point about building a proper rivalry in soccer between clubs has to do with turf. Red Bulls turf is the New Jersey and lower Manhattan part of the Metropolitan area and the rest of the Metropolitan area is Cosmos turf, yes there will be some over lapping of areas, but that's part of the tribalism of soccer. To have the Cosmos or NY2 play in the Red Bull Arena dilutes the process in building up this rivalry between the two clubs from different areas in the New York Metropolitan area.

For those of you who will ask, well what about the Chivas and Galaxy rivalry? Those two LA based clubs which share the same training grounds and stadium without no real individual identity are manufactured rivalries, I would say it's not a true rivalry when compared to the true rivalry that Portland and Seattle has in the MLS currently. Rivalries are about tribalism which translates to turf, it's us against them, my turf vs your turf...the Cosmos playing in Red Bull Arena will not work in the same way it's not really working for Chivas and building a true passionate fan base!

the idea of the second NYC team is to tap into the huge soccer markets in Queens, Brooklyn and Long Island. Markets that in bulk are not going to RBA. Putting a second team in RBA would dip into the RB fan base which as much as I want the NYC team, I dont want it to hurt the Redbull.

    It defeats the purpose.

Actually that does make me wonder what the exact boundries for these teams would be for marketing/events/ ads etc

I think everywhere west of the hudson should be exclusivley RB territory including Staten Island and upstate NY( namely Rockland and orange counties)

Cosmos country, assuming their stadium is in queens, should be exclusive to Long Island (+Bklyn and queens) and all counties east of the hudson including CT.

The bronx and manhatten should be fair game. Though in the end N jersey and LI are really what will end up being the centers of these two pieces of the same market.... Sorry to go off topic.

I live on Long Island, i can tell you RB fans are far and few (i've basically given up on them). Most people I know that like football, are holding out for the cosmos. It's cosmos or bust for them.

no cosmos = no support of MLS in general.

Not off topic at all, but for me it's easy to think that lower Manhattan would be part of this overlapping territory, RBA is easy accessible via the PATH from lower Manhattan and it may be even quicker to get to RBA than a soccer stadium out in Queens and I would think the same for Staten Island folks via ferry to White Hall station connecting to the Path at World Trade station.

If this Cosmos thing happens, I think the Red Bulls should focus their marketing of the club in lower Manhattan, Staten Island and all the cities around the City of Harrison such as Hoboken, Jersey City, New Brunswick, Newark especially the Iron bound section, Secaucus, Hackensack, Somerset, East and West Orange, Edison, Union City, Bergen and Weehawken. I think the demographics is there built in already for a tremendous fan base for the Red Bulls if the clubs is marketed correctly.

All other territories in the Metropolitan area commonly known as "Cosmos Country" would be marketing turf for the Cosmos which should include East of the Hudson river on the New York side from midtown north and all points east and Northeast.

Ok, its true maybe is a good idea not to play the temporarily home games at RBA, about just Citifield and then try to accommodate Cosmo's home schedule in such way that they dont have any conflict with the Mets. Remember the National and DC United lived in the same house for a couple of years and it worked out ok for both. However I do understand that this is a good plan as long as the NY Cosmos secure SSS in Queens, maybe near Citifield. I strongly feel that Queens is the perfect place for the Cosmos and I think you all agree on this one.

There is a thread here already discussing the Citi field option as a temporary stadium until a new stadium for the Cosmos is ready. As for Queens being the perfect place for a Cosmos stadium, it's about the only place as to the fact space big enough to build a stadium in New York City is very limited and costly!

You know how I feel about this brother. I understand that I am in a small minority who believes it would be ok for them to play a season in RBA. And I understand all the reasons why you and most everyone else thinks it's a bad idea. And you guys are entitled to the opinion because you live here and have a stake in it.

But for some guy 6000 miles away to constantly say that he thinks I -- we -- should be denied because if it means one season in NJ, a guy with no real personal stake in it at all, it is truly disrespectful.

People in Napoli and its environs have a right to say where Napoli should or shouldn't play. I don't.

If the Napoli would play not in Rome, but even only in Caserta ( 35 km to north of Napoli, BUT ANOTHER PROVINCE ), you can bet that it would there be a revolution of the fans. But I realize that you don't understand it and the identity concept and you only are able to say me that I can't have an opinion because I am 6000 miles away ........... Here in Napoli there are many Juve, Inter and Milan fans, which HAVE NEVER BEEN IN TORINO OR MILANO, but they are great fans of these teams and I respect them to 100 % and for me it has not importance if there are 1000 km between Napoli and Torino !!!!!

Come on now, isn't it premature to be talking about a Cosmos SSS, they barely have a team yet. They aren't even in a league yet, unless you count amature.

You know what they say in MLS... $$$ talks BULLSHIT WALKS!

How much do you think it costs to hire Eric Cantona, Cobi Jones from his Galaxy job, Gio Savarese, Pele, Giorgio Chinaglia, Carlos Alberto, the entire side playing in Old Trafford (McBride, Friedal, Cannavaro, Campbell, Pires, Nicky Butt, Viera, G. Neville, Dwight Yorke, Robbie Keane, Salgado), the PDL team, places to play for the PDL team, establish Cosmos Academies East and West, sell the kits and merchandise, and operate out of their SoHo office?
