A rivalry between those two nations is very unlikely. But they could be playing each other at the 2009 Island Games in Aaland.
Yeah, um, right. The only thing they are going to qualify for is frequent-use points at the hospital for all the frostbite they'll get.
FYP! But these games will probably be overshadowed by all the constant grassrolling that will take place!
I just saw this thread, but there is actually news on this front. Greenland's first artificial pitch opened in September in the town of Qaqortoq. It was built with a $400,000 FIFA grant, and $100,000 from local fundraising. The pitch is 35 meters by 64 meters, so its far from regulation size at 68 x 105. But, its a start.
...so if Greenland gets to join FIFA, then how long until the scientists based in Antartica get to field a national team (in CONMEBOL, due to proximity to the Tierra del Fuego)?
Seriously guys... after all it is a continent..... wouldn't Antarctica actually form it's own confederation?
If so, then we have two issues: 1) How many World Cup spots would the Football Confederation of Antarctica (FCA, to differentiate it from the CAF and AFC) get? - I'd say that they split half a spot with the OFC. So then, instead of the current system, you would make a three-team group (if the playoff involves the 4th place from CONCACAF or the 5th from CONMEBOL) or a four-team group with the third-place finishers from each group of Asia's final qualifying round. The group can be played at a neutral location, and only the winner of the round-robin qualifies for the World Cup. For instance, last time the winner-take-all group would have been: Saudi Arabia Bahrain New Zealand Antarctica 2) How do they participate in FIFA's other pan-Confederation tournaments? - The easiest way, to my mind, would be that for both the Confederations Cup and the Club World Cup, Antarctica (and Antarctica FC or whichever club champion they would have) would play home-and-away with the OFC winner, and winner of that goes to the big tournament.
Back to Greenland: if they were to join CONCACAF, then how would they qualify to the Gold Cup? I'd say that they could easily be tossed in as the eighth team/extra cannon fodder in the UNCAF Cup, which would help them out since they'd need to get used to that kind of environment for World Cup qualifying.
Respuesta: Re: Should Greenland become a member of UEFA or CONCACAF? Since you're getting all serious about this.... Antartica does not have established countries nor any government institutions. How do you expect them to form a football federation? The scientists at the bases there are all too busy studying the life of penguins and polar bears and global warming!
Re: Respuesta: Re: Should Greenland become a member of UEFA or CONCACAF? True, so then can they at least get a club like AS Monaco?
Greenland is part of North America on a RISK game board. Therefore, they must be part of CONCACAF. QED.
Imagine if that actually happened and they managed to beat one of the teams. Would be interesting to watch.
Just imagine the British reaction to seeing "God Save the Queen" drowned out by boos and whistles. Something along the "f'in animals"/"we'd never do that in Europe" variety.
Re: Respuesta: Re: Should Greenland become a member of UEFA or CONCACAF? There are no polar bears in Antarctica, but lots of penguins.
Re: Respuesta: Re: Should Greenland become a member of UEFA or CONCACAF? To be more precise. Falklands would play with 20 penguins and 3 imported Arctic bears as goalies.
Re: Respuesta: Re: Should Greenland become a member of UEFA or CONCACAF? And I thought Paraguay's D was mean... So for the polar-bear back-line/goalies, what constitutes a red-card offense?
In the long run they'd be better off in UEFA. Luxembourg and the Faroe Islands are better than the Bahamas and Virgin Islands in part because they play tougher competition. It isn't like Greenland could even qualify for the Gold Cup anytime soon regardless.
