Round 5 Select a player who has played a league match in 2012 Picks to be submitted by Monday 8pm (BST)
No problem. I've replied to your PM (with a hasty edit once I realised schwuppe has now picked). So basically nice can PM me and if he sends a pick not taken already he passes (and he has 3 attempts). I'll probably PM to let him know the situation even though I guess when he's next online he'll read this thread anyway.
There are very few active players that I like for my team, and they are all predictable choices. It's going to be hard to avoid a sheep, unless I get really lucky.
No word from nicephoras as yet, and I'll update everyone if I get a PM while lanman is away. My sheep suggestions for this round: Tommy Docherty Jack Burkitt Jackie Sewell
Here are a couple of sheep: Gershom Cox (England): Scored first ever official own-goal in an official League in 1888 Manuel Rosas (Mexico): Scored first World Cup own-goal in 1930
Maybe lanman can fill the All-Sheep XI with own goal scorers this time! As Excape Goat named an American Football player before I believe, I'll add a cricket player - Denis Compton (seems like he was a pretty good football player too, but like Sewell I guess not above the standard set so far).
Yeah but also someone called Aldo Donelli, who I know nothing about and wouldn't have been able to answer if the multiple choice options were: a) Soccer player, American football player and coach (apparently correct) b) Ice-cream maker from Venice c) Infamous gangster I don't know if like Compton he was better at his other sport, because my American Football knowledge is limited to Joe Montana, John Elway, Dan Marino, the Fridge, the Mannings, erm a few more maybe...
My all sheel XI for round 5. GK Brad Guzan [Aston Villa] RB Phil Bardsley [sunderland] CB Phillipe Mexes [Milan] CB Roger Johnson [Wolverhampton] LB Emerson [Benfica] RM Charles N'Zogbia CM Paul Pogba CM Daniel Pranjic LM Jérémy Mathieu ST Javier Hernandez ST Robinho
LOL, nice to know he was pretty good. We do need some decent sheep. We've gone downhill since Kennedy and Belletti.
Yeah, it's a bit of a guess but he did play for Arsenal for quite a while after they were already established as a top side. I'll leave further scouting to anybody who might want to take him (including lanman potentially). Sewell was a top player for Notts County in lower divisions then was the most expensive player in the country when bought by Sheffield Wednesday but I don't think he'd be near an All-Time England squad (he had 8 caps IIRC). Likewise, Burkitt was Nottingham Forest's captain when they won the FA Cup but was uncapped. My other suggestion Docherty was more famous as a manager, though did play for Scotland including against his Preston team-mate Finney (there were comments at the time that Finney should get tax relief for his ten dependants and they got relegated when he was injured for quite a few games). I could add another former team-mate of Finney's at Preston and famous manager too - Bill Shankley. There's probably a number of managers from the English game who'd be valid - I'll just name one more though who isn't in comme's lists and I think was a solid but not brilliant International right-back- Alf Ramsey (maybe comparable to Kennedy and Belletti overall in an all-time context).
Actually, that guy coached the American football team of my university(no, I did not go Ivy League). So that was the reason I nominated him. He palyed for the USA at World Cup 1934. Supposingly, he was offered a contrast with a Serie A club, but he turned down and became an American Football coach, instead. I could not find any information, but I think I read about it. He held multi records for the USMNT...... but Americans are very creative in that department. He was the only American player who had scored against Italy for 58 years. His strike rate per game was highest or something liked that. He also was the only or two or three Americans to have scored 4 goals in one match. He also held a number of weird records in American Football coach too. He reminded me of Forrest Grump. http://www.soccerreportextra.com/hi...buff-donelli-and-the-first-usa-v-italy-match/
Another interesting story Excape Goat - I wasn't expecting that! But I can see that he is indeed the player who scored 4 on his debut then played and scored in a 7-1 loss to Italy at the World Cup.
I haven't discussed this with lanman but I guess Nice will be given further time to catch-up (till the end of this next round perhaps?) however if for whatever reason he decides not to continue then the following siuation would occur that I remembered about and felt it was fair to notify cr7torossi about as he's a first-timer who may not have read extensively the first Sheep Draft thread: As nicephoras took Romario on pick 1 and cr7torossi failed trying to pick him on pick 2 of the 1st round, cr7torossi would be given the option to take Romario instead of Gerets. Similar things happened in the first Sheep Draft and I know that schwuppe would've been allowed Hidegkuti had Peru FC not returned to this draft. So, just a heads-up to cr7torossi - it could be that nicephoras does return though of course still and maybe that will happen after the Chelsea-Bayern game indeed....
I have a few more interesting sheeps for this round. I also recalled a guy who won an Olympic medal in football and later a Nobel prize for something. And there was a French player who later become a Nazi collaborator.
