Looks like Italy was a team made for a WC peak performance (see ELO in this era comparing with WCs performance)

If i'm not mistaken, also italian clubs performance in european cups were dissapointing in late 70s.

The rankings in the 2nd mid 70s seems a bit overated.
One of the reasons is the rankings from 1980-81 with the opening market to foreign players, not showing a critical increase of top players rating (wich is contradictory, imo)

Yeah, that could be disappointing

What i mean is that Italy before WC 78 & 82 began, wasn't among favourites to win it. Also for WC'78 Cabrini recently became a starter for Juve.

Roberto Filippi would be a perfect candidate for a possible "League Legends All-Time Draft" it seems. Almost unknown outside his domestic realm, but must have been some kind of player.

That is also my idea. 1977-1978 and all other tournament years show little overlap with the roster but 77-78 does show a big overlap with club alignment. 6 out of 10 players in the top 10 were from Vicenza, who ended second. That is unbelievable.

Or the Italian league was enormously corrupt.
