I thought Joey had a good football brain, and knew when to make runs out of the midfield, but, I thought his biggest downside was that he just lacked the pace to be a wide player in this league.

Yes, and it should also make Ballouchy able to travel out of the country for road games.

Hmm, I kind of thought the opposite. He seemed to have good enough wheels, but seemed to just blow it time after time on his decision-making / execution when he had the ball. Kind of like Salinas, but not as good at driving the ball down field in 1v1 situations as Shea is.

I thought Gjoey was just a touch slow of thought, and while not blazing fast (like Shea) he was pacey enough.

The thing is, Frank's system requires speedy, dangerous outside mids, and he hasn't had those sorts of players until just last season. He also needs two good holding mids, which he has blown over, and over, and over again. He could have settled the center mid thing a long time ago, but he messed up.

OK, so the questions facing us now are:
    • Can Baca improve in '13 over his performance in '12?
    • Can Croninja maintain his quality of '12?
    • Can we get Dawkins back for '13?
    • Can we keep at least two of Dawkins, Chavez, Shea, and Garza healthy at all times?
    • Can we find more decent defenders?
    • Can our forwards maintain the sort of level they did last season? (I think this is a yes.)
I'd look for another central mid, just in case Baca doesn't get better.
I'd look for more defenders because we are way too thin in defense.
I might look for more outside mids, because I'm just that way.
I think we're OK on forwards with Wondo, Tracy, Flash, Lionheart, and DP. If we can find an upgrade for the same money, then I might go for that, but this is a low priority for me.

    GO QUAKES!!!!

I think Gjoey is a good example of a player making a strong first impression and that is what people remember. He was good at times, not so good at others.

Battery fan here, its the same Jose Cuevas. the info comes from our Front office and players here in Charleston that he was going back to San Jose for a trial in January. We would love to have him back here if he doesn't work out in SJ though! good vision on the ball, always seems to put him self in the right place, good with the ball at his feet and crossing.

he is motivated and a hard worker. Here is a good feature about him in the local paper from early last season.

He was the league Rookie of the Year. The last League Rookie of the Year from the Battery that went to MLS was Osvaldo "Ozzie" Alonso.

does he play wide left or wide right or both?

how good is he at crossing if he only had 2 assists last season?

Wow that's an inspiring story, thanks for sharing it. Working 8 hours a day 6 days a week in the +100 degree heat picking fruit, and then driving to Fresno to train with the Fuego? That's insane. Would love to see him show well and get a roster spot with the Quakes.

he is a great guy too, hard not to root for him to make it. He was a major part of the Battery winning the Championship last year and the selfish side of me would love to see him back!

Well either way, the good news is that he's a paid professional now and doesn't need to work 8 hours a day picking fruit in +100 degrees just to be able to play soccer.

OK, I had better get this list cleaned up before the draft tomorrow. Chavez and Ballouchy now officially counting as domestic players is great! We have not been counting Ballouchy as an INT, but we have for Chavez, so this opens up one INT slot. We now have three open.

Great summary. I don't think you can count Dawkins' 2012 figures to 2013, because in order to land him, we have to buy him outright this year, no? And doesn't the transfer fee and complete salary of Dawkins eat up a lot of your 2013 salary total?

I must be missing something...

There seems to be one INT slot status missing...
3 for the three players on the roster, 2 traded totals 5. What is the status of the 6th?

I could always be in error, but here is my thinking. The six are what we have left of the eight because we traded one to NYRB and one to TFC. We have three players occupying Int slots, so We have three available.

    1. Bernardez
    2. Baca
    3. Dawkins (if he resigns)
    4. Open

Yeah, we really can't know where at for 2013. There are other things like Ramiro's new contract and the new salaries of those who re-signed. I'll probably not update this area again until after the union releases salary figures.

He left middle of last season to pursue a graduate business degree in NY.

Was a ceremony for him at center pitch, as I recall. Seems to have been highly regarded by the players.

(Could be other errors in your list. That one merely jumped out at me.)

Do you think it would be better to have our DP slots and INT slots listed numerically like my list above instead? When I started that section there was one DP, and I'm not even sure INT slots could be traded.

RSL fans think that a couple of years ago they gave one of there's to Chivas USA forever, not just for a set # of seasons.
