Per Mark's suggestion, here is the 2012 version of the Semi-Official Roster Thread. There was some great reporting on our status in this Merc Article.

Looks like there could be a ton of turn over, but in particular Convey and Andre Luiz seem destine to leave.

I'm happy to see that Lenhart wants to stay! I talked to Gordan and Griffin at the SSVCF dinner, and both said they wanted to be here next year too.

I'm also glad to hear Steven Lenhart wants to stay. I'm thinking however, he will demand a little more than $47.4K he was to have made in 2011.

Agreed Falvo. In fact, given the recent report that the entire roster either is a FA or has an option there are a number of players that will demand more cash - Burling, Lionhart, Nana...not to mention the younger players that proved they can play- Beita, Morrow, Ring.

We should be able to meet those raises needs easily and acquire multiple players on top of that. We were 400k under the cap last season. Then you subtract convey's 330k, ALM's 70k, and Sealy's 160k = total of about 960k under the cap to play with.

Plus -- the Quakes FO can't easily claim poverty any more. One of the consequences of their aggressive ticket sales/giveaways was the fact that the last six games were sellouts. Thus, it would be quite difficult for them to say "we need better support from our fans before we can spend on players..."

That is awesome news. Over half the squad should be gone then.... So man many overpaid substitutes on that lists it's pathetic.

Taking performance and overall ability into consideration, here is my view on whether they were worth the money:

    Underpaid
    Rafael Baca # 30 (M) {9/11/89} [32.6K]
    Steve Beitashour #33 (M) {02/01/87} [$42k]
    Chris Wondolowski #8 (F) {1/28/83} [$175K]

    Performed to Contract
    Jon Busch #18 (GK) {8/18/76} [$151.8K]
    Ramiro Corrales #12 (D, M) {3/12/77} [$175.7K]
    Simon Dawkins #10 (M/F) (England, INT) {12/1/87} [$60K]
    David Bingham, #1 (GK) {10/19/89} [Generation Adidas - $99.5K]
    Anthony Ampaipitakwong #23 (M) {6/14/88} [$32.6K]
    Matt Luzunaris #32 (F) {3/6/89} [$32.6K]
    Ellis McLoughlin #25 (F/M) {7/8/90} [$32.6K]
    Justin Morrow #15 (D) {10/04/87} [$42K]
    Brad Ring #5 (M) {04/07/87} [$42K]
    Bobby Burling #2 (D) {10/15/84} [$42k]
    Nana Attakora-Gyan #27 (D) (Canada, INT) {3/27/89} [$45K]
    Khari Stephenson #7 (M) (Jamaica, INT} {1/18/81} [$178.4K]
    Steven Lenhart #24 (F) {8/28/86} [$47.4K]

    Overpaid
    Andrew Weber #13 (GK) {8/9/83} [$65K]
    Jason Hernandez #21 (D) {8/26/83} [$150K]
    Chris Leitch #3 (D) {4/1/79} [$106.1K]
    Tim Ward #20 (D) {2/28/87} [$60.5k]
    Bobby Convey #11 (D, M) {5/27/83} [$336K]
    Sam Cronin #4 (M) {12/12/86} [$111.3K]
Andre Luiz Moreira #28 (M/D) (Brazil, not INT) {11/14/74} [$72K]
    Joey Gjertsen #17 (M/F) {6/13/82} [$83.7K]
    Jacob Peterson #19 (M/F) {1/27/86} [$150.8K]
    Scott Sealy #9 (F) (Trinidad, INT) {6/4/81} [$157K]

    N/A Injured Alan Gordon #16 (F) {10/16/81} [$96.5K]
    N/A Injured Ike Oprara

We have very few players who deserve raises, but we have way too many higher priced players who didn't perform to contract. Jason and Corrales were the only ones I struggled with (could have flipped their positions).

Great point. Plus, I believe that there will be a big push next year to have a good team because they will be building a new stadium for 2013 and will want to drive sales for tickets in the new stadium...

Although I agree with the spirit of this comment, I wonder how the front office defines "sell-out." I know the seats next to me in section 109 were empty for all but three games, and I was able to buy tickets for those seats for friends the day before one of those games. I have a feeling the FO defines it as "pretty much sold out."

On the other hand, there was good attendance to the last few games, even when the team was clearly out of the play-offs. Quakes fans are true fans.

    QuakeAttack,
I beg to differ...Dawkins is not underpaid at $60k? Corrales played to his contract at $175k - seriously??? Morrow and Burling are not worth raises at $42k per year as MLS starters? Lionhart is not worth a raise? Quake time to reevaluate...

From what I heard, the Spurs are paying him a salary too. $60k is just what the Quakes are paying him.

Anybody here know if Simon is currently in the US or has gone back to England to be with the hotspur???? To me, that's a huge distinction: If he's still in the US a couple of weeks after the MLS season ended, I think it bodes well for us being able to retain him. However, if he's back in blighty, I think we can probably fuggedaboudit....

FYI, I just checked the Spurs webpage, and no mention of him except in the 2010/11 transfers section.

Dawkins was hurt for a good part of the year and he was inconsistant both between games and within games. That said, I would have no problem with him receiving more money and having back with the team.

I already mentioned that I struggled with Corrales. However, he played multiple positions during the year and was one of the few players who didn't give up at the end of games. He is the favorite wipping boy of many on BS, but most don't understand his impact to the team and younger players.

Morrow only started towards the end of the year and still has a long way to go. While he is better in attack, he still has postional issues and seemed to tire at the end of games. The second goal against Dallas is prime example.

BB. I guess you weren't at the NY game at Stanford (own goal and red card). He is part of the reason the team gave up so many late goals. He refuses to support his outside back and just stays in the middle. Not a good year. When healthy, Opara should replace him.

Earthquakes Technical Staff Lines Up International Scouting Trips
The Earthquakes’ technical staff is hitting the road for domestic and international scouting trips. Head coach Frank Yallop and general manager John Doyle arrived in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Nov. 2 to scout players during a weeklong tour. As the duo was leaving, assistant coach Ian Russell was arriving from Stockholm, Sweden where he took in Swedish League (Allsvenskan) games and training sessions. Meanwhile, assistant coach Mark Watson has lined up a series of domestic trips through the NCAA College Cup in December to look at the top college prospects in the nation ahead of the Jan. 12 MLS SuperDraft where the Earthquakes hold the No 6 overall pick. More international trips are on tap upon Doyle and Yallop’s return to San Jose as the club continues to search for potential signings.

I'm happy to have us looking in Sweden, because we can afford some of those guys. Brasil is um, over priced. We should be looking in Uruguay, Paraguay (Not a vacation spot that, so no chance we're going there!), Chile, and maybe Ecuador. (There are good players in Ecuador, in spite of Zura.)

I hope our guys looked at many hours of video tapes before they planned these trips too. They should have an idea of who to look at before they go, ya know?

Quake, I think we are on the same page...I actually agree with your comments on Corrales. My problem is that he is paid like one of the best players in the MLS. A pay cut is what he needs. Then he is a keeper as a nice player off the bench. You are correct on Morrow as well, but you must agree he could use a salary bump of some kind. Finally, I was right there with you at Stanford Stadium and you are right again. BB is not perfect and does not have the speed to cover outside, but with the team speed on D that can be covered. He does give the club a solid hard working tough guy that is worth more than $42m. And of course Ike should start when / if he is healthy.

I'm going to chip in with my two cents here because, when did I ever not?

I am actually happy with our striker corps for now. Assuming that we can get them all back, dump Sealy and Griffin, sign a new striker or two to replace Sealy and Griffin, and we're set set. Lenhart is way better than I imagined. Once he and Wondo get some more games together under their belts, we could have a serious offense. Also, Gordon and Ellis are reasonable backups for Lenhart and Wondo.

Where we need help is outside mid. Dawkins was starting to look good at left mid, and probably he can make that spot his. Then we need a right mid. I don't think that either Baca or Ampai can be good enough there. We need a serious right mid. Gjoey and Peterson, even at their best, do not seem likely candidates. This is where I would spend serious money.

I don't Corrales on the team even at a reduced salary. He's way too slow, he makes too many late tackles, his passing is still terrible, and he has never learned how to shoot. Make him a coach, or a scout, or something other than a player.

Morrow and Beta to start on the outside defender spots, BUT!! we need backups for both of them. Ward and Leitch both to be cut as soon as we have serviceable replacements.

Burling is one of our better defenders, albeit he's slow. So ideally, we play:

    Morrow - - - Ike - - - Burling - - - Beta

across the backline. That gives us three speedy defenders and one big strong tough guy.

And raises for the young guys.

Cut these guys no matter what: Corrales, Sealy, Griffin.
Cut these guys as soon as we have a decent replacement: Leitch, Ward.
If Ike can come back and looks like he's healthy, then we can ditch Jason. Jason's a great guy, but he's not that great a defender.

    GOOOOOOO QUAAAAAAAKES!!!!!! :(

So it's been a big week, even if most are considering the stadium suites to be the biggest pick-up.

    Trades:
Convey to KC for an INT slot in the 2012 season.
Jean Alexandre from RSL for our 2012 1st round supplementary draft pick.
Shea Salinas from Vancouver for allocation money.

We are currently in the blackout period of the re-entry draft. We will see what happens to Leitch, Andre Luiz, Peterson, Sealy & Weber on the 5th. I will put an asterisk in front of each of these players.

    Thanks for keeping this up!

Of Leitch, Andre Luiz, Peterson, Sealy, & Weber, the only one that I really want back is Weber. If we keep Peterson, I'm OK with that. Andre Luiz is done, which is too bad, but if he works for us in some other capacity, that would be great. For that matter, I'd be happy to see any of these guys become scouts for us. Sealy is from the Caribbean, and Frank and JD love those Caribbean players, so he might do very well as a scout for us (and no doubt other teams as well).

I know I'm over anxious, but I want to hear that we are signing a couple of really serious players. We may have to wait until after the first of the year for that news, but that's what I'm looking for.

    GOOOOOO QUAAAAAAAKES!!!!!! :(
    FIRE FRANK!!
