Sebastian is 14 years old and is playing at age group with USMNT U15s, albeit in the younger half of the year. Charles Renken is 15 months younger (although I think taller) than Sebastian, and is playing up for USMNT U15s.

Update on Sebastien from the Santa Clara Sporting site:
    http://www.santaclarasporting.com/news.html#state2

"Sebastian Lleget, a key midfielder who was gone during the tournament competing for the US National Team and training at West Ham United. "

This was during the April time frame. Not a lot of news, but there it is.

Sebastian is went to west ham over the summer for a couple weeks to train with them. He started with their u-16 team and did very well, so he was moved up to the u-18 team for games/training. he is too young to go over permanently right now, currently but plans to go when he is 16.

Thanks for the update. Is he going to stay at the Bradenton Academy until he is old enough to join West Ham?

He is going to stay in CA with Sporting until he turns 16. When he turns 16 he will go to England to live there and will be plced on the approprite team at that time.

Re: 13 Year Old Yank gets West Ham Trial

both the Fire and NYRB have academies now....

in fact the NYRB academy sent a U17 team to spain this summer where they played U17 teams from Sevilla, Juventus and another spain team..... they tied the other spain team and Juvetus both 2-2 and lost to sevilla 2-1.... apparently they turned some heads over there and coaches from all sides were impressed.....

these academies are free to their players (completely free) all costs are picked up by the owners.... this is to encourage growth in urban areas... these academies play respected big clubs in their area not to mention they play against the U16/U17 USMN teams.... these academies are not the youth development programs in the mls.... each MLS team have youth sides and reserve sides.... but as far as academies go, i think the Fire and NY are the only MLS sides with one

Re: 13 Year Old Yank gets West Ham Trial

the guy who posted it on myspace didnt provide a link but a copied/paste... ill see if he can get me a link but for now heres the post and the 3rd team was Partizan Belgarde, not some other spanish team

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Red Bulls U-16 squad visits Spain
U-16 have once in a lifetime experience in Spain

Known as one of the elite academies in the United States, the Red Bulls U-16 squad had a chance of the lifetime over the past couple of weeks, as they traveled to Spain to compete in the Under-17 Copa Quixote.

With a number of top clubs in the world represented in the tournament including Juventus (Italy), FC Barcelona (Spain) and PSV Eindhoven (Holland), the competition provided an invaluable experience for the players and coaches involved. The Copa Quixote consisted of 16 teams and over 350 players from a variety of backgrounds.

The Red Bulls were placed in a group with Partizan Belgrade (Serbia), Juventus and Sevilla (Spain) - a challenging set of opponents. However, the Red Bulls represented their club well.

"This is the type of environment our players at home need to experience earlier and often," said Red Bulls U-16 head coach Stan Lembryk. "We gained a lot of respect or our organization and the league against some of the worlds most recognizable clubs. We were the surprise of the tournament."

The U-16s first took on Partizan Belgarde, where they played to a 2-2 draw. New York opened the scoring in the 18th minute when Dylan Mencia sent Cesar Blacido through with a well-weighted ball before Blacido blasted it into the upper 90. The Serbian side was able to equalize in the 35th minute but in the 44th minute, the Red Bulls took the lead for the second time in the game.

Walter Hines was able to slip a pass behind the defense to the speedy Chris Agorsor, who neatly slotted it past the Partizan goalkeeper to give the Red Bulls the lead. However, Partizan leveled the match again and both teams earned a point after a forward was able to hit in a cross from the wing.

In the Red Bulls' second match, they took on Juventus in a game that also ended in a 2-2 tie. The Red Bulls got on the scoresheet first once again when Blacido played a perfectly timed ball behind the defense and in Agorsor's path and the attacker made no mistake, putting it in for his second goal of the tournament.

Juventus countered by scoring their own goal in the 31st minute, but seven minutes later, the Red Bulls went ahead against when J.J. Raley's free kick found the head of Sacir Hot, who nodded it into the back of the net.

With a chance to advance to the knockout stages, the Red Bulls' final match was against Sevilla. In a very hard-fought battle, the Red Bulls took the lead 18 minutes in after Agorsor was taken down in the box. Captain Dragan Naumoski stepped up and converted the spot kick to give the U-16s the lead. Sevilla would tie the game up in the 40th minute, leading to a dramatic conclusion. The Red Bulls had a number of chances to go ahead in the second half. Joey Spivack was close when he took a shot that deflected off the goalkeeper's foot. In a one-on-one situation, Hines was able to get to the goalkeeper, but he could not finish the chance off. And Cesar Blacido was inches away as well, when his header glanced just past the back post. Sevilla was able to put one of their chances away in the second half, giving them a 2-1 win.

Despite finishing in third place in the group, the U-16s were pleased with their performance.

"We can away with many positives and a wonderful experience that will surely help our players in the future," Lembryk said. "We scored in each of our games and we were the only team to take points off the group winner, Partizan Belgrade. We hope to have more opportunities to play at this level and continue to help develop our home grown players."

While in Spain, the U-16s were able to also get a match in where they won, 3-0, against local team Miguelturra. Hennie Bosman, Spivack and Oscar Gonzalez were the scorers while goalkeeper Travis Ives earned the shutout.

"I would especially like to thank MLS and Alfonso Mondelo, the Red Bulls, Mundalito U-17, and my staff Assistant Coach Antonio Meza, Equipment Manager Fernando Ruiz, and Athletic Trainer Veronica Pagel," Lembryk said.

Agosor is the kid from Baltimore (other thread here) right? He got a lot of goals + mentions there...

Sorry, I just find it stupid nowadays when European teams are 'surprised' that the US is good at the U-16 and below level. That hasn't been an issue for us in years. Its the 15-20 year level in which we not hitting the mark....

    This whole thread.
We all get a little excited when we hear of talent at a young age either in our club or national systems, but.....
Let's just calm down a bit.
Talent at 13 is a notoriously poor indicator of the way a player will turn out at 23.
You see so many youth and schoolboy international games and big youth cup games where there appears to be so many good players on the pitch. Five years later many of those kids are playing in the lower divisions or have dropped out of the paid ranks altogether.
Of course the opposite happens as well. In recent years in my own country players like Stuart Pearce, Ian Wright, Chris Waddle and others were playing amateur or semi pro soccer in their late teens and early twenties, then their potential was realised as they matured.

depends on how you look at it... some guys are prodigies at that age... and some just rely on size and athleticism that does not transcend age... if Lleget has the skills he will be fine

Not necessarily. There's an issue in the sports news over here at the moment about our top ranked junior female and second ranked junior male tennis players. It appears they've had LTA funding withdrawn from them because they've been caught drunk partying hard when they should have been working on their games.
Now, there's no doubt these kids are hugely talented "we produce good juniors it's just the seniors we have trouble with" or they wouldn't be so highly ranked. But unless they apply themselves more professionally PDQ less talented kids with a better work ethic will be the British number one tennis players of the future.

I get you.. I wasn't accounting for the outside fluff... u are right there... im looking strictly at on the field performance... if he is as intelligent and skillful as they say, he should be able to be a good pro...

Sebastian defenatly doesnt rely on size or speed. He is only about 5'8(which is a little above average for our team) and isnt even in the top 4-5 on our team when it comes to speed. And as for off the field, he knows how to joke around and have fun, but he is super focused on soccer and wouldn't let anything get in the way of it. And just an fyi, he's 15 now not 13.

But you cite no evidence one way or the other at all!

Here's another question you can't answer using no data: why do some London clubs have successful youth development programs while others don't? If it's so much easier for London clubs, then why have only some been successful. And I'm pretty sure that some of the northern clubs have done great at developing youth talent. ManU has been no slouch at this, for one.

Thought he was already in WHU's academy- explains why he didn't play in the Nike Friendlies with the U-17s earlier this month.

Someone on the Youth National Team forum said he wasn't with West Ham anymore. This is so damn confusing. Dave Marino, can you sort this out? :)
