Thanks for another great YA write-up, Brian. (Although that is one dandy of a photo that the club provided.) Interesting that he captained his U-16 England team. Seems pretty obvious he should be called in. Our back line has some deferred maintenance coming due.
What would make you think that? Rongen apparently had huge lists of guys with potential to play for the US before he left his position (or was he fired, I don't remember) with the U-20s. I'm pretty sure that if we can figure out about him, Klinsmann can do it to.
Another interview with Seb Hines talking about playing for the United States http://www.americansoccernow.com/articles/seb-hines-hopes-for-a-chance-with-the-usmnt
Ok, so to re-cap his status and eligibility: 1) A born dual British-American citizen with a valid US passport in hand. 2) Has represented England U-19s and would need to file a one-time switch of affiliation to be eligible to accept a call-up from Klinsmann. Correct? We could have him in time for Honduras or at least Costa Rica/Mexico in March if Klinsmann were in a hurry to bring him over.
I wonder if Hines would interested in playing in the Gold Cup this upcoming summer. I'd think that would be his best chance.
I'm sure he would. It sounds like he really wants to play for USA, and really wants Jurgen to ask him to switch.
Can he just apply for the one-time switch or does US soccer have to say "we want him" or something like that?
He can apply on his own I would imagine. It's his choice and not the U.S. federation's. His only reason for not doing so atm has to be that he doesn't want to limit himself only to The U.S., just in case they don't come calling.
I think it's more that Seb knows he has no chance to play for England while he looks at the US CB pool and sees a chance.
Don't get me wrong, I know the U.S. is realistically his only option. But why would he file without being asked? He'd be limiting himself without reason was my point. I understand why he's being so forthcoming with his "desire". I also understand why he's not filing prior to being asked to represent the U.S.
Well, one thing is being asked to try out for the team, another is to represent the country in a game.
So basically, Seb Hines took a look at our Central defense in the last few games, licked his chops and said "Well, shiat, I can totally play in a World Cup.". For both Mr. Hines and the USA, both parties practically have everything to gain and virtually nothing to lose.
As long as JK is very clear that there are no guarantees, and JK rates him, then no...nothing to lose.
God, our CB pool is painful. The prospects are more encouraging, but we havent seen them yet. Our 2nd and 3rd options are playing for relegation fodder in Denamrk and the Spanish Second Division FFS I would take all American CB's in the Championship over Goodson. Whitbread, Spector and Hines are all improvements. We need to see 7-9 CB's in addition to Cam/Boca to even figure out our depth chart. It's all still hypothetical...and its almost 2013. And Boca....I feel an Ol' Yeller scenario coming. It will be sad.
The problem is that Brooks is looking like he could be the answer. Still early but very promising. Why is this a problem? Zee Germans have noticed.
Yeah. I've been hesitant to include Brooks in my CB scenarios because it sounds like he might end up going with Germany after all.
From what I've heard, Brooks would prefer to go to the US...but a decision needs to be made soon by USSoccer. The German U20 team is not as serious as it sounds compared to the U21 and U23 squads. A reasonable timetable would be him in the U20 World Cup and then, depending, with the senior squad possibly late 2013/early 2014 in the run up to the WC
