Well instead of doing game threads, thought it would just be better to do a season long thread. So far outside of the PR match. The Scorpions have been solid. Have won both from the Rowdies. (take that Mob Squad ) Was at the game against the Strikers. The rematch should be good. Wonder who will be the rival of the Scorpions? I know in the stands PR probably had the largest following there, helps that San Antonio has a ton of PR fans there. But so far the team I want to beat is the Strikers, despite the great finish, it was a very chippy game and looking forward to the retmatch to see if the chippiness is still there. Looking forward to the Eddies match this weekend. Will be disappointed with anything, but a win against the Eddies.
Let's see how my other team in Texas fairs tonight! It sucks I couldn't attend opening day cause of a road trip to Chicago for the Dynamo, but hopefully the Scorpions win and I get to see them against my Dynamo. I'm hoping the Scorpions do well against Edmonton today. If the Scorpions win, they'll be doing an amazing job for a new team. Let's just hope that they keep on playing competitive soccer.
Well the Eddies put up a good fight, but the Scorpions were able to pull out the win. The Scorpions were not as aggressive or as smooth without Hans, who was out with a minor groin injury. Getting the 2-0 win was good and should be intereting to see how they turn around against the Larado Heat on Tuesday. And if they can win they get to face the Dynamo!!
Hans was seriously gassed at the end of the match vs the Dynamo. I'm concerned about these guys in the heat going forward. All the players we have that are used to more temperate climes are going to suffer as daily temps climb to three digits. Particularly against the established clubs that deal with the heat at home (FtL, Atl, PR, TB, and maybe Car?). I did love how the guys left it all on the pitch last night. The spirit is willing. Any word on Sattler? He stopped taking his goal kicks by the end of the match. Is he alright? I wish NASL was better about communicating injuries.
It looked as if the whole team was trying to slow the pace of the match toward the end. Not taking goal kicks and just making normal passes reduces the risk for a change in possession. I never saw a point at which he would have been injured. I saw video of him after the match running over to the casuals and jumping around with them and them surrounding him and such. I don't believe him to be injured, but I could be wrong.
I really like Blake Wagner's play. He rarely gets beat in defense and almost always finds a Scorpion with his passes. I've also been pleased with the work Campos is turning in as a target man. He is suddenly able to actually keep possession of balls sent his way and then hold off defenders while his teammates join the attack.
Saturday's win was such a breath of fresh air. Personally, I was getting really tired of Campos. His possession has been atrocious. His first touch was awful. I HOPE Saturday helped him turn that corner. Two great goals and some really good touches. This is the striker I want to see. I can't be more impressed with Kevin Harmse in his Center Mid position and in his role of Captain. He is playing so well right now. It's a thing of beauty to watch his vision and passing. It was nice to see him even get a nice shot in on goal Saturday as well. I appreciate a vocal captain, even if it means a foul, or card every now and again. I'm sure it makes his team confident in him as well. I thought Wes Knight did a great job yet again, as Hankinson moved him (again) to Right Back. The guy is versatile, there's no doubt about that. I liked our move to a 4-3-3 this week. I think the defense and midfield have established themselves enough to warrant an extra attacker. Esteban Bayona did very well playing forward, and had that very nice assist to Walter Ramirez. Defensively, Greg Janicki coming back from injury is huge. He has played full 90 of every game since coming back from injury. With he, Cochrane, Knight (sometimes) Pitchkolan, Kling, etc, our back line looks very strong and capable. I liked the way Luiz Tiago looked in his 10 mins of play. He is small, but he's quick and his motor doesn't quit. I think he understands he doesn't have the luxury of alot of minutes to impress the coaches on a team with good midfielders, so he definietly made the most of his 10 minutes. There's my $0.02
good shot of the 3rd kit ... I'm usually not a fan of purple but as the secondary color with this grey I actually like it.
I see they have embraced the worldwide custom of having a third uni that has absolutely no connection to the team colors. Also interesting to see it has a shirt sponsor where the other two don't. I love what the Scorpions have done so far this year, but their kits are bland.
Erm, Purple is a recurring theme with Morgan's Wonderland (the logo that is on the kit). The "sponsor" is the theme park built by the owner. Their 3rd kit is very much connected. The more you know ...
Forgive me for my ignorance...I searched the team's official website and couldn't find any news release on the third kit. Purple is not a team color, seems to me if it was so important it would have been incorporated into the color scheme. Having the themepark as their 'sponsor' is indeed nice. My recommendation would be to ditch one of their bland first or second kit and have a nice all purple option instead.
They'd already chosen the colors as seen on the logo: The Morgan's Wonderland Logo: There's the answer to the purple. Hartman knows that he's already pushing the line of "soccer for a cause" and the whole spiel. Having the club have a separate identity is actually pretty important. That's why there's a completely different color scheme and the theme park/color was incorporated as a 3rd kit.
I may be in the minority, but I think the 2 "regular" kits are very bland and boring. I was happy to see something different. I really hope the team steps up next season with a better kit design. I'm not being a downer; the kit being lackluster doesn't make me like the Scorpions any less, just to clarify...
Oh, I agree ... it was a bit 'bleh' to say the least. If this weren't the first season I'd actually gig 'em for it, but being the first season and I'm enjoying the fact we have a team, they get a pass for this one.
My thoughts exactly. I would be completely ok with all jerseys having the Morgan's Wonderland logo on them, if for no other reason than it looks more legit. I heard rumblings a while back from a Scorpions person that they were trying to work out a deal with Rackspace to be kit sponsor. I'd bet next season will feature Rackspace as kit sponsor.
Yep, that's why I was so excited when the team announced a third kit a few months ago. I figured it would be a new design with the same color scheme, and add a sponsor. But as previously stated, I'm just glad to have pro soccer in SA.
I like the purple and gray together, but maybe not on that particular model of jersey. I might prefer grey-grey-purple, or to have continuity with main club colors, grey-black-purple, more minimal piping on the grey shirts. Sponsor logo vs. team name on front is an age-long debate. Nobody is wrong. But I do prefer a sponsor logo. It's just what I grew up with in soccer. Good "sponsor" to have.
Anyone have an idea of contract situations for us next season? I can't see us retaining everyone becuase of the nature of lower division player flow, see 2011 Carolina Railhawks-->2012 Railhawks. I'm sure some of the younger players will be staying on, but we do have some bright spots. Does anyone know anything about contract lengths with our current squad? I'm sure Hartman's pockets are deep enough to bring guys back if we continue to play well. And maybe the allure of growth, stadium, MLS hope will attract some to stay with the club.
We can scratch that first part now. SA goes to Puerto Rico and knocks off the first place Islanders 2-0 to take over sole possession of first in the NASL !!!!!!
Another good win last night. Bayona continues to play at a great level. It's awesome to see this team evolve from what they looked like from the first few games, 4-4-2 with 1 real attacking option, to a more 4-3-1-2/4-3-2-1/4-3-3 with tons of attacking options. I really like what Hankinson as done here; he's doing a fantastic job. Our bench/reserves have worked very hard and when they come on it's fresh legs and more pressure, notably Josue Soto and Matt Gold. Here's to continuing our run and bringing home some silverware!
