Jozy Altidore invented gravity, but he didn't tell anybody and left it there to be discovered. He then scored 2 goals for AlkmaAr that evening.

I feel like AZ (ah-zed kinda sounds like "I said") pun is being underutilized.

The best pun I could come up with on "Ah Zed" was "AZ really been 3 years: Jozy in Europe continues."

Needless to say, it is not very good.

Bite my AZ: Jozy is scoring again, in Holland.

It's an offsides trap! Sorry, I see AZ Alkmaar and I think about Admiral Ackbar.

Agree for the most part. I think the mouth-breathing Football/Basketball/Baseball execs at ESPN thought - "His name is Leander Schaerleckens. With a name like that he has to know about soccer."

I'm changing my name to Yogi Unterhintenskampf. Maybe ESPN will hire me as their German soccer expert.

Haha. "Could use as a stepping stone to the EPL in a few years time". This is the stage in his career when he should be "stepping up" to a bigger league, not in 3 years time when he has hit his prime and has done all of his developing in lower leagues. Especially considering that the SPL is no longer a feeder league for the EPL, seeing how most players that play there are shit. It is a two horse race where neither horse is particularly fast.
