Internacional fans, your team played a tough match yesterday. A few remarks.

Leaving all rivalry or biases aside and examining this strictly from a futebol perspective, I think Internacional is at a crossroads. On one hand you have outstanding players who can easily form the backbone of a title contender. On the other you have these guys who have a lot of quilometragem and who put their hearts out there but who didn't deliver yet again.

Might this be a good time to start a rebuilding process? Your team's management staff did well in bringing solid reinforcements like Bolatti in 2011 and D'atolo in 2012. You have Leandro Damião and Dagoberto, strong midfielders in Guiñazú and Sandro Silva. You have a great playmaker in D'Alessandro. And, although I'm opposed to this, you have Oscar. But you also have some veterans who have been there a considerable period of time. The back line has been around since the 2010 FIFA Club World Cup. Perhaps Indio, Renan, Bolivar, and Nei have run their course, however useful they've been to your team

I was stunned last year when you guys lost against Peñarol after dominating them so thoroughly in the first half. You were the defending champions - you were at a good moment. And this year your team was visibly inferior - the defeat against Juan Aurich was a warning sign. On paper, Internacional had the means to go all the way. You rightfully earned a berth against Once Caldas. But once the games began, your only two convincing performances in the group stage were the beatdown on The Strongest (a team which has always lost in Brazil) and the draw against Santos in your stadium.

All teams go through cycles. The Parmalat Palmeiras had its heyday. SPFC had its run in the early 1990s. Even the current Santos generation will grow older; they may bring Robinho next year, and keep Neymar and Ganso and do some serious damage for some more time. But eventually Santos will stop being the dominating side it is. Every team in every sport must eventually rebuild. And perhaps that time has come for your team.
