Notre Dame, Big East reach deal; Irish to join ACC in July Notre Dame and the Big East reached an agreement Tuesday morning that allows the Irish to leave the league on July 1, 2013. This paves the way for their expedited move to the Atlantic Coast Conference, where they will begin competing this fall. "Notre Dame now looks forward with great anticipation to becoming a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference," Notre Dame vice president and director of athletics Jack Swarbrick said in a statement. "We are thrilled to join a great group of institutions who share our commitment to the integration of athletics into the academic mission of the university. Our coaches and student-athletes across our athletic programs are truly excited about the new challenges ahead." http://www.usatoday.com/story/sport...reach-deal-irish-to-join-acc-in-july/1981427/ http://espn.go.com/college-sports/s...irish-exit-2-years-early-join-acc-source-says http://www.cbssports.com/collegebas...ort-notre-dame-fleeing-to-acc-for-next-season http://www.huffingtonpost.com/huff-wires/20130312/acc-notre-dame/?utm_hp_ref=homepage&ir=homepage
Notre Dame is coming to the ACC early; football arrangement still won't start until 2014 Notre Dame will become an official partial member of the ACC on July 1 this year after coming to an agreement to leave the fractured Big East. The decision was described by the league as "amicable." That means the ACC will welcome Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Notre Dame this year, making it a 15-team league for most sports. ACC commissioner John Swofford released this statement about today's news: “Our conference, schools and fans are delighted that Notre Dame will join the ACC on July 1, 2013. The addition of Notre Dame, Pitt and Syracuse, followed by Louisville in 2014, positions us extremely well with an outstanding collection of 15 member institutions. “As was previously announced, our annual five games against Notre Dame in football will begin with the 2014 season. This not only will enhance our league’s already ambitious football schedules but also will provide terrific fan excitement. http://hamptonroads.com/2013/03/not...tball-arrangement-still-wont-start-until-2014
It's Official! New Big East adds three, seals deal with Fox The "Catholic 7" has grown to the Catholic 10. And Wednesday, they took a major step toward officially becoming the Big East. As expected, the seven non-football schools that announced a breakaway from the Big East in December officially added Xavier, Butler and Creighton, and celebrated a new media rights deal with Fox during a news conference at News Corp.'s headquarters in New York. The league, which will keep the Big East name after a negotiation with the football schools, begins play with a 10-team lineup in 2013-14. The league is expected to grow to 12, perhaps as early as 2014-15. The league also will continue to call Madison Square Garden in New York the home for its men's basketball tournament. http://www.usatoday.com/story/sport...r-butler-creighton-signs-tv-contract/2002227/

Marquette AD Larry Williams: Big East aiming to have commissioner within six weeks Besides the search for a commissioner, Williams mentioned other aspects of the reinvention and rebranding of the new Big East: ♦ Big East Conference offices currently are located in Providence, R.I. Some of that staff will come over to the new Big East. But Williams said the long-term, permanent location of the league office will be another city, perhaps New York. Other cities – Philadelphia, Washington, D.C. – are possibilities. Chicago will get some consideration. The new commissioner will have a say in where the permanent office is located. "From a practicality standpoint, we just need it in a location that’s easily accessed by airports and trains," Williams said. "New York makes some sense relative to its ease of entry. But it’s expensive. So we are thinking do you just have kind of a beach head in New York. But the reality is so much work can get done in New York." ♦ Getting referees in place for the men’s basketball season is a high priority. ♦ The conference schedule in men’s basketball likely will be a round robin, giving each team 18 conference games. ♦ Williams said discussions between Fox Sports and the new league continue about what regular nights, if any, are the ideal ones to play games. ♦ The presidents of the new league have adopted a set of bylaws "just a few days ago, and we are comfortable with those." http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/202758081.html
How The New Big East Coaches Stack Up we inch closer and closer to the commencement of the revamped Big East, now is a good time to take a look at the names and stats of those who will coach the ten teams of this “new” conference. Keep in perspective that from the 2012-13 to 2013-14 school years, the Big East will lose basketball coaches that accounted for well over 2,600 career wins including a Hall of Famer (Jim Boeheim) and a Hall of Famer-to-be (Rick Pitino). Losing those two coaches alone tremendously impacts the credibility of the conference in the short term, but do not be fooled; there is PLENTY of coaching talent that have proved to make deep runs in the NCAAs. There is, however, a name or two with a seat too warm for comfort. Take a look at the table below (all info provided by sports-reference.com) and the observations that follow it. http://playforthegarden.com/2013/05/15/how-the-big-east-coaches-stack-up/
