And at this point, I will invite folks to drop the discussion about stadium construction possibilities and probabilities in this thread. Thanks in advance. Pac-12 football, though, is apparently totally related.
Sorry I pushed things off course haha. But if San Jose wins the SS, is there a back-up for Stanford? Because there's still a chance you contend with the Pac-12 title that same weekend (although I realize the chances are minute given the Cardinal play at Oregon and Washington, I'd like to know).
Assuming the Quakes win the SS and maked it through to the Cup final (and those are big assumptions), I would love to see the final at Buck Shaw. After all the hoopla about SSS, I'd love to see the league spin a final at BS.
Where's that thread on the Mehdi Ballouchy trade to remind us all why this is so unlikely a scenario?
God I hope they don't consider Pac Bell as a Stanford backup. That game this spring was horrible as the stadium does not lend itself well to football or soccer. Plus the Quakes have a history of not winning when they play in San Francisco.
If Candlestick really is the backup, then I can stop rooting against the Earthquakes for the rest of this season. (I know that sounds selfish, but the prospect of an MLS Cup final in their tiny shoebox of a stadium does not excite me...)
No, not generally. I am completely neutral on MLS teams. I just think it would be kind of embarrassing for an MLS Cup Final to take place in a facility like Buck Shaw.* As soon as they get their new stadium I'll go back to wanting the best team to win all the time, including the Quakes. *Yes, I'm aware that's selfish, as I won't be attending either way.
Not sure what made you think the MLS final would be played at Buck Shaw. They've been saying for months under no circumstances will the final be played at Buck Shaw. First choice is Stanford, second choice is either Candlestick or AT&T Park depending on availability. The Oakland Coliseum is not available since there is a game scheduled 18 hours after the MLS Cup.
Stanford, I imagine, is the best option, gorgeus re-model, looks like a great place for soccer. it wont matter though, this is the Sounders year.
Who has been saying that for months? Link? Don Garber said it would be at Buck Shaw when asked at the Supporters Summit last year about the possibility, though he hemmed and hawed about it a few minutes later. About the same time I heard from a reliable source that Buck Shaw was the only option, as renting a football stadium on short notice during football season wasn't considered possible. That's when I changed the location in my profile here. Maybe something has changed, but since then I haven't heard anybody official say anything about it at all, let alone be repeating it for months. Source?
I believe it was Dave Kaval who said it last month or the month before. I'll see if I can find the exact quote for you.
I'd rather have the game (for the players and quality of play) held at Buck Shaw as the (Bill Walsh) Stanford field is just way to narrow for soccer. On the other hand, it was a pretty cool to see and be among the 50k fans that beat the Gals there in June.....
I would rather we not talk about this until it actually happens. One poor performance or unlucky deflection in the playoffs and we take a seat in the losers lounge. Remember what happened in 2005.
Hahaha! Now instead of moving to Houston, we are moving from Santa Clara to San Jose.....a block away! Nancy Thomas , who loves baby?
