Montreal VP:
Stade Saputo will be ready for June 16 debut

MONTREAL – Montreal Impact vice president Richard Legendre made it very clear to the local press on Thursday: Newly renovated Stade Saputo will be open for business when the Impact host the Seattle Sounders on June 16.

“It’s progressing quickly, and we need it to progress quickly,” Legendre told reporters. “More than 50 percent of the work is now done. Stands are popping up fast, and we’ll be going at full blast until June 16. We’re working exclusively on that scenario – that we’re playing on June 16."

Is the upcoming meeting next month with the San José City Council regarding the adjacent community soccer fields the actual (and perhaps final) holdup toward finally breaking ground for The Epicenter?

Finally, the final approval of the community soccer fields that would slot in adjacent to our current training facility and the site of our new stadium is expected to be scheduled in June in front of the San Jose City Council. Once I get the exact date, I will communicate that information to our fans and community stakeholders. The Quakes were selected as part of an RFP process to manage the complex. That agreement with the city along with the contractor and final land agreement will be the subject of the meeting. We would appreciate folks supporting the project and attending the meeting in mid-June.

The community soccer fields will enhance the overall stadium complex and provide a boost to the quality of life for residents of the Silicon Valley. We are thrilled that the city has shown the foresight to fund and construct these fields. It will be an amazing community asset for generations to come. Imagine the prospect of seeing a kid grow up playing his soccer on the community fields and eventually making it to the big show next door in our new stadium. These fields are a great opportunity to grow the soccer community and I know I can count on our fans and stakeholders to attend the meeting and show support for the project.

Which means that The Epicenter will likely open no earlier than Opening Day 2014.

As for BBVA Compass Stadium's opener (this was the first Houston Dynamo game I ever watched that didn't also involve the San Jose Earthquakes), Good God did Dominic Kinnear's decision to keep the between-the-lines playing field width at only 70 yards (which was confirmed by the TV announcers), despite the new stadium there being able to easily accommodate a 75 yard width, make the game disgustingly tough to watch! It was only slightly easier to watch than a game at Jeld-Wen Field because at least BBVA's field is natural grass.

I remember when the post-Golden Age began, there were heated debates here on whether it would've been better to have Frank Yallop or Dominic Kinnear as our current head coach and there were good points made for both of them. However, at this point I'm so glad that we have Yallop rather than Kinnear considering that Yallop thankfully eventually widened and lengthened our home playing field to the near-ideal 74x115 yards while Kinnear still kept his playing field at 70 yards wide and 110(?) yards long despite no longer being physically constrained to do so.

I made sure that I gave the Anschutz cronies (Phil himself and his leading devil Lewienke) hell when they were introduced. It really made me excited for when we get our Stadium.
