"As they prepare for their final two matches, the San Diego Flash Soccer Club are looking to the short- and long-term future. After a decisive 8-0 win over the Phoenix Monsoonon Saturday that clinched the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) West-Southern Conference title, the Flash have their sights set on the NPSL championships to be hosting in San Diego at the end of July. Beyond that, the team has sent an expression of interest to the North American Soccer League (NASL) as a preliminary to possibly joining the league."

If it works out, I'd miss the SD Derby. I guess depending on how USL expansion goes, they could both go pro. Of course, it's a matter of getting the money (and attendance) so we shall see.

Clent Alexander just posted that he is meeting today with Downs regarding the Flash joining NASL at some time in the future. They obviously got a quick response to their letter they sent him the other day.

It could be an interesting market. I wonder if they'll be able to get some people from going to Tijuana games. That's always been my biggest worry with putting a team in San Diego.

Mine as well. At first it seemed odd that Club Tijuana would make any inroads beyond the obvious transplants and cross border crowd. But after going to the Tijuana game on Saturday and reading this article I'm not so sure. I mean on Saturday I easily saw more non-Mexican and non-Mexican-American fans at an all Mexican fixture than I've ever seen previously. I'm starting to think Club Tijuana's efforts to attract "Anglo" fans as they call them are starting to pay off some, albeit slowly.

The sooner the Flash or anyone can start establishing themselves the better. Not saying I think Tijuana could ever "ruin" the market for an actual San Diego based team as SD is big and TJ is obviously south of the entire city and a place many in SD still refuse to go. But they could potentially diminish the overall market a bit.

An annual friendly between the Xolos and the San Diego franchise sure would be cool.

It would be very cool. I'd much rather see a D2 SD team play the Xolos in say the March edition of the San Diego Clasico than the Galaxy or Chivas USA.

Even if the Flash don't move up I'd like to see something like this happen. Though maybe more as a double billing kind of thing. Say as the opening game for something like the San Diego Clasico have the SD Flash and SD Boca FC for instance, play a prelim game before the Xolos play (I say Xolos because they've been featured in the last 3 editions of the SD Clasico).

I know that the Flash or Boca had an exhibition match against the Xolos (2010 or 2011) but it ended up being their U-20 (reserve) team.

That and I don't think that game was open to the public.

The Xolos have played the Flash 3 times. The two first team squads played at Kinsell field during the Ascenso playoffs in the Xolos bye week (november 2010) that they got for finishing in first place. The first team played the first half and there were wholesale changes for the second half. Xolos won 5-0. The game wasn't advertised but maybe 400 people showed up to watch

They played at Estadio Caliente behind closed doors in August of 2011. I believe the Flash won against the u-20 squad 2-1 but I may be wrong on the score.

They also played the pre-game of the Xolos v Atlante pre-season game, tied 1-1 (again against the u-20 squad plus a bunch of trialists) in Dec 2011. Game finished in front of about 11,000. Flash stayed to watched the first team play in front of a full house of 22,000.

Good to know. Still hope they'll do something similar to the Atlante game up here in SD.

Is it open to the public?

Also interesting article in Soccer Newsday about the Flash's NASL interest. Though I suspect they jump to a few premature conclusions. But of interest in the article is that the Flash have been talking with NASL more than just this week but rather periodically over the last few years.

Haven't heard anything else from twitter or the Flash facebook page. Sucks cause I'd like to know and try and make it.

Would have liked to have heard sooner

I noticed that as well. But of course, "anything is possible." It was a pretty comprehensive article, but unfortunately at this early stage, anything so comprehensive is going to be largely (if not mostly) speculative.

where are these teams going to play?

for NASL to be taken seriously it's teams are going to need their own SSS.

San Diego Flash play at Del Norte High School. The LA Blues play at Cal St Fullerton.

they don't have to be MLS quality SSS. But for a team to get a following their has to be some kind of atmosphere at the game. SSS with roofs that can hold 5k would be a good start.

USD has been mentioned for Flash, then there's the possibility of a downtown (or Chula Vista) football stadium (it comes up every year or so) leaving an empty pit where the Q is... Also, SDSU could stand to put in a few more bleachers at their soccer field.

The NASL San Diego project is very exploratory at this point... Flash submitted their letter of interest. Then they met with Downs. Then Flash said "yeah, uhm... we'll see." So there's time to find a place lol

I hope that they make the jump. It would be great if the team was able to keep its friendly relationship with the Xolos too. I think that a regular set of friendlies with a Primera Division team would be good for the league image and for the local fanbase.

Not to mention a roof is an added expense that is kind of worthless in San Diego other than for sound purposes. It rains so infrequently here it's just not needed. I mean hell the Padres are so confident it doesn't rain they've moved their tarp under the grandstands where you can't see it (I think they're the only team in MLB to do so).
