Figure someone had to start a thread like this. I wonder who SLC will go after in the Superdraft? Anyway, I have been reading up on some possibles for the upcoming MLS Superdraft and I thought I would throw out some college player names and see if there were any bites. My first two are: Chris Karcz, Rutgers http://www.scarletknights.com/soccer-men/news/gamepr.asp?prID=2074 Justin Cook, Ohio State (also played on PDL National Champ team, Central FL Kraze) http://ohiostatebuckeyes.collegesports.com/sports/m-soccer/spec-rel/080904aab.html
I would expect them to take a hard look at Matt Affleck and Chris Lamb of BYU. http://www.uslsoccer.com/scripts/ru...s/Display E 47116 Player/ 22298 1076107 78244
The Fresno Fuego and Yakima Reds both have some soon to graduate Seniors who were good against the Blitzz.
I agree, on 4 counts. Having Ellinger with this will help BIG time. Since many of the best youngsters have played for him, any college players that where in any U-whatever team, Ellinger has seen. Does Utah St or Unv of Utah have any soccer standouts (not that I think for a sec they will look exclusively at Utah schools but...)?
Ismitje does remind us of a bit of MLS Trivia. The Real Highlander Rockchuck Alliance Buffalo Soldiers are the only MLS team located in a state without a men's Division I soccer team. (Illinois has one somewhere, right?) The closest is UNLV, I think. If they don't take up roster space or count towards the salary cap; I would not mind a guy from BYU's PDL team on the RHRABS. But if BYU guys were all that and a cup of Sierra Mist, I think that an MLS or A League scout would have found them before us. This will be a disadvantage for us in the years to come. If Sampson wants to see if someone will Embrace The Position, all he has to do is drive up the 405 or out the 91 or down the 5 & check out a Fullerton, UCLA, San Diego State, Loyola Marymount, Cal Poly Pomona etc game. For Ellinger, he has a 90 minute flight to scout college talent.
In surrounding states the situation is similar. No teams at Boise State, Idaho State, or Idaho; no team at Wyoming; no teams at Montana or Montana State. UN Reno has no team, so UNLV is it in Nevada. My region of Washington has one team - Gonzaga - and we can only wish to find the next Brian Ching from GU (no teams at WSU or EWU).
I organized this list of Mac Hermann hopefulls a few weeks ago for a Fire draft discussion. How does it work to draft college players who are non-Americans? Doesn't that mess up the foriegn player limits? Thanks Greddy, nice work. That list is very helpful.
Utah state and weber state currently have club men's soccer teams since I have heard that BYU is playing or have played those teams this fall. The University of Utah use to have a club soccer team, I think I would know since I played for them when they had one a couple of years ago.
No unless they're over 25 they enter as Transitional Internationals. Which means that they don't count against the 3 SI limit, but they do count against the salary cap and 18 man senior roster. There is a league wide TI limit, but teams can have as many TIs as they want as long as it doesn't pass the league limit(see Metros).
How can we not draft this guy!?!?!? He has the Infamous Double Z already in his name! We can get Boyzz Khumalo (any relation to Doctor?) in the Superdraft, then his fellow Coastal Carolinian Joseph Ngwenya in the expansion draft from LA.
i live in portland and go to the university of portland. we are known for pumping out kids to the foreign teams, eg josh simpson this last year signing a nice little contract with millwall fc. we also produced kasey keller who also signed with millwall. until he passed away last year clive charles coached the womens team. slc mls would definitely do itself some good by looking in to portland in the future as well as california. there are some great players out here.
Boyzz (pronounced boy-zee) is a great attacking midfielder. He played for the Fire reserves during the summer as they dominated the PDL. Who ever drafts him is getting an explosive player.
Matt Affleck and Chris Lamb were fun to watch at a “college” level but their play is a far cry from a professional level.
Obviously, they probably wouldn't be successful, that's not really the point. 10 goals in the PDL, for a team that finished close to .500, isn't anything to scoff at. There's 24 players on an MLS roster, probably more next year, and paying a couple of locals $10000, on the off chance that they'll develop into mediocre MLS players, isn't beyond imagination. They're part of a very small group of players who are 1. connected to Utah and 2. actually might, maybe, be able to play in the league. There's absolutely no harm in giving them as much of an opportunity as you can, on a team that's probably not going to win the MLS Cup next year anyway.
