i think for me the point is many of these young athletes are living a lifestyle that is sometimes barely within what they make -- even at 170k a week. if someone offered you a job that you love, but it pays half of what you make at the current job you hate, would you take it? could you take it? maybe your pride and your heart wants you to take it, but your mortgage, credit card payments, car loan, taxes, etc, will have something different to say. athletes can be no different, even at their exorbitant wages...
I believe Adebayor said at the beginning of last season itself that he wouldn't take the wage cut because he donates most of it to charity or something. He has been very involved with charity since his unfortunate incident with his NT.
He's aware that Man City will eventually cave in though. He's got to play competitive football for Spurs and Real Madrid while City have covered most of his wages and they'll do the same again this season. We are in the same position with Aquilani and Cole who get their full wages and both got to play regular football last season and will most likely get a pay-off if they are released this year.
The players can't let the clubs off the hook for the ridiculous they are given. It's not their fault there is no salary cap or luxury tax of any kind. It just sucks for the clubs, and the fans of said clubs, that are not owned by an oil-rich billionaire or Russian "entrepreneur".
Nobody held a gun to Citeh's head and made them give him that silly contract but why should he let them off the hook.
Fair point so essentially some players--or in this case Adebayor--spend and/or live a lifestyle that can be supported by the higher wage (in this case the 170k/week or w/e) but that would not be sustainable should he take that paycut.
I'm not one for rooting for a guy who makes more in a week than I do in a few years, but, if he doesn't get that cash, it's still rolling around in the pockets of the owners. I'll never be against seeing a player get money over an owner.
And some nice news from down the M6 http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/news/1115074/Petrov-gets-positive-news
I thought this was interesting in the sense that it made me hate the FA more, so not so much interesting as a confirmation that the FA were just really out to nail Suarez. nothing more and nothing less.
I think, the van Persie saga apart, Arsenal seems to be doing quite well-- and going about it quietly, too-- in the market and may yet surprise with a genuine title challenge this season.
^^^^ agreed - I just emailed my arsenal supporting buddy the same thing this morning. And it looks like RvP will be staying too.
They've arguably had the best summer so far. Giroud, Cazorla, and Podolski. If they get Sahin, they could really make some noise. Of course, they'll be missing Wilshere for awhile and who knows if he'll even come back. That guy just can't stay healthy.
It will continue until they find a bigger "bad boy" figure to hype and demonize. It's the basic business model for these lowlifes.
I have not read much about Suarez signing a new contract, however I was informed that one newspaper was keen to remind us "Liverpool offer a new contract to Suarez. The Suarez-Evra scandal has not stopped LFC from giving him an improved contract."
Wilshere is a bust for the moment-- they got into 3rd without him. I think what Wenger is doing is doing van Persie's goals with a committee and seem to be doing quite well at it. I think they will cause problems and may actually get the ultimate prize, myself.
As I wait for our match, I'm watching the Charity Shield, Just seen Toure absolutely leather one past Cech after a floundering clearance by Terry. Chelsea leading leading 1-0 before that and down to 10 men already but look the better side in attack, to be honest. That goal looks it's knocked the stuffing out of Chelsea. And Tevez, shadowed by a hapless David Luiz, scores a second.
