Considering they're part of a Christian Ministry like Charlotte I doubt they're really trying to be too mean...
People are funny when they first discover soccer. The idea that a team name has to be "intimidating" when you roll out the ball and blow the whistle is hilarious.
Well no Kenn. I don't think that's really necessary. We were discussion names and there were suggestions for team names that weren't very macho, so I found an example of a really un-macho team name. It was just an example that soccer teams don't need to be named after ferocious predators or warriors or some such. So Magpies, or Squirrels, or City of Trees or whatever would be fine. And I discovered soccer some time back, M'kay? - Mark
"Wow. That's not intimidating." --- Your words. That's not someone saying they don't have to be intimidating. That's someone saying they do. And you're still signing your posts, which is still stupid.
And their training pitches are all grass. MLS teams WILL NOT play a meaningless game with their first team on plastic pitch USL pitches. They will send their reserves as long as the $$$ is there.
Bring back the Sacramento Knights. It's a name that people in the area recognize as as Footie Franchise here.
So, a big press conference, a radio interview, a facebook page and a new website inviting fans to get on a mailing list and then... crickets. Thank God for bigsoccer.com
The USL Annual General Meeting begins today in Tampa Florida so it is likely most the staff (well the owners anyhow, as there likely isn't much staff at this point) are gearing up for that trip and to be honest, they probably don't have much more to pass along at this time.
This is when they work out the schedule but typically wont be released for for a couple weeks to allow teams to double check availability if they don't control their own facilities. we might here something about MLS partnership or video streaming or TV for the upcoming season. Sometime prospective owners are there but that doesn't usually get made public. The AGM also has a lot of presentations and symposiums for teams (marketing, media, operations etc.) I imagine we will see a couple press release come out but nothing ground breaking.
I don't like the name Solons. Just seems like a reference that too few people will actually understand. I wouldn't want to see Capitals. I'd prefer a name that isn't already in use in American professional sports. Real Sacramento could work, more than it does for Salt Lake City anyway. I like Rio Sacramento. Sacramento Gold is a name that dates back to the 1970s, and before they became the Gold, they were known as the Sacramento Spirits. So you have some history behind both names.
I like River City FC (or SC). It's a nickname and I like the sound. There's even a river on the city flag.
Cool, so Sacramento may have at least five players on loan from the Earthquakes at any one time, assuming the league decides that Sacramento is near enough to San Jose... http://nasn.tv/2012/mls-working-with-usl-pro-on-reserve-league-integration/ This also means that the Portland, Seattle and maybe one of the LA reserve teams will play as part of the league and there will be more west coast opponents for Sac.
Really excited to get a USL team in Sacramento. It's just too bad they won't start until the 2014 season. I would love to have the Sacramento Knights back complete with the old logo, although the rights would probably have to be bought. I like River City SC, however it is the name of a youth league here already. I was just recalling some unfortunate professional Sacramento team names from the nineties: Sacramento Surge (world football league) Sacramento Goldminers (Canadian football league) Sacramento River Rats (inline skate hockey)
That's only part true; they will be playing a number of exhibition matches in 2013 against other USL clubs and possibly MLS or other league teams, in order to market themselves (and try out players before entering the league as greenhorns) and build a fan base. So, we may be attending our first Sacramento (insert team name) game as early as Springtime. I never liked the Knights name and hope it isn't brought back. Has no meaning or association with the city or region nor its history nor even sound good with the city name. I guess you could say it associates with the Kings, but that's a stretch, as well as stupid. I'm rooting for City of Trees or River City SC. Until I hear a better one those have my votes. Sacramento Gold would be great also, if the NPSL team by the same name wouldn't mind...
You know never what will happen It might be in the works already BTW, what is the deal w/ Chivas USA coming to Elk Grove? If that happens this USL thing might get sunk. Hey QuietType the Knights did come from the original owners of the Kings. The Maloofs inherited them & that is when the Knights won the WISL in '99. The Knights of the NPSL purchased the rights of the name & used it to maintain the history of the original Knights.
