He's too canny for it to reach him, but Tom Watson has accused James Murdoch:

That remains to be seen but, in the meantime, there's this...

NoW hacking row: Tommy Sheridan trial evidence reviewed

Witness statements at the Tommy Sheridan perjury trial are to be probed following new allegations in the News of the World phone hacking scandal.

The Crown Office has asked Strathclyde Police for a "preliminary assessment" and to hand any findings to prosecutors for possible further action.

Those who gave evidence at the trial included Bob Bird, Douglas Wight and former editor Andy Coulson.

Sheridan was jailed for lying during his successful defamation case in 2006.

He was found guilty at the High Court in Glasgow in December of committing perjury during his case against the News of the World.

    ...

    Hacking enquiry

The newspaper had claimed that the socialist politician was an adulterer who had visited a swingers' club.

During the perjury trial, allegations were raised by Sheridan that his mobile phone was hacked into by private investigator Glenn Mulcaire.

He was jailed in 2007, along with the newspaper's royal editor, Clive Goodman, for intercepting voicemail messages left for members of the royal household.

Copies of Mulcaire's notebook, showing Sheridan's details, were produced during the perjury trial.

Mr Coulson, who was then Prime Minister David Cameron's director of communications, gave evidence that he had no knowledge of illegal activities, including payments to police officers.

As Sheridan was jailed for perjury it's difficult to see how Coulson can avoid the same fate if he's found guilty of the same crime. I don't know about you but, personally, I'm getting a warm, fuzzy feeling from that :)

I suspect that future pictures of Coulson will have a number appearing underneath his 'fizzog' :D

Am I right in thinking there are laws governing US citizens committing or even being aware of acts of bribery overseas in pursuance of their interests?

Er... not that I'm saying that's what's happened in this case... obviously! :)

As I predicted in my earlier post, the NOTW is dead. This Sunday will be the last ever edition.

Now that is a good news story.

Unfortunately, a few weeks down the line The Sun will produce a Sunday edition.

Now the cynic in me wonders if they've done this so that when more revelations of who they've been hacking and paying off comes out they can simply say that they've already acted.

    LOL

And it will save money as Andrew Neil just said on PM because it's cheaper to produce one paper 7 days a week than one for 6 days and another for one day.

Re: America is letting the world down

Are you watching C4 news atm mate? They just had a secretly recorded interview with Glen Mulcaire where he says that he was given instructions by members of 'a committee', (his description), to bribe policemen. One incident mentioned was the case of a woman who suffered a criminal sexual assault and details of it were given to the press within hours. She says the only way that could have happened is from a police source.

Like I said a while ago, in many ways THAT'S the real story here. We expect journalists to be scumbags but we don't expect the police to aid and abet them, particularly in ways that are openly illegal and where there's NO public interest at issue.

I see the New York Times is covering the stuff I mentioned a day or so back.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/08/world/europe/08britain.html?pagewanted=2&hp

On Wednesday, a Labour member of Parliament made another startling assertion: that while Ms. Brooks was the News of the World editor, she was confronted with evidence that the paper was using unlawful means to interrupt a murder investigation whose two main suspects had ties to the paper.

The member, Tom Watson, said that senior Scotland Yard officials met with Ms. Brooks in 2002 to alert her of evidence that members of her staff were “guilty of interference and party to using unlawful means to attempt to discredit a police officer and his wife,” so that the officer would be unable to complete a murder investigation. Mr. Watson said the police officials named a senior News of the World executive, Alex Muranchak.

On Thursday, The Guardian reported that Mr. Muranchak had apparently agreed to allow the two murder suspects in the case to use photographers and vans leased to the paper to spy on Detective Chief Superintendent David Cook, the lead detective.

The two men, private investigators named Jonathan Rees and Sid Fillery, were suspected of murdering their former partner, Daniel Morgan, who had been killed 15 years earlier. Their singling out of Mr. Cook included following him, his wife, and their children, trying to gain access to his and his wife’s voice mail and obtaining personal details about him from police databases.

Those details were found in the notes of Glenn Mulcaire, an investigator working for The News of the World whose notebooks were seized by the police and have formed the basis for much of the current criminal investigation into phone hacking.

The Guardian reported that Scotland Yard took no action against The News of the World in the case, because its head of media relations, Dick Fedorcio, had a good relationship with Ms. Brooks and wanted “to avoid unnecessary friction with The News of the World.”

Noises now about Coulson maybe being arrested as early as tomorrow :D

Recorded it - about to watch it now, but it looks like there's some real good stuff in it. Apparantly Leslie Ash impicates The Mail as well.

Coulson doesn't appear to have a leg to stand on. Phone hacking, perjury - depends if he's been paid to do the time, or will he let rip on the Murdoch empire.

Question Time tonight could be fun.

This looks bad for Cameron by association. He is close personal friends with Brooks, not to mention his links with Coulson! If he is not careful, this could damage him, if he appears to be soft on them due to his personal relationships with them.

Rio Ferdinand is lucky in that the timing of his own personal scandal is sort of being overshadowed by this greater and more serious scandal.

Cameron is in a pretty difficult position, but there's not much the Tories can do about it. If they replace him, it could potentially damage the coalition and also, given their criticisms of Brown being unelected, would open them up for return fire from Labour. Depending on how the Coulson situation pans out, and whether Cameron can be shown to have had specific knowledge of the offences when he employed him, they may not have any choice in the matter.
