RSL is up. I'm hoping they pick up J.J. Johnson.... but i don't know a whole lot about him other than he wasn't to good at the combine. But he looked pretty decent on film.
errr I mean I hope we pick John Stertzer. here is Ives take on him. JOHN STERTZER, Maryland, CM Big attacking midfielder with good feet and a striker’s finishing eye, Stertzer turned heads with his goal-scoring in 2011, and while he hasn’t scored as many in 2012 he remains a quality midfield prospect with a strong resume. He didn’t have the best College Cup performance, which could hurt his stock, but he is still highly-regarded enough to be a mid-first round selection.
Box-to-box kid in the mold of Will Johnson. This is definitely a "best player available" pick. GA player wouldn't have helped RSL's cap situation for reasons I explained last night.
so original consensus lead us to believe it would be a forward ... so does RSL have someone in mind from within the MLS already?
yes. I <3 Soccer moms gave a clue early. Look at some of the oft-injured MLS forwards and it's a pretty good bet one of them will end up with RSL.
Great, more recycled MLS garbage. One more week of this crap and I'm going to start getting real pissed off at ReAL. We better bring in something fresh and new from outside this country, no more MLS castoffs, no more overpriced junk from within. And Hassli can be a decent forward, but I don't want to see RSL paying $500k a year to a guy who's good for a couple highlight goals every season but not much else.
I sure hope there is something else up the FO's sleeves, otherwise this doesn't make a lot of sense. We've only replaced one of the forward spots that was opened up and now we've added two MFs to replace the one we've lost. Could be Stertzer might be a backup #10 or they didn't see any of the remaining top forwards as good fits with the system. Or we're now moving to a 4-5-1 formation with Findley subbing for Sabo...
Now that the 1st round is over, are there any GA players left? I'm just curious if any made it through the 1st round. Curious to see if MLS valued any of them higher than the actual teams did.
Most "experts" think it is a great pick. A "Will Johnson" type player. He'll probably play wide in the diamond.
Not saying he's not a bad player. Just feels like we've upgraded the (working) shocks after the power steering blew out.
Getting about time to add a name we've never heard of with our second pick. But since none of us had heard of Seba in round two last year, that's not necessarily a problem.
I like the Stertzer pick. Looking over the roster, we have exactly two players I trust to play that outside mid spot...Luis and Grabs. We have several others that might be able to but I haven't seen enough to be sure (enzo, viana, sebastian, grossman?). I like adding one more player to that mix to help shore it up. You need at least 4 players you are confident in for those two outside spots. Losing Andy and Will in successive years means you've lost two guys you could trust playing those spots. Need to spend picks to replace them. Further, I think the collegiate system does a good job of producing these 'types' of players. Box to Box runners that play hard. While collegiate forwards have been a tad more effective in recent years as they move to MLS, I'm far less convinced about them being able to contribute. I'd much rather they went after a forward elsewhere, and got some hard working mids in the draft...maybe another outside back to learn under Wingert and Beltran for a couple years.
"Real Salt Lake is calling a five minute time out" Odd that teams who are not on the clock can stop the clock!
RSL trading for a Philly Forward?? Edit: nope. Looks liek they traded up to grab Sandoval. I don't mind this pick. he wants to be the next Lionheart.
