Messi also won the CL, scoring 2 goals vs. Madrid and a goal in the CL final. He finished as the CL top scorer for the 3rd year in a row. Even if CR7 was slightly better than Messi in the first half of 2012, Messi has been more than slightly better than CR7 in the second half. Again, this is an individual award for the entire calendar year, not just the first half. Messi's decisive goals in the first half of the 12/13 season are just as important as they would have been if he were scoring them in the second half of the 12/13 season.
This shouldn't even be a debate anymore. Messi is clearly the better football player. If you were to ask who was the physically faster player or who has the better aerial game, it would be Ronaldo. But overall, Messi is miles ahead. Dribbling, vision, positioning, and consistency all favor Messi. Trying to deny that is like trying to block the sun with one finger. Ronaldo has very little on Messi, not in goals, not in assists, not in number of shots taken versus shots converted in goals, not in goals in against tougher opposition in the Champions' League not in pretty much anything really. The only thing Ronaldo can claim parity on is international play, and even that is evaporating and I expect should be fully exposed in 2014.
