That's correct. But if Newell's loses against Independiente and Velez wins, they go to a playoff. In my opinion, River lost this Apertura when they were beaten at home to Almagro. I can stomach the loss against San Lorenzo, but not Almagro. If River would have won that game, they'd still be in it till the end. Plus, are defense was absolutely awful until Leo finally found a group that can play with each other. Gandolfi, Nasuti, Tuzzio, and Mareque. How ironic that if Newell's do win the Apertura, two former River players will have helped them. Ortega and Gallego.

Newells will get that 1 point they need to become champs, first of all for the reason Independiente sucks balls and second cause both teams-fans are friends and I dont see Independiente ruinning it for Newells.

River lost important points at home and thats the reason why River doesnt find themselves fighting closer with the above teams.Vs SanLorenzo played like crap,vs Almagro the same, and vs Estudiantes winning most of the game gives a tieing goal with just a few minutes left and its not like before that will would loose just one point its 2 points a team loses when they tie.Like El Muñeco said before Leo found a defense pretty late but its a good thing to find it late then never and hope he can keep them together for next years tournaments especially for the Libertadores.Just hope Mascherano can stick around atleast for another year, but I doubt it.

Well the good thing about all four of the defenders that played today, is that they'll most likely stay with the club. The only one who could possibly go is Tuzzio, but didn't he resign with the club? Gandolfi, Nasuti, and Mareque should all stay. The problem that we may have is in the middle. With Mascherano and Lucho both in the eye of various Euro clubs, it looks like we would have to replace them. I still would love to see Ameli back in a River shirt. Demechelis too. Bayern might as well loan him out to us. All he's doing is freezing his ass on the bench in Germany.

Don't know if this belongs on this thread, but I was wondering what had happened to El Pelado Diaz. I'm surprised he didn't get a chance to show his abilities elsewhere as a coach ....

Its just surprising to me that he would be in a category so low .....

Re: River Plate: News & comments

Speaking of the defense, how realistic is it to find a competitive formation when you have to replace 3 starters (or was it 4) from last torneos squad ??? There has to be some time to find the right combination and have them adapt to each other .... I think this is one of the drawbacks of playing two torneos cortos ...

Diaz was a fantastically sucessful coach at River winning the Libertadores Supercopa and several Argentine league titles. With River he had players like Francescoli,Crespo,Ortega,Gallardo,Aimar,Saviola etc so I guess it will be a trial for him working with much poorer players with much poorer facilities as River are really the Madrid of South America. The language problem will also be a problem but Im sure he will bring in some good quality Argentine players.By the way in Argentina they say he is interested in buying the club is this true?

Newell's must've been 20 to 1 before the season to win it.

It doesn't look like River we'll be buying any Colombian players during the break. Although bringing back Yepes would definitely help out the defense. I don't know about others, but I wouldn't mind seeing Tressor Moreno in a River shirt. He impressed me a lot in the Copa earlier this year.

You've got to give credit where credit is due. "Tolo" Gallego and "El Burrito" played a major part in this championship for Newell's. Although they were both wearing Newell's shirts today, they will always be River first and foemost. Ortega doesn't look right wearing a Newell's shirt though. Now will see what happens next with him. If he makes his way back to River or not. I bet he'd love to play in the Copa for 2005. Newell's won't be in it unitl 2006. Will he still be around by then? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm............
