Knowing that tie advances us, I could actually see Dom trying to play more first teamers, although our playoff situation will dictate that. Sounds completely opposite to Dom's way of thinking but being a Tuesday game he has an extra day to rest compared to most Wed-Sat game splits.
Our playoff situation will entirely dictate who we play v. Olimipia. I think it is likely that we use a decent amount of second stringers to start the match and have some of the big guns on the bench. i know some of yous that are new to CONCACAF. this is a good read concerning an all too frequent problem in Central American countries where the local football should be at a much higher level than it currently is: https://www.bigsoccer.com/soccer/usafan12/2012/10/10/in-praise-of-perseverance/
That is a nice read. Your many Calixte clearly follows CONCACAF soccer closely and is a great source of news on the game around our region. However, he constant makes analytical conclusions that are not very smart. This time, he says Herediano has an advantage going into Rio Tinto due to their home 1-0 result against RSL. History tells us that first leg home teams that win by only one goal are more likely than not going to lose the tie. The best that can be said is that Herediano has given themselves a fighting chance.
Matchday 6 schedule: Tuesday, October 23 Houston Dynamo (USA) v. Olimpia (HON) 7:00 pm FSC Real Salt Lake (USA) v. Herediano (CRC) 9:00 pm FSC Chorillo (PAN) v. Alajuelense (CRC) 9:00 pm Thursday, October 25 Guadalajara (MEX) v. Xelaju (GUA) 9:00 pm Metapan (SLV) v. Los Angeles Galaxy (USA) 9:00 pm FSC Not sure on the rest of the TV coverage. TFC advances with a 3-0 win, a 4-2 win, or better. Anything else and Santo advances. RSL advances with a 1-0 win or any 2 goal win. Anything else and Herediano advances. HOU advances with any win or tie. Olimpia advances with a win. UANL advances with a win. Alajuelense advances with a win or tie. Guadalajara advances with a 1-0 win or any 2 goal win. Anything else and Xelaju advances.
A draw is good but getting the full 3 points will be better if it goes down to having a higher seeding and hosting the 2nd leg of the CCL knockout stages. I believe the 1v8 and 4v5 bracket will host the 2nd leg in the CCL Final. I think the goal for the Dynamo is to get that #4 seed.
Does that mean that any win above three goals by Chivas advances Xelaju since anything else that isn't 1-0 or 2 goal win advances Chivas?
I think it is 2+ goal win. I think I've got a beer bet with someone on here that Chivas will advance. Who was that?
https://www.bigsoccer.com/soccer/bill-archer/2012/10/19/just-say-no-to-serbia/ I dunno which is worse: Paul's blog about the economic problems of our fellow C'CAF brothers or Bill's about the racism problems in UEFA. Both give lots to think about though.
Huh. You know, it's funny that these things become such a big deal but the soccer fandom never seems that worked up about countries that operate under Sharia law and all of the "rights" violations that occur under that.
Remember this list to guide your rooting this week. We want a Dynamo win and: RSL over Herediano, RSL can win the group but will only have 9 pts. Chorillo over Monterrey, Monterrey has already won the group but a loss would keep them at 9 pts. TFC over Santos, pretty much the same as Monterrey Marathon over Seattle, ditto Tigres-Alajuelense, doesn't really matter much, we just don't want a huge Alajuelense win Guadalajara-Xelaju, same as Tigres-Ala, no big win for Xelaju Metapan over LA, same as the Monterrey, Santos, and TFC games
If all that falls in place, a one seed would be spectacular. Otherwise, I'm going to be selfish as hell and cheer for my Spring Break/ bucket list destinations (Costa Rica and Seattle, respectively).
So to avoid against a Mexican club, we need the Galaxy to lose, Chivas to win, and LDA-Tigres draw. It looks like the Dynamo may play either Herediano or Seattle.
I'd be more than ok with Seattle, but I have a feeling we'll get Santos or Monterrey, which would still be exciting but would obviously hinder our chances of advancing.

Updated Quarterfinal standings after games of 10/23: 1. Monterrey 12pts (+15gd) 2. Herediano 10pts (+3gd) 3. Santos 9pts (+11gd) 4. Seattle 9pts (+5gd) 5. Houston 8pts (+6gd) 6. Los Angeles 7pts (+7gd) 7. Xelaju 7pts (+2gd, 6 gf) 8. Alajuelense 7pts (+2gd, 4gf) Teams in red still have games to play.
Yeah, I was sort of looking at that but there are a lot of variables. If all the home teams win 1-0 then we finish in the #5 spot and play #4 Herediano. But if LA wins or Tigres wins big then we fall to #6 and play #3 Seattle. If both those things happen, then we fall to #7 and play Santos. Unless Santos wins big. Then we would play Monterrey. If Alajuelense upsets Tigres then they could jump in to the top 4 and be a potential opponent. Same thing for Xelaju over Guadalajara. And that's not even considering ties. We can play almost anyone.
Thats what I thought. BUT, how can we move to 4? There are four teams with more points now. It looks like we can be anywhere from 5th to 8th.
