Does anyone know the rules regarding redshirting at a D1 program. Does the coach have to apply to the NCAA for a redshirt year for a player? At what point in the season does this need to be completed? Are there differenced between a medical redshirt vs just redshirting to save a year of eligibility? Any practice requirements ie not participating with the team etc.. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks
Checkout the following link to the NCAA manual: http://www.ncaa.org/library/membership/division_i_manual/2007-08/2007-08_d1_manual.pdf I believe at least part of the answer to your question is in Article 14 Eligibility: Academic and General Requirements. See paragraph 14.2.4 Hardship Waiver (page 137). Irod
There's no application, and you can participate with the team; you just can't play in games. It's simply a matter of whether or not you play in more than 10% of the games in a season (2 for soccer, IIRC), limited to the 1st half of the season. If there is a medical or personal hardship that causes a loss of eligibility, the school can petition te NCAA to have it restored.
