RSL to get a USL affiliate in San Diego? http://soccer.si.com/2013/12/18/mls-usl-pro-tulsa-nielsen-kansas-city-sacramento-oklahoma/
Interesting. This wouldn't allow the teams to practice together, but it makes sense in the fact that Hansen has a house there and would be able to visit the team often. My only question would be the thought of expanding to Southern California. I wonder who holds the rights to San Diego. I saw a map a while back that showed each team's area of reach for their academy, but I don't remember if LA or CUSA reached that far south.
I would think that basing the club out of Utah would be more appropriate and better. Maybe even more cost effective? Base it out of Ogden or Provo... Or my personal favorite St George. But not my money so if it's San Diego, cool... Road Trip
outside of UT/AZ seems to make the most sense to me. RSL has good coverage in those 2 markets and so moving to other areas will expand their reach which is hopefully a good thing.
Think of it this way - RSL already has recruiting coverage in AZ, an academy in AZ and a pseudo-relationship with FC Tucson (at least doing their pre-season tournament). What's to be gained from an AZ USL team? However, if you get a USL team in SoCal - you now get better visibility and experience with SoCal fans. This allows you to potentially garner fans that might affiliated with the Galaxy, gain better media visibility for the team, a good place for year round practice and other events and - perhaps more importantly - visibility with the SoCal young soccer fans. While they can't recruit much directly from the region, it would increase their odds of using their out-of-region exceptions for top-flight talent.
I would think if it's in the state, the only logical choices are the SLC area or maybe Ogden area. St. George just wouldn't have the potential fan base. I do agree that if you're not in those two areas, SoCal is a good area to pull from.
You know it will be Real San Diego. That name is just begging to be used. Only other better town would be New Madrid MO. Real New Madrid
I imagine new assistant coach Andy Williams would dig a team in SD. He's probably putting on his Bob Marley gloves & hat and asking DH permission to scout the city RIGHT NOW.
I think you'd be surprised. There's a ton of youth soccer here and the only competition for entertainment dollars is Dixie State and the local high schools. I think you could also reach into Cedar City and also Southern Nevada as well. Wash Co. has a population of 100,000 that's growing by the day. Just my $0.02 I'm not biased at all in living in St George.
Not trying to bash St. George, but just going by populations, and ability to pull viewers, St. George has to be near the bottom of potential UT locations. It's not a bad area, it just doesn't really have much nearby to really pull from. Plus ideally you'd do it in SLC so they could be near RSL and train with them at times.
If you are going to St. George, why not go an hour farther south and place the team in Vegas? I know the Vegas Mobsters should be starting play next year, so why not just affiliate with them somehow? Seems like the best way to expand the brand into a larger market.
Throw them on a plane, they can be to SLC from LA/SD faster than a drive from St George or Vegas, for cheaper.
I live in St George. I just want a team because the rest of the state forgets about us unless it's Fall Break or Spring Break. Already all over the Mobsters. Been in contact with the AO Vegas and the supporter group down there, Battle Born SC. Don't worry about that.
50 degree weather and no haze here and this is the cold part of the year. How's SLC right now? Can train/play year round down here and it's an hour plane ride up to SLC. Not the worst place to put a team by any stretch of the imagination. And doesn't everyone from No. Utah like a road trip to St George? I did... until I moved here. #USLPRO4STG #NASL4STG #USLPDL4STG #NPSL4STG #SOCCER4STG
Until you start making some mock Real St George crests, we don't want to hear another word out of you, Mr. Bias.
