    Week 26 Results:

    Real Oviedo .. .. 2-0 ...... Lealtad…….….
    Cudillero….. .. 0-2 .... Langreo………
    Universidad.. .. 2-1 .... Siero……………
    Tuilla………… .. 1-1 .... Astur…………..
    Caudal………. .. 3-0 .... Union Ceares.
    Hispano……… .. 0-1 .... Navarro………
    Ribadesella.. .. 0-0 .... Real Aviles….
    Candas………. .. 3-1 .... Llanes…………
    Sporting B…. .. 4-3 .... Colloto……….
    Real Tapia…. .. 4-2 .... Condal………..

Big result for Oviedo moves them 6 points clear. The 3rd v 4th match saw Langreo win and dump Cudillero out of the Play-off zone for the first time this season. Universidad beat Oviedos' conquerors of last week Siero and Caudal won against lowly Condal to cement their Play-off credentials. Tuilla at one stage a possible contender for 2nd spot dropped further out of the Play-off picture with a home draw. Llanes lost away to lame ducks Hispano to all but end any hopes of Play-offs and Sporting B struggled to a win against bottom side Collotto.

    Table:

    1st Real Oviedo.. 26 . 18 . 3 . 5 . 59 . 21 . 57 (no change)
    2nd Lealtad….….. 26 . 14 . 9 . 3 . 36 . 20 . 51 (no change)
    3rd Langreo……… 26 . 14 . 5 . 7 . 42 . 26 . 47 (up 1 place)
    4th Universidad…. 26 . 13 . 8 . 5 . 44 . 30 . 47 (up 1 place)
    --------------PLAY-OFFS--------------- --------------PLAY-OFFS---------------
    5th Cudillero……... 26 . 12 . 10 . 4 . 34 . 26 . 46 (down 2 places)
    6th Tuilla………….. 26 . 12 . 8 . 6 . 35 . 29 . 44 (no change)
    7th Caudal………… 26 . 12 . 7 . 7 . 47 . 32 . 43 (no change)
    8th Llanes………… 26 .. 9 . 11 . 6 . 35 . 25 . 38 (no change)
    9th Sporting "B"... 26 . 10 . 6 . 10 . 43 . 38 . 36 (no change)

Langreo hitting form at right time coming from almost nowhere in the shadow of Lealtad to storm upto 3rd. Caudal have to sort out their terrible away form to have any chance of grabbing a Play-off spot with Ceares, Hispano and Collotto next 3 aways could well actually win one or two.

My tips for 3 Play-off spots Lealtad,Universidad and Caudal but for Langreos' late serge (7 straight wins) looking good.

Who do Langreo face next? the ender of record runs, Real Oviedo!

Similar to this week top 4 play each other. Those teams outside Play-offs obviously have a chance to make up ground on atleast 2 teams then.

A win for Oviedo could see a big unsurmountable gap opening up.
A defeat though always seems to follow a good result, as soon as you think the corner might be turning they have a nightmare. Maybe Oviedo like those around them are due a run of their own, after winning 6 on trot at start of the season results have been patchy, it is time to show form that will storm the Play-offs.

    Suspensions:

Both Aulestia and Falo were booked against Lealtad and reached 5 yellow cards so are suspended for the Langreo match. Both key men and will be missed.

Ivan will therefore get his second start of the season in goal, a good young keeper who deserves his chance.
With Falo missing from midfield Jon Carrera would be logical replacement if fit, especially if Carrasco wants to stick with the formation that worked so well last match. Obviously then the tinkerman will probably shift Jose Luis into Falos' holding midfield role and move 3 or 4 other players out of position to accommodate the missing player, why do anything the easy way?

    Oviedo Team news:

    Suspended: Aulestia (GK), Falo (CM).
Injured: Carmona (CB), Jon Carrera (CM), Juan Luis (CM), Pacheta (CF), Meijide (CB).

Matias has been talked up all week as someone giving 100% in training and impressing Carrasco, whether this means he’ll be in the first team or miss out on the match squad all together is anyones guess. With Cervero most probably up front on his own and with Armando, Bruno and Stefan in squad can’t see why another striker is needed, he should be farmed out as earlier intended to Oviedo “B”. With Falo suspended and Jon Carrera injured that leaves a space in midfield. Who can play the holding role? if José Luis wasn’t needed at right back he would be the obvious answer, he has to play at right back. The main option then would be for Jaime or Centron to play in middle with the other playing on the left. Or rather than play 4-5-1 play a 4-4-2 formation and drop the holding midfield role of Falo and go on the offensive with an extra-striker. We have a wealth of strikers why not be a little adventurous and play 2.

I’d play 4-4-2: (playing to the squads strengths)

GK Ivan; RB José Luis, LB Lasarte, CB Bravo, CB Lucas Iglesias; RM Sergio Villanueva, LM Centron, CM Mario Preito, CM Curro; CF Cervero, CF Armando.

Carrasco would probably pick Stefan or Bruno ahead of Armando in a more withdrawn role but I think Cervero needs real support as his goals have completely dried up. I think also that last week showed that if Mario Prieto and Curro are given the licence to go forward they excell, defensively they may falter against top sides so to get best out of them have a "pivot" mopping up behind them (a job for Falo, Juan Luis or Meijide when available) the problem Carrasco has is that no one is available.

A win would settle any thoughts of not finishing top, the 6 point gap would be held onto or extended in coming weeks and the championship would be in the bag.
A defeat and all the hard work and great performance of last week will be forgotten and this side will have to rebuild again.

Carrasco is still experimenting, not helped by suspensions and injuries, but we need to get a settled side sooner rather than later. Hopefully Meijide and Pacheta have speedy recoveries.

    Langreo 0-1 Real Oviedo

A great result which is all that really mattered on Sunday. A poor performance overall against a gritty defensive Langreo team, who set out to stifle from the start.

Carrasco had two enforced changes with Ivan replacing suspended Aulestia in goal, on the bench came youth team goalkeeper Javi. With Falo missing through suspension too Lobo decided to field Stefan alongside Curro and Mario Preito in midfield, Curro playing the less familiar holding role. The only plus points of the game were the performances of Ivan who again showed his potential and the two attacking midfielders Mario Preito and Stefan. Langreo were very poor and dragged the visitors down to their level. Mario Preito is proving to be a great signing with another goal and another man of the match performance.

Last minute of the match a punch up in the Oviedo goal mouth resulted in Ivan being sent-off. Javi had a few minutes of first team action and will now have an extended run on the subs bench.

Oviedo are now 9 points clear at the top with 11 matches to play.

some great results with 2nd and 3rd losing, Universidad jumping upto 3rd with a win at Lealtad. 19 games unbeaten and then Lealtad lose 2 in a row - shame! 5th placed Cudillero lost too and the other play-off contenders Tuilla Caudal and Llanes both drew. so only one team other than Oviedo in the top 8 actually won.

2 wins and the season is back on track, who ever doubted that Carrasco would come good???

Oviedo should win, but Lealtad face on form Ribadesella away, is it too much to ask for a 3rd defeat in a row? 3rd play 4th so someones going to lose ground there. 5th through to 8th should all win to spice up the fight for Play-off places.

Oviedo have actually plodded along quite consistantly.

The three below (2nd-4th) have picked up a decent points total but overall have risen up the table because those previously in Play-off positions have been so awfull.
Langreo actually rose from 10th to 3rd in 9 weeks before this Sundays defeat to Oviedo.
Cudillero Tuilla and Caudal especially have failed dramatically when the pressure has hit at the business end of the season.
Cudillero have just one win in last 9 matches.
Tuilla 7 matches without a win.
Caudal just can't string 2 results together due to very poor away form.
teams like Aviles and Llanes had the opportunity also to push up the table, Aviles dropped from 6th to 12th picking up just 7 points and only 1 win in 10 matches.
Sporting B had only accumulated 7 points from 10 matches before winning their last 2 matches to climb back upto 9th place.

Hi... nice thread, by the way.

I was curious about the kind of attendances the various teams get in this group of the Tercera. Can you shed any light on that, if you have time? If you don't have data for them all, what about just the biggest and smallest? I imagine Oviedo are the highest - are Universidad among the lowest?

    Cheers.

Oviedo are by far the largest side in Tercera, and that includes all 17 groups.
I believe they have more season ticket holders (socios) than any side outside top 2 divisions. There are a couple of sides in Primera with less socios.

Attendances aren't widely reported in Spain and if they are they are usually guessed etimates, for example away to Langreo last week 3000 attendance.
Every club in division without exception has their highest attendance when Oviedo are the visitors. Caudal last seasons champions are probably next best supported team and they average around 2000, when Oviedo visited that figure almost doubled. Last time Oviedo played away at Caudal there were nearly 6000 fans 4500 Oviedo this year 3500 with around 1500 visitors. Attendences have fallen quite dramatically. That first Oviedo game was only the second time Caudal had ever got over 5000 to a game in their history.

Last home match against Lealtad saw a crowd of 5,967 which was pretty disappointing for a top of the table clash. Crowds since christmas have averaged around the 5,500-6000 mark. They haven't hit 10,000 this season which is about what they averaged last year in segunda "B" In their last season they were in Tercera playing same sides they averaged around 11,000.

Oviedo have a 30,000 all seater stadium so you can imagine it feels a little empty at times, atleast you can always get served in one of the many bars and catering outlets.

Thanks a lot, very useful info - I guessed that Oviedo would be by far the biggest in their group, I hadn't looked at all the teams in the other groups yet ;) I suppose hardly any other team that's been in the Primera in living memory is this far down the pyramid (although there are a few, like Rayo Vallecano, in Segunda B.)

Do Universidad get many fans, any idea?

Very good result with a few other key results going Oviedos' way, an excellent weekend. (my team in England have won 7 in a row now to go top of their division).Cervero back on form with a fine performance upfront on his own most of the match. Oviedo did just enough to win without getting out of first gear against the form team of the division a side who had won 6 in a row.
Teamwise this looks like Carrascos set formation, whether that stays the same when Pacheta comes back in is anyones guess, perhaps the striker will be asked to play on the right wing? Bravo and Mario Preito (the other January signings) have come in and proved to be excellent signings. With the return of Meijide (2-3 weeks) the defence looks very solid for the Play-offs (fingers crossed no more injuries) another clean sheet and Aulestia could be on for the "Zamora" title after all.

With the return of Meijide (2-3 weeks) the defence looks very solid for the Play-offs (fingers crossed no more injuries) another clean sheet and Aulestia could be on for the "Zamora" title after all.

    Week 28 Results:

    Real Oviedo 2 - 0 Navarro
    Ribadesella 3 - 0 Lealtad
    Universidad 1 - 0 Langreo
    Cudillero…. 2 - 0 Astur
    Tuilla…….… 1 - 0 Condal
    Caudal……. 2 - 0 Candas
    Real Tapia.. 0 - 1 Llanes
    Sporting B.. 3 - 0 Siero
    Hispano…… 1 – 3 Union Ceares
    Aviles Ind 2 - 0 Colloto

So Oviedo win 3rd in a row to open up a 10 point lead at top.
Lealtad lost their 3rd on the trot (now 5 matches without a win) to drop from 2nd to 3rd, after 19 matches unbeaten they were due a few defeats.
Universidad go second with 6 win in a row (12 unbeaten) Cudillero and Tuilla both won to leap frog Langreo (2 defeats in a week) while Caudal won at home to keep the pressure on for Play-off places.
Oviedo have atleast confirmed their place in the Play-offs!!!!

    Remaining fixtures:

    29 ( a ) ASTUR ( 15th )

    30 ( h ) LLANES ( 8th )

    31 ( a ) CONDAL ( 17th )

    32 ( h ) CEARES ( 12th )

    33 ( a ) CANDAS ( 16th )

    34 ( h ) CAUDAL ( 7th )

    35 ( a ) HISPANO ( 19th )

    36 ( h ) TUILLA ( 5th )

    37 ( a ) REAL TAPIA ( 18th )

    38 ( h ) CUDILLERO ( 4th )

With only 4 fixtures against sides in the top 10 i would expect 6 wins at the very least, as the 4 "tough" fixtures are all at home 10 wins from 10 wouldn't be a too fancyfull prediction.

Mathematically 20 points from 10 remaining points games would give Oviedo the title, with 63 points from 28 games so far they should do that easily.

Next match: (a) Astur, Sunday 16th March.

    Astur Club de Fútbol

    History:
After a brief spell when they tried to usurp Real Oviedo by trying to steal their identity Astur have faided back into the shadows. Changed their strip back to their previous colours and resigned to the fact that they never going to be the best team in Asturias. They know their place now, a win on Sunday and hopefully we’ll never have to face them ever again.

Astur currently lie 15th with 32 points from 28 games, 12 points clear of relegation probably means they are safe from going down this year. Lucky for them there are 4 teams ever worse than they are. Their next 8 fixtures I could see them losing all of them, they are very very lucky that they’ve got a sufficient points cushion.

    Home form:
On the face of it very impressive home form with 5 wins from 5 home games (Colloto 1-0, Condal 2-0, Candas 3-2, Hispano 2-1, Tapia 1-0) obviously all those sides are in the bottom 5, which has helped lift Astur clear of the relegation zone. In their other 9 home matches just 1 win, and against half decent sides they’ll be lucky to add another win between now and the rest of the season.

    Home record: 14th position 14matches 6wins 2draws 6defeats goals for23 against25 20pts

    Goalscorers:
    4 Saúl González
    4 Carreño
    3 Valito
    3 Hugo
    3 Jaime

Last meeting: (h) 7-0 (Cervero 2, Centron, Curro 3, Armando)

    Real Oviedo 3-4-3
GK Aulestia; RB Lucas, CB Meijide, LB Lasarte; RM José Luís, CM Falo, CM Curro, LM Jaime; LF Centrón, CF Diego Cervero, RF Sergio Villanueva.
    Substitutes:
Armando Quesada (Jaime) 53m, Bruno (Centron) 60m, Stefan (Sergio Villanueva) 60m.

Astur were awfull and could and should have lost by more.

    Oviedo team news:

Everyone starting to get back to fitness with the likes of Stefan Matias and Centron all fully fit. Jon Carrera and Pacheta could return but Meijide a long way off from returning.

With problems in defence (lack of numbers) perhaps a return to the Formation that brought a 7-0 win? How about this starting XI?

    Aulestia

    Lucas…….Bravo………Lasarte

    Centrón.…Mario Preito.....……Curro....Sergio Villanueva

    Fixtures Match 29:

    (15th) Astur….. - Real Oviedo (1st)
    (13th) Navarro. - Universidad (2nd)
    (3rd) Lealtad…. - Sporting B (9th)
    (12th) Ceares - Tuilla (5th)
    (8th) Llanes…… - Cudillero (4th)
    (6th) Langreo - Ribadesella (10th)
    (20th) Colloto - Caudal (7th)
    (14th) Siero.,…. - Aviles (11th)
    (16th) Candas.. - Hispano (19th)
    (17th) Condal - Real Tapia (18th)

It's pretty much last chance for sides such as Sporting B and Llanes to get into Play-offs, in contrast defeats for Cudillero Langreo and Lealtad could see the sides who at times looked like they would be certain of play-off places, could actually be worried about missing out on the Play-offs all together. Universidad and Oviedo shouldn't have any problems winning away, they could easily be the top 2 come May. Caudal and Tuilla should win so the last 2 Play-off places could get really bunched up.

Pacheta took part in full training session today and is expected to be available for selection on Sunday. It'll be interesting if he starts and what formation is played against a team that should be easy pickings.

Clean sheet record on verge of being broken again this season. Oviedo goalkeeper Aulestia is now favorite for the "Zamora" title.
The record of not conceeding a goal is 340 minutes (25m Llanes-Oviedo, 90m at Condal, Ceares y Candás, and 45m at Caudal).
Presently 305 minutes (35m at Siero and 90m at Lealtad, Langreo and Navarro).
The current record all the better as Diego Meijide has missed the last 3 matches.

    Match Squad - (a) v Astur

    Goalkeepers:
    Aulestia
    Iván

    Defenders:
    José Luis
    Lucas Iglesias
    Bravo
    Diego Meijide
    Iker Lasarte

    Midfielders:
    Mario Prieto
    Sergio Villanueva
    Roberto Santos
    Curro
    Falo
    Miguel Centrón
    Jaime

    Strikers:
    Armando Quesada
    Stefan
    Diego Cervero

Suprises in match squad as no place for Pacheta but Diego Meijide returns. Pacheta trained all week while other long term injured players (Jon Carrera, Carmona and Meijide) all returned to light training at the end of the week and were expected to be atleast a week away from being fit to play. Perhaps the standard of opposition dictates that we shouldn't risk Pacheta, but it seems strange other forwards Matias and Bruno didn't made the squad either. Scarcity of numbers in defence probably necessitates Meijide on the bench, perhaps a run out as sub towards the end will help the recuperation process.

    -----

    Saturday result: Navarro 1-1 Universidad

2nd placed Universidad draw meaning an Oviedo victory would send them 12 points clear at the top of the division.

Ivan is the big suprise replacing Aulestia in goal after serving a one match ban, otherwise team pretty much as expected. Falo can feel a little hard done by that he doesn't start but the other 2 central midfielders have been in phenomenal form recently.
